The arab conquest of Sicily (827 - 902)

  • This short history documentary is about how Saracens seized control of the entire island of Sicily from the Byzantine Empire in a prolonged series of conflicts from 827 to 902. The conquest has began in 827, when the commander of the island's fleet, Euphemius, rose in revolt against the Byzantine Emperor Michael II. Euphemius sought the aid of the Aghlabid emirs of Ifriqiya, which in 831 took Palermo, which became the capital of the new Muslim province. The strong fortress of Enna fell in 859, and the city of Syracuse in 878. The fall of the last major Byzantine fortress, Taormina, in 902, is held to mark the completion of the Muslim conquest of Sicily.

The Muslim Arabs ruled Sicily from 827 to 1072, and they built a civilization there, and their monuments, inscriptions, and mosques are still found there. Their dialect contains Arabic words. It is natural to find similarities between them and the Arabs because they mixed with Arabs and Arabs mixed with them. Some of them may be Arabs and he does not know

Very interesting and good video, thanks for sharing. A dialect of Maghrebi Arabic called Siculo-Arabic developed in Muslim Sicily between the 9th and 13th centuries. This was eventually replaced by the Romance dialect which would become Sicilian today. However, on the island of Malta, which was then part of Sicily and was conquered by the Arabs in 871 AD, this Arabic dialect survived beyond the 13th century and developed into Maltese, which has now become the only Semitic language in Europe and is also the national and official language of Malta.😊🇲🇹🙏

The Sicilian side of my family hails from Rometta, the last village in Sicily to fall to the Arab invaders. Many/most of the inhabitants of the city were Greek-speaking Christians who were all slaughtered or sold into slavery and according to what I read online the village was then repopulated with Muslims. My 23and Me DNA shows "Egyptian" as well as "Arabian" DNA (in addition to North African) as part of my Sicilian heritage so I am pretty sure we in large part descend from these people along with the other inhabitants of the area of course.
