I love this dance, it has a special meaning to me. I'm especially fond of anything to do with the pleasure quarters of old Japan. The art and culture that resulted from them fascinates me.
He is a male KABUKI actor,Bando Tamasaburo who is known as a living national tresure in Japan. When I saw him at the theatre,I was shocked by the beauty of his silhouette and movement.I am so grateful to live in the same era with this living exquisite art.
i am fascinated by bando tamasaburo's wigs and costumes. he always come on stage looking so feminine and elegant. i have to get myself some lovely kimonos like that.
Taken from Wikipedia: Woman kabuki actors are rare though there was onnakabuki. The onnakabuki is woman’s kabuki. But women performing kabuki was believed to corrupt public morals. The shogunate prohibited the woman from performing in 1629. And kabuki actors became only the men in 1652. Now the men play both male and a female roles.
It's interesting that women were banned from the English stage at the same time, and for the same reason--hence the all-male casts of Shakespeare's plays during his lifetime
His movements are so elegant and the angles and balance he achieves with minute movement and placement of his body and fan are beautiful. If I could choose an expressive dance of love, it would be this one.
Also, the song is taking part in the pleasure district. The reason why the obi is in the front is because, when a customer came it was easier to undo and redo the obi if it was tied in front.
i do admire how he talks..and the explanation of the movement..like in inabune..how she elegantly turns her head in concern..for she fears that even the grinding of her ink stick would wake the house up..
Every moment means something. So dance expert watch closely. A twitch of a finger might suggest a soft breeze or a flick of his eyes would mean suspicion or jealousy
I'm sorry you think so. For Shochiku to have paid me for subtitles would have cost them more, and believe me, what they paid for narration was a pittance. And please understand that I translated and narrated everything on my own. I also have over a quarter century's experience. The one thing, of course, that I have learnt from all of that time is that you can never please everyone. - I should add, for these Tamasaburo Buyo-shu DVDs, Tamasaburo himself checked and approved all the English.
@ArisolSpray its been also said that it is represent a married woman "as this was the style of married women to wear" if you see woodblock print, the obi is rarely removed. so the obi means, she is his wife for the night. Liza Dalby had this written somewhere.
His movements are so delicately precise, I can see why this man is such a celebrated onnagata. When was this filmed? Tamasaburo must be over fifty by now.
Hey, it's not my fault that they included the English. If you think you know everything, or if you think it's not worth knowing... why don't you buy the DVD yourself? I'm sure you don't need to know anything at all about a foreing culture and the intricate details. You just wanna feel something, right? And you're intelectual ability is numbered in the low 50s, right?
@diamantisa there are some places in japan that don't but there too are some who tie it at the front for easy access especially if no one could assist you as you dress up. :)
even if you did you probably wouldn't understand the lyrics cause it is really hard for native speakers to understand that. It is spoken in a weird way.
@xxzerawriotxx First off I wasn't talking to you I was talking to mister "Have sex with Kabuki GIRL". Second I have no problem with the way that Kabuki is performed, it IS an art style after all, and a very unique one at that. So please, don't jump down my throat without looking at the whole post...
@mikeeG77 from the way i read it i think that is a little insensitive but i couldnt blame you. oh and if some smart japanese mentor comes by and reads your comment he would most likely say that you trapped yourself through your own words.
If you see Kabuki dance performed by Tamasaburou please search "Sagi musume Tamasaburo" or "Musume Dojoji Tamasaburo",and he is acting in Kabuki please search "Akoya Tamasaburo". Two dances are especially famous for Japanese dance. Although it is about Akoya, there are only Tamasaburo who can play Akoya among the current Kabuki actors. It is very difficult to play three kinds of instruments in an important scene of the story, acting is also a play where hardness is demanded.

he certainly does not move like he's in his 60s. so graceful.

