I absolutely adore Gravity Rush 2, or as it's known in Japan, Spider-Sonic: Odyssey of the Wild.

Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of the games, but the consistency which this game plays against all of its strengths in the missions it presents REALLY hurts the overall vibe.
Most of the Main missions are decent enough, though a few are pretty meh. It's the side missions that are truly awful. Doing police recruit training. Acting movie scenes where you cannot use your powers. Stealth missions.
Like wtf are they doing? How do you figure doing mundane activities WITHOUT powers is a fun way to spice up the gameplay? Or STEALTH? The game has a terrible camera system, and it just simply isn't designed for any sort of stealth, yet you get stuck sneaking around the streets... and when you do these missions they drag on.
Hell, 99% of games always follow this rule of 3's business. A boss will have 3 phases. You will do X activity 3 times. ETc.
Not this game. Nope. You're not using your powers to do boring activities?? Well this mission is literally going to keep going. You think it's over but nope, 5 times you will be asked to do this mundane shit and then... wait... one more thing...
Like damn. Is it that hard to build fun missions around the core mechanics that make the game what it is?

There’s no other game as innovative and beautifully atmospheric as Gravity Rush.

This is why emulation is so important. This game and its prequal are absolute art.
The small details, the art direction, the amazing use of physics etc its such an absolute gem of a game to play.
The art book is well worth it.
Just the act of flying around is just..sublime.
One day, when the ps4 is emulated, i do wonder if like other emulators youll be able to up the framerate and resolution. Hopefully the game isnt tied to the framerate lol.
Thanks for this retrospective, will a thirdgame ever be made? Not likely with the devs leaving and making their own companies.

The Gravity Rush games were the biggest surprise of 2022 for me when it comes to gaming. 2 especially, its probably a top 5 game of all time for me and this video perfectly captures why. Its a shame the games didnt perform better, Id love to see them both on PC with unlocked framerates and better loading times (since even on PS5 the loading isnt as good as it could be) unlikely but one can hope. Also great video! Was great hearing so much love for this game

  • @nickthepick8043
    @nickthepick8043 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

This is seriously your finest work yet.
From the get-go, I've noticed you make good use of excellent transitions via the soundtrack, and your vocal performance is excellent as ever. I seriously encourage you to try doing Audiobooks or something. You would have a wild time with it.
As for the game itself, I heard bits and pieces of it, but now I finally understand why this games has the following that it has. Specifically the sequel you're covering right now.
Honestly, this game's control scheme looks like butter, and everyone loves butter. I like the idea of using the PS4's flat grid for once, as I never really use it in games.
Secondly, the design of Cat and her friends coupled with their personality(Mainly appreciation of good food) are immediately endearing, and I especially love how they are going through the cliche of going up against opponents far superior than they are at this particular moment. When I say Cliche's, I mean it in a good way. Cliches are there for a reason, it's how they remix them that counts.
Thirdly, I like how at the beginning you're in the miner suit. I've told you many times how I played Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, yes? Well, I compare this game's opening to that one in the sense that, yes, you are in a mining facility wearing a space suit, and it encumbers you, but you get a sense of foreboding, and that you're vulnerable. I kinda get similarity vibes with this game's opening, while obviously the tone of this game is completely different from KotoR II's
"A Red Apple Fell from the Sky"
Is it just me, or was that verse a reference for how Isaac Newton discovered Gravity? I'm not sure if you covered it in the first game's review. I just found that interesting.
I got a lot more ammo on how to say this is a great magnum opus of a review, but I just wanted to say excellent work on this review man.
Honestly, you got the right idea when it comes to making quality content against vast quantities of it.

Fantastic review and sums up how I and my partner felt when we both completed the game over a year ago.
Such a special and absolutely beautiful game. The world design and everything is just so good. Not to mention the animations. My God the animations right down to how the civilians interact with you and everything else. Just beautiful.
I hold hope that maybe Sony will allow a pc version to come to steam as it's been doing recently. This game at true 4k and 60fps+ would be simply beautiful.
As it stands though I am so grateful to be able to have had this experience. The art book is worth the price too.
It's fate reminds me of Okami and Clover studios.
Anyway, thanks for the video. I'm subscribed and will certainly watch the rest of your wonderful content .

I've just recently done a replay of the original Gravity Rush on PS Vita and finished Gravity Rush 2 in its entirety last night! I appreciate your retrospective, as I've also been a long time fan of Gravity Rush and its charms. Unfortunate as it is, time must move on, but I'm very thankful for the memories this series has given to us.
Although I must say that the first ending of GR2 was absolutely neat, because it took the expectations of players from the first game when they'd assumed they'd already done everything. Unless of course, you decide to keep looking around, then some might notice the mission marker! It was a peasant surprise, and I was glad I kept on playing after the first ending, as the side content is so charismatic and the true ending was a great closure for me.

