This has such a strong emotional theme. It reminds me of "Achilles come down" by gang of youths, a bit. In the best way possible. You make really awesome music, Marijke!
...how *precisely* did you get this out while I'm currently working on an Orpheus story? Well, you've created the theme for my Orpheus. How dare you. Seriously, this song is amazing and somehow manages to encapsulate all the feelings I had planned for Orpheus. Unfortunately, it's also signed Eurydice's death in stone, while I was trying to decide if I wanted to let her live in the end. Regardless, my tremendous thanks for this amazing song, as well as your others.
Thank you very much! I'll consider letting her live. It's really a matter of which ending is better, them being together again, or their other loved ones finally convincing him that his desperation to bring her back is only hurting everyone more. I keep leaning towards the latter, but I also want to give them a perfect "happily ever after" instead of the bittersweet ending, after all the suffering I know I'm putting them through. Maybe I'll leave it undecided until I get there, and see what truly fits the story best.
Lyrics (by ear): Love cast me down into the dark And memories drag me down But willingly I walk to hell To where you stay around These caves aren't meant for one like me I wander through them still The torch I lit with you burnt out Without you I am killed Love cast me down into the dark Oh ever since you died My heart just pumps a dusty drought Without you by my side If living on is agony, I'd rather fall with you If living on is agony, I know what I must do I call upon whoever is there to grant my humble plea I'd die a death a thousand times for my Eurydice Let her rise or let me fall, but never let us part Leave me with her or cleave me in two The breaking of my heart Love, cast me down into the dark By torches I wandered alone Thoughts of you possessed me still And drove me from my home Do I dare wait by hellish gates And waste till I am gone Its better if we are as one I'll join you with my song I call upon whoever is there to grant my humble plea I'd die a death a thousand times for my Eurydice Let her rise or let me fall, but never let us part Leave me with her or cleave me in two The breaking of my heart There is no hope, there is no light There is no future without you by my side What would you say, if you saw me now Love would you let me lay my lyre in the ground Why do I hope, you'd carry on That you would choose to live long after I'm gone Would you choose rest, would you choose peace Would you choose space to live beyond all this grief Can I have hope, would that be fine What kind of person chooses life at this time I've been wrong, I've been burned I have watched my love turn I have promised to bleed, just to keep her with me And maybe its selfish or maybe its wise But maybe I'll give up my promise to die Oh, what kind of people won't keep his word I don't know yet but maybe I'll learn --- I call upon whoever is there to grant my humble plea I've died a death a thousand times for my Eurydice I mourned her loss, I followed her But I felt the strength to restart I loved her, but I still feel the beating of my heart
There is so much emotion in this song. It creates a knot of tension in my core and then relief. Also, this is a phenomenal demonstration of your range.
You achieved that so well. I was playing my trumpet when the video dropped and so I was playing along (poorly) until, you got to a note that was too low for me to play.
“Can I have hope?” Tearing up from this line onwards. And the EMOTION in your voice at “I’ve been wrong, I’ve been burnt” HURT. Also your insanely high riffs at the end were AMAZING
Thank you!! The bridge was the changed part bc teenage me had kind of a corny bridge, but I thought since it had to be the turning point between suicidal Orpheus to Orpheus clawing his way to hope kicking and fighting, there has to be more oomf to it
Your voice is seriously so pretty, and your lyrics are so meaningful. Usually you can only get one at a time, and so this combination is amazing. I can't wait for your next song!!
This is gorgeous, and I'm loving this new take! Per your commentary, I've yet to come across a version that 'makes him happy because Eurydice comes back' - Can you please elaborate on that? The artwork is also gorgeous - Am I seeing it right that the girl in green is Eurydice and the shadowy figure behind Orpheus is basically the 'self' of his depression, since it echoes his shape? Also, your voice sounds quite a lot like two of my fave artists (in some songs, anyway) - Heather Alexander and Heather Dale - Beautiful!
Hello! Thank you so much for listening. 1. It's a very medieval/early modern take. I saw it in the lay Sir Orfeo, which is a Middle English retelling; then, there's some operas/ballets where, because Orpheus is prepared to die for love, Love bring Eurydice back (i'm thinking of Orfeo ed Eurydice (1764) here). I don't actually have a problem with Orpheus being happy or Eurydice coming back, I just reject the idea that he has to suffer more to Earn that happiness. 2. Yes! Green is Eurydice, and the purple/shadow is his depression. I like to think Eurydice would want him to live. 3. I *love* Heather Dale so much, definitely an inspiration (I'm actually hoping to do some Arthurian inspired songs soon)--I'd never heard Heather Alexander, but I'll have to check out that music now!
As always this song is amazing, I'm so glad that I found this channel, also I understand that it's probably been heavily edited but even being able to write something at all like this in high school is amazing, I mean I couldn't even make anything anywhere near as good as this now (Though that's not saying much.) Also fun mostly unrelated fact I got to see Hadestown on the 28th of September this year which was great.
1. The song is actually remarkably similar to how it was back then; what changed was the bridge and the very end. Original bridge lyrics were (with a very different melody/chord progression): "Did this become a game of love Or one of death and life? I loved so much I longed for death I begged for the ferry's ride Love speak to me The poet says A hero'd keep his word It takes so much to keep alive To live on without her- It takes so much to keep alive Don't tell me how to hurt." And then the last chorus was "I mourned her loss, I followed her But now I'm done falling apart." I wanted to change things to be more... realistic? I suppose. I also don't think some of the lines were the strongest, so I wanted to revamp the whole bridge. 2. Honestly at that point I'd been writing music for a little bit (you should've seen what I did in middle school; it wasn't great), but the entire idea is that you learn what you like to do over time. I'm sure your music is much better than you give yourself credit for; we're always our own worst critics. 3. Hadestown tears my heart out all the time (the end of Wait for Me Reprise? oof).... one day I'll see it in person.
@@Marijke-Perry That's all really interesting to hear. Also you definitely should, Hadestown is great just to listen to, but it is absolutely magical to see in person. The performances are amazing especially in person and the stage work is phenomenal to the extent it is definitely fighting for the best I've ever seen if person, with the other contender being the Lion King musical which had/has life sized (Or at least very large) puppets of various African animals such as and Elephants dancing around the stage, and shadow puppet shows. It's probably my favourite out of the 3 musicals I've seen live (The other two being Six the Musical and the Lion King musical) though I've loved all of them. So basically if you ever have the chance and you can afford it I'd highly recommend trying to see it.

