It's a big misconception that the iPhones are waterproof. They are not! They are just IP68 water-resistant. Apple highly discourages taking the iPhone to the pool. Although they can survive few spills and all but when exposed to too much water they can be damaged.
Fun fact. go-pro cams are not even rated ip67/68 but people take them literally everywhere
