I remembered when D.O.C was Doc Tre from the Fila Fresh Crew in Dallas and we used to to meet up at different spots like Shamrock skating ( In Lancaster) End zone (In Oak Cliff), Stars(In the Grove), and other places throughout the city to hear different crews battle rap. D.O.C was a few years older than me and we didn't have too many rapper being on the radio except for crews like Nemesis and Ron C being played but when I heard "Dunk the Funk" and "I hate to go to work". I started writing myself. Salute to all the rapper from Dallas that never got to spot light yourselves but we pay homage to D.O.C!
During the time of this classic I was 8 years old & heavy on NWA & Ruthless plus I used to watch Yo! MTV Raps & Rap City religiously The D.O.C. had the it factor & I still listen to it ‘till this day!✊🏾💪🏾💯#89classic
The DOC's album, DJ Yella deserves some credit as well in the production of this album, was the freshest album to drop from the west coast at the time in 1989. It showed that the west coast had dope lyricists that weren't just so called gangsta rappers like NWA, Ice T, Too Short, but true MC's like the east coast was presenting in the likes of Rakim, LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, KRS ONE, Chuck D and so forth. The DOC's album along with Above The Law's 1990 February released album: Livin' Like Hustlers (which brought G Funk to the game) were two of the dopest albums of their era and were both basically recorded in 1989. The albums also had very little cussing/nwords/bwords - just dope lyrics and dope beats with a conscious twist in many of the songs.
Those two albums, two of my favorites of all time, showed that the westcoast was more than gangsta rap (NWA/Ice T/Too Short) because both of those albums were very different. The DOC's album had dope beats while showcasing his lyrical ability, style and flow which no westcoast or eastcoast artist was on at the time. The DOC as he said was the "freshest of the freshest". ATL's debut album introduced G-Funk to the genre and was full of dope beats, dope lyrics, conscious lyrics, with a street edge to it. Also, there wasn't a lot of cussing or nwords, bwords or either album.
@@JeramieTate I believe everyone knows that as it was said in the uploaded video. He still came out of LA with his first album after being a part of Ruthless Records. He is considered to be a west coast artist - it's not where you are from but where you are at.
@ I’m suggesting not to put the D.O.C. in a small box like that. He is arguably the greatest rapper of all time. You played that album all the way through, no skips. The man had an album with 97% no cursing. One of the greatest rap albums ever by one of the greatest to ever do it.
D O C's album ruled Saint Louis sound systems the summer it came out. That's when they started passing out the "loud music" fines ". So much talent. His contribution to the art is underrated. My 1st set of personalized plates was FNKY NF...Much love and respect.
@@JeramieTate Ice Cube, Ice T and Tupac are the top west coast MCs. After that you got Spice 1, E 40, DOC, Too Short, Kurupt, Boots Riley (The Coup), Baba Zumbi (Zion I), Paris, Richie Rich, King T, WC, Kam, MC Eiht, Cold 187um, Ras Kass, Xzibit, MC Ren, Gift Of Gab (Blackalicious), K Dot, and a few more in the conversation. Snoop without the DOC guiding him is a weak rapper. After Doggystyle Snoop fell off and never got back up to his lyrical delivery level on his debut album.
@ I go back to King T, King Sun and Mix Masterspade. I knew Richie Rich when he was in 415 and when Tupac was rapping with Ray Luv. I will do you one better. To Tray Dee ; Crook rapped in the wake up Show; im the new modern new D.O.C!!!
He should be in the GOAT conversation
Top ten LP, easily
Career too short just like Biggie... neither are top 10. But their debut albums could each be argued as top 10 albums.
@ Biggie was trash to me. Great is great. He wrote for Eazy, the Chronic, NWA, Doggy style , & his own album. What do you mean? He taught Snoop!

I agree but that line always cracks me up

It was similar to the Marvin Gaye Hear My Dear album cover.
