It looked like a good trail had been beaten down to it that I'm surprised it hasn't been made into part of a walking trail. I'd love to come across an old tunnel like that on a walk!
i think the recesses are a part of strengthening and of course reduces the need for more bricks assuming the walls are as thick as the wider sections between the arches .
I went there years ago looking for filming locations for The Prisoner. We never found it of course as the actual tunnel used is now under the Mayfield by-pass a little to the south. Prisoner nerdy trivia: if you look carefully at the scene where the truck emerges from the tunnel you can clearly see one of the film crews on the embankment.
ORLA S a lot of the towns served by the Cuckoo line are now far bigger than in Beeching’s day, it’s hard to see how a town the size is that Hailsham is now doesn’t have a station.
this si what I would be doing if I lived in the UK, I want to do the Cuckoo walk when we eventually get back to the UK yes mushroom or wine great places wow
GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (verse1) Doc Beeching rode an empty train Uncovered neat wallpapered cracks Smoked a pipe engaged the brain Returned with gleaming sharpened axe Beady eye scanned busy good yard Physics thesis paper waved Footplate sweat & toil marked card Live branches cut, main trunk saved... Hi Richard, watching some of your abandoned tunnel videos and was wondering who actually owns these tunnels and are any of them for sale? Would any of them get permission to be renovated? Many thanks
Richard I found a interesting video on here in which a train journey from Tonbridge to Polegate is filmed and it the narrator comments on how even though the line was single gauge and bridges and tunnels had to be built to dual gauge, don’t quite know why, would be interesting to see you visit Polegate and the site of the Cuckoo line junction
I love a good tunnel - it’s a shame it hasn’t been repurposed as part of the Cuckoo trail; I assume the land owner wouldn’t let that happen? (It’s been done before - much of the old railway between Plympton and Tiverton (the GWR line) is a bridle way and there’s a tunnel (with lights) that you can cycle through! I’ll await the party invite!
These disused railway vidio's are my favourite after watching your cinder hill tunle one and the Tunbridge Wells west one I have visited both this will probably be the next one I have to visit
George Timperley you might like to take a look at this channel link which has some fantastic videos about the old railway lines in Shropshire. th-cam.com/users/holdenwebs

Another great video
Thanks Ann
Thank you great film yet again
We do like a good tunnel! Thanks for watching.
What fun!
Got to love tunnels
I would suggest that the recesses are more for strengthening than anything to bolster the walls for when the top-fill was put back in above.
Love watching you two in your videos,i am going to call you the "Tunnel Trekkers",
Hahaha - that's us!

Oh right - that makes sense. Thanks Shawn.
I seem to remember hearing it was standard at the time to build the bridges and tunnels dual gauge even though it only carried single track
Oh right - that is interesting. I often ask the question is it double or single guage.

Ho ho ho - The Prisoner!
Beeching has a lot to answer for !
👍
He sure has.

Wrong !! He was actually used as purely a puppet …it was not his personal view . Look it up !!!
Obviously not locals as you would know that sign on the ground said five ashes.
😊😊😊❤

Golly that is a question - I don't know! :)
Richard Vobes no worries! Keep up the content
I believe the Cuckoo line was single gauge

Surely there must be someone out there who can explain why so many arches were added under that tunnel.
Hopefully!
Richard and Dumpman is there any chance of exploring the old Wealden line?
Oooh sounds exciting - will have to put to Mr Dumpman and see what he says.
You can always rely on Dumpman.. i like him..

I believe the Cuckoo trail only extends as far north as Heathfield, Argos Hill is further north
