My girls are grown now, but I insisted that they learn how to drive a stick when they started driving. Oldest can do it in an emergency (whole purpose for them to learn) Youngest drives a stick and really doesn't want anything else. I just never wanted them out with friends and get stuck and not have that skill. Good for you that you knew this was something that was important. I swear every 4 wheeler has a mind of it's own!
If you design your floor plan so that you have a single central closet for all your plumbing needs you will greatly reduce costs and facilitate modifications such as solar hot water etc. It will also reduce water usage as you would not waste cold water while attempting to run hot
When designing the floor plan, you might want to draw it on the ground and make cardboard furniture to make sure that the floor plan works. When designing for plumbing make sure all your fixtures share the same wall. That reduces the amount of plumbing required. It also make sure that you have hot water faster. Have fun, I'm looking forward to each installment.
Or make a wooden model. You have wood :) And in your copious spare time you can sit inside and whittle model furniture. Or just rough it out by drawing on little offcuts. I found a very rough "architectural model" helped a lot, not least for answering questions like "can we get our king size mattress up the stairs". They also fascinate neighbours and family, and if you do make it a little nice you can use it as a doll house if/when there are kids.
Full size floor plan drawn in the yard: Cannot beat that! If you can get some junk furniture (no point exposing good stuff to the weather) and place them in the "rooms", you could even live a day to see how it will all work!

Love the Superhero outfit! Prior to buying my 1980 Honda Prelude, way back when, I had only driven a stick around a neighborhood in Victoria, BC for about 15 minutes. I drove out of the dealership vowing that my stick would do things My Way...lol. It was a jerky couple of days at first, but in the end it was the most fun driving I ever had until I traded it in 10 years later. Next time Jesse leaves, as long as the truck is in good shape, just drive that thing! You'll do great.
Jessie is a freaking rock star self made man but he is so lucky to have such a sweet soul hard working companion by his side. So it's all equal dear! I know by my old age that you guys are going to make it happen in everything you set goals for.
We are building our permaculture homestead in Northern Vermont and we watch your progress almost every day. We like the construction detail in the videos and how you work as a couple to get things done. We are also inspired by your hot tub, though, we are building the house first! We also appreciate your notes of nerdyness that waft from your loving banter. Stay warm as the jaws of winter slowly close on your (and our) farmhouses.

And about the skillsets you brought up: driving a stick, dressing game, and pressure-canning: these are all going to be super-valuable down the road. About Jesse's super-off-grid skills- Black and Decker offers a homeowner's book with basics of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and a lot of other skills. It might be worth tucking away in your library as a way to dip your toes into construction projects- so the next time he steps away for some time you can surprise him with your handiwork (though I'm sure he already knows just how capable you are!)
I think you are from Orange County, California and so I have to say you are surprisingly awesome. I know you background story, but for you to embrace this lifestyle so genuinely the "simple life" must have been just below the surface waiting in your heart for someone like Jessie to wake it up. The folks that set up the homestead we just bought, in Alaska, came up from California in the 50's and set up the homestead from scratch like you guys are, living in a small trailer house. I always thought that by this time in my life I could have gotten a off grid homestead. However after a fall and breaking my back which led to congestive heart failure and major blood clots in both legs I have to settle for just watching your adventures. I have to say I never thought I would see you running around in a cape and underwear, LOL now that's funny.

I hope you have figure this out by now, but you ALWAYS need at least 1 spare LP tank so when the one in use runs out you can quickly hook up the spare.

I always like to plan that anyone could break a leg skiing or need to wheel a baby carriage into a house.) Ps...I'll teach you (and anyone to drive stickshift). My favorite (main) way to drive. Learned because my Dad insisted that all five of his children learned so that in an emergency, no matter where we were, we could always help someone get to a hospital, etc.)
I must say that designing your own Home can be extremely satisfying. I am just an amateur architect but I design homes SPECIFICALLY for off-grid living. My favorite is an earth-sheltered 3 bedroom, 2 bath place and my latest is a 2-story 2+ bedroom, 2 bath with covered outdoor dining/living space.I'm kinda sorry that you moved away from Oregon (which I would DEARLY love to return too!) and I am assuming you went to Idaho (judging by the scenery around your place. Good choice!). Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, right?I really enjoyed your vid about installing the cistern system (a plan I've had in mind all along) and I think that the solar system you've put up is a good small start. If the wind blows regularly there, I would suggest looking into a VAWT (Vertical Axis Wind Turbine) to augment the solar panels.BTW; I just subscribed to your channel ~Andrea~