I kinda wish that this game was Gravity Rush 3, with Gravity Rush 2 being a Vita game (at least originally), covering the events of the Raven Chapter, resolving the temporal shifted lovers sidestory of GR1 onscreen, and melding the comments of the Maid and Spy DLC from GR1 with the missing children case from Overture and ending with a playable fight against the "nameless duo" and getting pulled into the rift leading to the world of Jirga Para Lhao.
In addition to giving loyal Vita fans the new consequential sequel that they were clamoring for (using most of the same Hekesville assets of GR1 to save time and money) starring the Vita's de facto mascot workout trying to port or reduce the console exclusive sequel so that it wouldn't melt the Vita, it would also introduce important concepts like Raven's personality shift, the third Creator, elemental spirits, Dr. Brahman, and a pair of powerful enforcers for GR2 to call back to and give people a greater feeling of satisfaction when they pay off in the PS4 exclusive GR2 (currently GR2). Also, it would allow the Snake Rabbits to show up for GR3's final battle.

When i finsihed gravity rush 2 i had 2 main questions that i was dieing to have answered. for whatever reason it took me till now to finaly play the sequel but now i have id like to say the 2 main questions i had that being "who is kat" and "whats at the top of the world piller" have been answered and i couldnt be happyer with the results. i will say i was a bit dissapointed that the ark didnt get adressed in the main story and was instead a dlc "that i didnt even know was a thing till watching this video" but i am happy with how that got resulved in the dlc i just wish i had known about it before watching this and spoiling what happened.
It is kinda sad though that i left this game for soo long all that time knowing i had more gravity rush to expeirance when im ready to play it but now i have there is no more and probs wont ever be anymore. i think they did rap up all the story i wanted quite nicely and i cant really see how it could continue now so its not the worst thing but its still sad knowing that this seris is over.

I loved the first game. The second never hooked me the same though. Probably because the missions somehow managed to be more boring than the first games. @@PSYLODV I think that, as much as I enjoyed GR1, it was the fresh take on traversal that kept that game going for me. Missions were rarely challenging, exciting or thoughtful - but the sensation was new.
For the sequel, I was really hoping they would improve their missions designs. Sadly they did not, and as a sequel, it didn't have the wow factor in its favor. I had largely done and seen the things in it before.
So the bland, repetitive missions dragged on worse than the first game. They just never seem to leverage what makes the game work when they put their missions together.
Think about how bad the mission in GR2 is, where you help the police officer with his recruit training. You do various boring tasks, like identifying where people stood in a picture, punching enemies without hitting nearby boxes, and taking photos of 'bad guys' in a crowd... and every time you finish one thing THERE IS ANOTHER THING TO DO.
That mission itself feels never ending, and leverages absolutely none of the games strengths.
Then, when you sit back and look at the entirety of the game, you realize most of the missions are like that. That's what I think keeps this series from hitting its stride, especially in drawing more fans in.
If these games had better mission design, and possibly some more emergent world activities to partake in, then there would likely be a GR3, but I get the sense this series isn't going to go any further.

I remember when the end of the game was coming around, i just took pics of everyone. It just felt like the right thing to do since I was going to miss all of them badly. It's been nostalig the few times I revisited the game to see the old pics. There hasn't been too many games to make me feel that way and for that I think I'll forever hold this game dear, perhaps moreso than games I think are otherwise better.
Cos sadly I hate to say it but I think the gameplay is really mediocre at best. Combat is spammy and rather shallow, there's not much to do outside of mission, especially not combat which will never happen outside of a story event, every bit of content that matters is on the map negating the need to actually explore even if said content are mostly mundane sidemissions depicting the daily-life of the inhabitants of this world. Even innocuous tidibits of dialog are on the map. It'd all be better off stumbled upon rather than icons on a map. And the main gameplay gimmick, being able to fall any direction so often ends up meaning that you just point your camera somewhere and wait while Kat falls. "Falling" in itself sounds cool but in practice, it just feels like a less active version of flying.
I do genuinely love the game and none of my issues with it matter to me all that much, i'm happy enough to cherish what we got. Still tho. If Sony wants me to buy a PS5, a Gravity Rush 3 would be quite tempting.

I beat remastered awhile ago and really enjoyed it. The areas were fun, the game is to the point and the gravity mechanics were smooth to control.
I recently started 2 and I’m so fed up with the endless tedium the game subjects you to.
I don’t want to walk a inept dog around the place or play a terrible frisbee mini game that controls like throwing a concrete brick.
I don’t want to talk to boring NPC’s for 10 minutes until I find the right one and then they tell me to find another character who adds nothing to the game.
The combat is awful without upgrades and even then the camera is uncooperative and attacks often miss because Kat wants to hit something under the map or an enemy her attack won’t even reach when there is another target 2 inches in front of her.
Gravity sliding causes the camera to bob up and down in a sickening fashion.
The amount of hit stun is awful, especially during a fight with tons of enemies.
I will finish 2 but so far I wish I had never even bothered. It lacks most of what made remastered enjoyable to play.
