    This channel is the nut. I have been inadvertently using the SC escape from video one my entire life, but the little details you shown have made a big difference, even just today at rounds during a seminar. Can't wait to see the rest! Keep up the awesome vids Jon!

    Please, please, please create a video for each side control position. Being able to escape side control is something I struggle with a lot.

      I would also like to see it explain how to get out when the opponent's full weight is on them rather than having their but or knees on the ground. The guys I roll with will get their hips off of the floor and their full weight is on my ribs making it hard to shrimp out. Of course I may be doing it wrong but that's what I want to try and understand.

    Appreciate the detail of your instruction! For what it's worth, although I have a bunch of training in other arts, I started my bjj walk late in life (very late in life ;) Almost 3 years ago at 59) so that kind of "conceptual based detail mean a lot. And, it has been a cross between needing more detail in some respects and having to much info in my head already from years of wrestling, Hapkido and Marine Corps combat training. So, thank you, keep it up!

    Against lower belts I find they switch their hips when they are too low and can just be timed with a stiff arm and sit up before they consolidate the position. I always explain the mistake after doing it to them but boy can some guys be slow learners ( I feel a bit guilty about getting the same escape time after time ). Thanks for getting me thinking about the push on each shoulder and the lasso. I don't use it at all. Might be partly due to inflexible hips but I need to work on that too.

    So I wanted to post a follow up comment. I’ve really been studying your side control escape videos. My SC escapes still need a ton of work but I’m way better. I tried this one tonight but I think I forgot to bump when I couldn’t create enough distance. This probably meant he was keeping his weight on me. Also, I like how all your escapes seem to have the same basic foundation of the frames and then the forward shrimp. Makes it easy to remember. I do have a question. I get caught frequently with a choke where my opponent is grabbing my collar, steps over my head and uses his leg to push my neck/head and pull the collar. Am I escaping too slow from side control? Am I too flat on my back? Is there something else I can do while working your escape system that also protects me from these types of chokes? Thanks!

    Hi Jon, I just asked a similar question on your other side control escape video, but how do you handle bigger guys trying to Americana the arm framing againstthe neck? When I do that against a stronger guy they switch back to regular side control and lean drive my arm down with their weight, then attack the Americana

    Professor Jon, I have a dumb question. You mentioned that we should forward shrimp in this escape. Why is a forward shrimp better than a regular shrimp? What makes the forward shrimp more effective?

  • @tylerhales2339
    @tylerhales2339 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Any way you can address how to relieve the pressure when your held in the kesa gatame. My coach sometimes gets me in the kesa gatame and keeps his weight heavy on my chest and pulls my neck and head to my chest and it feels like i cant breathe and my chest is about to fold in half haha. Obviously i dont want to get here in the first place but it happens. I know some escapes but by the time i start it he does this to me and i can tap to just the pressure on my chest which is pitiful. Let me know if you can show this somewhere sometime

    Is there any chance you could do another covering the other two positions people normally go in. I would assume I'm they stay in normal side but low down over your hips you would do a preemptive frame (Dan Sweeney did a video for clarification) but I'm unsure what to do it they stay in normal high side but switch their far arm to their near side of your hip and/or swap their Crossfade to the far side of your head as you can no longer get your knee in?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Orange Inc I cover this in a video called side escape near side hip control, also partly addressed in the north south escape video too. If those videos don’t address it you can message me on IG or Messenger and send me a video of what’s giving you hard time and I will make quick video back to send to you to help

      JonThomasBJJ it's hard to get off the path with your free extra detailed videos. Make sure you put ads on them to get something back from all the effort you put in! I'll watch all your ads to get you as much money as I can haha

    I love the explanation between the regular VS forward shrimp but I'm not quite sure I understand it. Could you please explain why the regular shrimp is counterproductive in that side control position? Is it because of their weight distribution?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      aram yeah basically in this case you need to slide your knee in between you and him and when you shrimp you get a little space but can’t continue the motion more than once to continue getting space. With the forward shrimp in this situation for whatever reason it is easier to do the move repeatedly gaining more space each time. Just try both and you should be able to intuitively feel that this is the case.

    • @adamdavidkim
      @adamdavidkim 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JonThomasBJJ I'll definitely have to give it a try. Thank you professor! :)

      JonThomasBJJ the forward shrimp detail blew my mind and I'm guessing this also applies to the regular side control escape? It also now has me thinking that I've been shrimping wrong the whole time and wondering in which type of situations would the regular shrimp be preferred? As you mentioned the forward shrimp seems be better at creating space, which is the main objective. A video covering this would be great if you have the time.

    If you don’t mind me asking, how much do you weigh? The reason I ask is that you don’t look very big which makes your technique a little more impressive since you are not likely using much muscle. I’m a small guy so I try to find techniques from guys who don’t seem to use a lot of muscle.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      theticoboy Hey! Yeah I weigh around 154 Lbs or 70Kg. Technique is important when you are a small dude.

  • @artnos
    @artnos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you do one against someone 230-250lbs? Im 160 and i just cant frame or move

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      artnos This works well vs really large people as well, ultimately there is no magic bullet that always gets you out from side control every time vs a heavy opponent. This is I feel is as about as effective as it gets for this situation. I have used it vs 260 lbs people before. What is happening when you try it?

    • @artnos
      @artnos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When they are passing my guard, they always get chest to chest, I can't seem to brace them, maybe it's psychological, i'm scared. I have had a few injuries (ankle, rib, thumb) from big guys with their weight coming down.
      And like you said when they are chest to chest i'm to late. Elbow in their neck works well. But I can't seem to get my other elbow at their hip and like you said they will follow. And in Kesa Gatame, I didn't know about the forward shrimp thank you for that, I need to work on that.
      I believe you that it works. I need more practice. I usually just end up giving my back and doing a terrible granby/scramble when they try to climb on top.