He's so beautiful. His performance chills me. This is a true art form, and I am grateful it has survived so long.
The feeling of longing is so palpable in his every gesture. Genius performer.
i do admire how he talks..and the explanation of the movement..like in inabune..how she elegantly turns her head in concern..for she fears that even the grinding of her ink stick would wake the house up..
i never could have thought that putting up a mosquito net and going inside it could be interpreted so beautifully 😂
Every movement is like a beautiful painting! Lovely.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER KIMONO ITS SO BEAUTIFUL !
and i love traditional japanese dance and song its just amazing
Extremely beautiful. I had to cry.
Paul! Excellent commentary! I enjoy watching the show along with your explanation! Thank you so much!
Every moment means something. So dance expert watch closely. A twitch of a finger might suggest a soft breeze or a flick of his eyes would mean suspicion or jealousy
I dress in drag and calmly fan the air so ever gracefully. Love it
It's like a picture of Ukiyoe is moving...
It is actually a male. In kabuki theatre, all parts are played by males, even female roles, as seen here.
Very nice story line. The dancer's moves were very precise.
A woman's life is love and tears------regardless of time and epoch.
that kimono is beautiful i absolutely love it
he's so pretty. he looks exactly like he fell out of an old Japanese paint.
Such beautifully slow controlled movement !
Beautiful. This takes great discipline.
I am dancer & for me this defines the beauty of gesture.
Beautiful art.
El refinamiento y la poesia elevados a altisimos niveles......Hermoso!
wow that is so amazing! it's the most touching kabuki play I've ever seen!
this was really touching and sad...it brought tears in my eyes by the end.
she seems like someone who walked straight out from a painting!
That is a man
Yeh he is a man 😉
@sabrina Imagine the reaction of some guy when he find out that she is actually a man. Lol
Such a brilliant comment in a thread about a video of pure beauty and art.

The off voice destroys the video! The magic of Kabuki is the suggestion and everyone have to find all explanations by himself.
His movements are so delicately precise, I can see why this man is such a celebrated onnagata. When was this filmed? Tamasaburo must be over fifty by now.
I wanted to see this Kabuki star. Not my type of spectacle but thanks for the explanations, it is interesting.
that is beautiful.
Nice and elegant!
Este artista en especial... es un monstruo!!!

Pure art transformed to dance
personally, I found the commentary interesting and added to the flavour of it. Though i do agree it does detract from the performance itself.

This Japanese poetry makes me crazy! To sensual, the best!

Beautiful :)
Top 10 kamukis dances
Amazing very beauty..
The samisen I can barely endure, but that caterwauling is ONE aspect of Japanese culture that I can cheerfully forgo.
You came to it too late! I love both because I grew up in Japan
@diamantisa there are some places in japan that don't but there too are some who tie it at the front for easy access especially if no one could assist you as you dress up.

Esto es poesía
I wonder if the lyrics tell the story as the actor moves.
you helped me s much in Drama for school
even if you did you probably wouldn't understand the lyrics cause it is really hard for native speakers to understand that. It is spoken in a weird way.
I would not have guessed that love was on her mind.
@mokkshaa Thanks, I'm fairly certain I wrote that response around 4 am! I'm happy that others could understand it. lol
True, I would have preferred that myself

@xxzerawriotxx First off I wasn't talking to you I was talking to mister "Have sex with Kabuki GIRL". Second I have no problem with the way that Kabuki is performed, it IS an art style after all, and a very unique one at that. So please, don't jump down my throat without looking at the whole post...

@mikeeG77 from the way i read it i think that is a little insensitive but i couldnt blame you. oh and if some smart japanese mentor comes by and reads your comment he would most likely say that you trapped yourself through your own words.
Nobody said it was. The narrator repeatedly said "courtesan" throughout the video.
Are there any versions of the Tamasaburo videos without the narration?
If you see Kabuki dance performed by Tamasaburou please search "Sagi musume Tamasaburo" or "Musume Dojoji Tamasaburo",and he is acting in Kabuki please search "Akoya Tamasaburo".