I try. I've been really emotional about Orpheus since childhood, so it seemed fitting to revisit something for him now that I'm doing music more.

Oh no! You can still save her if you'd like, I love those versions too--I just want Orpheus to be happy...
Best of luck to you on your writing!

Lyrics (by ear):
Love cast me down into the dark
And memories drag me down
But willingly I walk to hell
To where you stay around
These caves aren't meant for one like me
I wander through them still
The torch I lit with you burnt out
Without you I am killed
Love cast me down into the dark
Oh ever since you died
My heart just pumps a dusty drought
Without you by my side
If living on is agony, I'd rather fall with you
If living on is agony, I know what I must do
I call upon whoever is there to grant my humble plea
I'd die a death a thousand times for my Eurydice
Let her rise or let me fall, but never let us part
Leave me with her or cleave me in two
The breaking of my heart
Love, cast me down into the dark
By torches I wandered alone
Thoughts of you possessed me still
And drove me from my home
Do I dare wait by hellish gates
And waste till I am gone
Its better if we are as one
I'll join you with my song
I call upon whoever is there to grant my humble plea
I'd die a death a thousand times for my Eurydice
Let her rise or let me fall, but never let us part
Leave me with her or cleave me in two
The breaking of my heart
There is no hope, there is no light
There is no future without you by my side
What would you say, if you saw me now
Love would you let me lay my lyre in the ground
Why do I hope, you'd carry on
That you would choose to live long after I'm gone
Would you choose rest, would you choose peace
Would you choose space to live beyond all this grief
Can I have hope, would that be fine
What kind of person chooses life at this time
I've been wrong, I've been burned
I have watched my love turn
I have promised to bleed, just to keep her with me
And maybe its selfish or maybe its wise
But maybe I'll give up my promise to die
Oh, what kind of people won't keep his word
I don't know yet but maybe I'll learn
---
I call upon whoever is there to grant my humble plea
I've died a death a thousand times for my Eurydice
I mourned her loss, I followed her
But I felt the strength to restart
I loved her, but I still feel the beating of my heart
Thank you!!!!
There is so much emotion in this song. It creates a knot of tension in my core and then relief. Also, this is a phenomenal demonstration of your range.
thank you! when i redid the bridge i wanted it to be more challenging to sing since i think orpheus should get a difficult melody
You achieved that so well. I was playing my trumpet when the video dropped and so I was playing along (poorly) until, you got to a note that was too low for me to play.
Wait playing along with the trumpet is so fun

Brb calling Hades to make sure these two end up in Elysium. What? You thought I was always heartless?
(Jokes aside I'm sobbing rn)
I love how much emotion you put into your performances ❤ it really sells the stories you tell. Also love the speedpaint!
I waffled over whether to play it straight or to sing with emotion, and I decided on emotion. I can sing pretty some other time
I wish you were more recognized, you sing as if you shed the tears of those you write of!
incredible song, if a little hard to listen to at times
i hope hard in a good way and not in a "i botched the recording" sense
@@Marijke-Perry yeah I meant emotionally difficult, the recording is great lol
I'm glad and also a little sorry for the emotion 🫂
Agreed
Your voice is seriously so pretty, and your lyrics are so meaningful. Usually you can only get one at a time, and so this combination is amazing. I can't wait for your next song!!
Do you have a tumblr or discord server of some kind?
I don't, sorry! This is just a hobby of mine, so managing something like a discord server could get really messy and time consuming.
This is gorgeous, and I'm loving this new take!
