I pretty much guarantee this is based on a true story. Richard didn't shy away from telling true stories, even if they were embarrassing for himself. I'm sure it's embellished a lot, but I have no doubt it's based in truth.

@@lipby I grew up in South Jersey and plenty of that shit form South Philly spilled over to Jersey. EVERYBODY knew somebody that was connected. The little town I grew up in produced a hit man for the mafia. They referenced him in the movie The Irishman. He was the guy that dressed up as flower delivery guy, knocked on the door of John McCullough and when he guy opened the door, he shot him right in the face. This same guy also walked into a diner in SJ and shot a couple of guys sitting in a booth. There were 47 people in the place and when the police arrived, nobody saw anything.

Richard was the first to put real life experiences into his comedy as opposed to just telling jokes. This same comedy special has him addressing his near death experience 2 years earlier when he (yes, really) set himself on fire and burned 65% of his body. He was never the same afterwards.

  • @surlechapeau

I've seen this so many times because I'm from Youngstown, Ohio, historically known as Crimetown USA (somtimes Murdertown), where in the 1960s car bombings were so common they were known as a "Youngstown Tune Up." They used to say that for $2 a barber would cut your hair, but for $5 he'd start your car.
In 2022, there was a successful podcast called "Crooked City: Youngstown, Ohio" that used first person accounts of the city's mafia activities, primarily from the late 1960s on.
It would have been so cool to see Richard Pryor live, but it would have been even better to see him in my hometown. Alas, the performance he's talking about with Satin Doll must have been before I was born.

You mighta recognized Richard's voice from movies--he had a HUGE movie career. Silver Streak, Brewster's Millions, Stir Crazy... he was even in one of the OG Superman movies with Chris Reeve.
