This is my first performance of classical Japanese dance. This number is named Matsu no Midori, The Green of a Pine. Watch this and give your comments, though I am a poor dancer. lol

as a beginner to do Matsu No Midori is very impressive. It is not a easy dance to do and you have done it quite well though you need lots of improvement in your styling and need to relax a little bit to make more graceful. For a beginner, I would say "WELL DONE". 頑張ってね。

The angles are precise and the motions are smooth and clean. I don't know much about traditional court dances, but I do recognize good skills. Very nicely done.

    Hey,
I'm a Boylesque dancer, I'm working on a routine for a competition that will hopefully at least take me to the national Australian finals.
The routine is designed to have a kabuki look to it, but with graceful classical Japanese inspired movements, you're performance was very inspirational and educational at the same time. If you're a beginner i'm very impressed, I'm no expert on Japanese dance, but this is by far one of the best videos I have come across during my research :)

I thought you did wonderfully! You were able to keep your body very still, and very straight while dancing. That's very impressive.

    Thank you for your comment.
Exactly! To perform on a stage, it costs too much money for people in middle class like me. Fortunately, this was my first stage and one of my relatives who also teaches Japanese classical dance paid for me.

Very nice. I'm actually in the process of learning this dance myself for my natori. I've been taking lessons for 14 years, and I hope that I'm ready for the test!
Just as a question, which kai are you from? I noticed that there were come differences between what I have been learning and what you performed. I think this might be because we are from different schools.
    Once again, very well done!

I think the dancer is a boy or a young man.

I am a male and played a male role, though there is a female version of this dance, Matsu no Midori.

Geiko are are traditional, female Japanese entertainers, whose skills include performing various Japanese arts, such as classical music and dance. Contrary to popular opinion and Western stereotypes, geisha are not prostitutes.
so, this is not geiko dance because the dancer is not geiko. right?

That looked pretty darn awesome, dude! Where can I learn this style of dance? I have to choreograph a traditional Japanese dance for a saxophone recital, and I'm classically trained in ballet, and have taken jazz, modern, and hip-hop, but traditional japanese dance alludes me! Argh! I want to mix both cultures - classical dance with japanese dance - and I need some tips on classical japanese dancing. If anybody could write me, and tell me the basics, that would be freakin' awesome!
