It's fascinating how insecure and stupid folks are when they demonstrate they aren't capable of enough focus to understand what's being demonstrated. I knew this master many decades ago. His level of focus is unparalleled. Anyone who can do better.make a video, with or without a live throat..post it..or shut up.

But many of the things he taught us I have carried with me for the rest of my life. I'm almost 63 years old, I run 3-5 miles every day and train in boxing, and I attribute my ability to train in something physical to Sensei. He's a great man. This is my teacher. Master Ochiai is an ambassador of the Japanese martial arts Washin Ryu (a sister style of Goju Ryu). He is a very soft spoken man who is in his 80's. That sword is sharp. I have seen and held it myself. For those who doubt I can attest that this is not fake. He is an amazing man. The person who was laying down is his son. He used to do it when he was 10 or so and he's in his 40's. I have sparred with him. He hit me once and it was like a steel rod going through me.

    • @danr5462

      I was in his dojo in the 1980s. It was a great honor to spar him. Once he hit me in the solar plexus in such a way that I felt nothing, just a light tap. I acknowledged his point, bowed and got back into fighting stance. 3 seconds later, I crumbled to the ground, temporarily not able to stand or breath. Everyone laughed. I laughed too. But that's how great he was. His movement and his precision. It was almost like magic

  • @Iaazathoth
    @Iaazathoth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +440

    This is not fake. It is incredibly dumb and amounts to a well practiced trick with a sword. First, no real Japanese sword art demonstrates this sort of thing. You will never, ever, never, ever see something like this at a traditional embu for any sword art in Japan. There are several reasons for this. First, it shows nothing of value for the use of the sword. Second, it is a ridiculous risk to take with a student's life for the pure purpose of showing off. Third, it would be considered inappropriate and embarrassing given the historical viewpoint of tameshigiri (test cutting) which used to be done on criminals and prisoners of war. It is a dark piece of history that the Japanese would rather forget. So much so, that some schools in Japan forbid any test cutting of any type, even on tatami, which is now the standard target.
    What he is doing is using the part of the blade closest to the habaki like a paper cutter to cut almost straight down, pressing, rather than swinging the blade through the apple. This lessens the chance he will cut his student by eliminating the function of the blade as it was designed. It is a parlor trick. That doesn't mean he isn't cutting the apple, but he isn't using the sword in a way for which the blade was designed. Despite the announcer saying a "full swing of the sword," it is nothing of the sort. It is like Shaolin monks bending spears. It's still dangerous, but there is a specific technique to it that is for its own purpose and not much else. It takes practice, but it has very, very little, if anything, to do with fighting. It is a show.

    • @Dreez76
      @Dreez76 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Precisely. A "full swing" would've ended bloody and not on TH-cam.
      I know from personal experience how sharp Katana's are and they're not to be played with like a normal kitchen knife.. No matter what your controll is, a "full swing" would've applied the full power and sharpness of the Katana and caused an instant death to the person.
      Katana's deserve more respect then cleaving apples infront of people....

  • @kaizoebara

    This is an old stunt that has been on display over and over with or without blindfold. Years ago I've seen a Vietnamese master doing multiple cuts blindfolded wielding dual sabers at the Budo-Gala.
    Despite what all the fans say, it is a trick: Not only does he use the portion near the handle that has much less momentum than the monouchi, but he also breaks his swing mid-stroke and does a push cut instead of a drawcut.
    You can try this little experiment at home: place an apple on the skin of a raw pork roast and punch your biggest kitchen knife through the apple like in the video. You will find that the blade splits the apple, but doesn't break the skin unless it is extremely sharp. Skin or meat is actually quite hard to cut w/o a slicing motion.
    That is not to say that this stunt can be done by everybody, far from it. You need a lot of training in order to be able to manipulate a sword in that manner, especially blindfolded. Indeed, it can be extremely dangerous - volunteers who ended up in the ER with a cut throat can attest to that.
    Yet, stunts like these don't demonstrate martial prowess. I'd rather see a BB cut mid-flight or even just some plain ol' tameshigiri.

    • @Todesnuss
      @Todesnuss 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have several quite sharp blades at home and can confirm that just with pressure they don't really stand a chance against skin.