I really should start putting them down on paper! I will be learning how to use AutoCAD next quarter and I am really looking forward to working on my house plans with it.
Rock Dog ah, cool. OK. Thank you for the update. I've been doing the same for decades, and tinkering at my suburb home to sharpen basic building skills, but I am really ready to make the next step.
Definitely take some time this winter to look into a DIY Tesla PowerWall. Sure, it's 60% lighter, but you wont be carrying it around, for you guys they have a higher power density, and they can be drain 100% without damage to the batteries. More power in a smaller footprint. And when properly cared for, a much longer life than deep cycle lead acid. You can get them nearly free from used power tool packs, laptops, etc. There are tons of TH-cam channels, and a great FB page to teach you how to do it safely.
My wife and 2 children have been off grid in the most northern part of Maine for nearly 6 years now. The first year was hardest. looks like you guys have got it together. one thing we did that you haven't yet is add wind power. Home Depot sells a 400 w turbine for around $500 I think. It really adds to your power especially on cloudy days and nights. The wind keeps blowing sun or not. once we put in our wind and solar we cut our generator time to 3 gals of fuel a month and that was only to power tools during a building project. Welcome to the world of off grid living we find it the only way to live. Think of adding some goats, a milk cow and a few feeder pigs. We let our chickens and animals free range. Yes we do occasionally lose one to wildlife but still worth it. Plus the manure is great for the garden. Think of putting up a plastic greenhouse it will extend your growing time. we have fresh veggies from April to Jan. With a grow light and a Woodburning stove the greenhouse really helps.
What an awesome, intelligent young lady. And a willingness to learn. Something I find lacking in today's youth. You guys are doing a great job. Can't wait to see how it all turns out for ya'll (Yep, I'm a hillbilly) LOL!!

Update as I am watching. :P You can create your broth in the pressure cooker pot and be able to extract the majority within 5 hours, with the bone structure crushing into powder in your hands. I use an All american as it is super heavy Duty. I have found that using pork or beef bones produces a lot of gelatin. Chicken bones not so much.

Just stumbled on to your vlog. Have watched two episodes and I like them. I've had a little over a half dozen hobby farms over 40 yrs or so. I would do it all over again. I live in Minnesota now but did live in Montana for 5 years. I miss the scenery. Your view is outstanding. Keep it up and never give up. Sometimes you need a break to regroup and catch your breath but then hit it again. Glen
You need to put a cover on your compost heap, excess rain is not good for it. Also, it's a good idea to have 3 sections, one is empty and you turn one section into the empty one to rotate and aerate the mixture, then the other section gets turned into the one you just emptied

Keep your floor plan simple and basic. You can always add on to it in the future. Remember, insulation is best added while the structure is new.

It really adds to your power especially on cloudy days and nights. The wind keeps blowing sun or not. once we put in our wind and solar we cut our generator time to 3 gals of fuel a month and that was only to power tools during a building project.
Welcome to the world of off grid living we find it the only way to live. Think of adding some goats, a milk cow and a few feeder pigs. We let our chickens and animals free range. Yes we do occasionally lose one to wildlife but still worth it. Plus the manure is great for the garden. Think of putting up a plastic greenhouse it will extend your growing time. we have fresh veggies from April to Jan. With a grow light and a Woodburning stove the greenhouse really helps.
What an awesome, intelligent young lady. And a willingness to learn. Something I find lacking in today's youth. You guys are doing a great job. Can't wait to see how it all turns out for ya'll (Yep, I'm a hillbilly) LOL!!

You can create your broth in the pressure cooker pot and be able to extract the majority within 5 hours, with the bone structure crushing into powder in your hands. I use an All american as it is super heavy Duty.
I have found that using pork or beef bones produces a lot of gelatin. Chicken bones not so much.

Just stumbled on to your vlog. Have watched two episodes and I like them. I've had a little over a half dozen hobby farms over 40 yrs or so. I would do it all over again. I live in Minnesota now but did live in Montana for 5 years. I miss the scenery. Your view is outstanding. Keep it up and never give up. Sometimes you need a break to regroup and catch your breath but then hit it again. Glen

You should use those stairs as a template to terrace most of the hill into a garden!
You need to put a cover on your compost heap, excess rain is not good for it.
Also, it's a good idea to have 3 sections, one is empty and you turn one section into the empty one to rotate and aerate the mixture, then the other section gets turned into the one you just emptied