      That is a bit wrong. Notice how he cuts with the lower end of the blade. That is the last part you want to hit with because there is close to know power generated there. The torque is so low that it does not matter. You want to hit with the last 1/3 of the blade, starting from the tip.

      dude, every sword uses speed to maximise the cutting potential
      every swort is sharpest near the tip and is used primarly in the top end area of the blade
      otherwise halfswording and other techniques would be kinda dumb ;)
      dont confuse european swords with axes and blunt objekts, they are on the same level as asian swords
      in this clip you see a short cut with the lowest part of the blade, so almost no potential in it, and a blade is not cutting just by contact
      to cut with a blade you need to push or pull it
      the apple was very likly split by pressure. human tissue is way more flexible and cut resistant

All these people in the comments section complain on how he's not a real swordsman. It's because he's not. He is a karate instructor, so in tune with his own body he actually was contracted with cancer, and was able to fight it off purely through willpower. He truly is an amazing man. Someone said in comments ''it looked like the blade bounced of his throat'', then other comments ''blade is not sharp''.
    Well look closer. Blade does bounce, blade is well sharp. Pay attention to the way he cuts the apple : on a cut he turns / slides the blade to one side so it doesnt land on a throat with full force on the actual razor edge. Efectively he just slaps with the sharp edge, because direction of the force shifts from blade edge to its side. Apple simply makes it easier to do the impact shift.
    Take a sharp knife, put it 90 degree to your skin, and scrape it to either side. Now do same motion as if you were to cut directly onto skin - nothing will happen, it will bounce of skin due to angled motion.

      I used to be a student under Master Ochiai, and he has over 60 years of martial arts experience, he first started his karate in Okinawa, and lost in a duel to the death. He had his stomach cut open, and his organs fall out, but by his sheer power of will he managed to somehow put his guts back in his stomach and crawl to the nearest hospital.

      You might laugh but a similar thing happened for real during the Falklands War in '82. A Gurkha soldier had his guts fall out from mortar shrapnel that struck him. He begged for death from a fellow Gurkha nearby who, ignored his pleas, picked up the unravelled guts and stuffed them back in by hand! They strapped his stomach closed with a field-dressing and got him to a nearby aid-station where he survived and recovered fully in a month or so. I read about this in Soldier Magazine (A British Army magazine) commemorating the 20th aniversary of the war in 2002...

    I am appalled. It's as if this man has never heard of daiki zakuretsu in his life. Would a true swordsman, versed in the intricate and time-honored dharma of the otaru watashin, engage in such demeaning parlor trickery as this? I think not. This is a disgrace to takoberujutsuka such as myself who take our art very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very seriously. This is such a disgrace, in fact, that I have shat my hakama, which has in turn upset my mother who now must clean it in the traditional way, per my insistence.

    No good swordsman would pull a stunt that silly. It's embarrassing to those of us who take the study seriously. All the mechanics are wrong. He even puts his sword in his obi incorrectly. The noto was terrible: no saya biki whatsoever. He just recklessly shoves it on in there like a virgin on prom night. (Lousy zanshin, too.) Anyone who has taken more than a couple months of sword could do better. He actually hit his throat on the first cut, so the sword wasn't even sharp. Regardless, disgraceful parlor tricks. This guy is no swordsman at all.

    I've been practicing karate for more than thirty years, and I don't think I've ever seen a worse martial arts demonstration. It would have been merely bad and in poor taste if the man performing the cut had any skill, but this is terrible. The cut is so sloppy you can actually see the sword bounce off his assistant's throat, and he has to repeat the cut at a closer distance to actually finish dividing the apple into two pieces. It's as if someone devised this stunt as a way to convince people martial arts is nothing more than people learning tricks, like a magic act or a trained animal.

      +John Hanley if you look at the slow motion, he actually makes two separate cuts on the apple, leaving it in 3 pieces. (the first cut was on the left side of the apple from his POV, and the second on the right side of the core).
      I'm not a kendo practitioner so I defer to you on the other points you make, and I'm in agreement about using martial arts as stunts/tricks. Unfortunately, there is a history of these types of demonstrations in many schools (going back to HK/China and Japan). Sort of a form of marketing and saying, our school is better than your school.
