The Chainsaw-Built, 15’ Sky Deck is Finished! Pt2 #32

  • After some more chainsaw milling of both white pine and cedar, I was able to finish building the sky deck. Plagued by continued bad weather, it took many days of waiting before I could drag my sleeping bag up there one evening to check out the stars. Because of the solid forest canopy where I live (in a tent, year round) there are very few places to star gaze, so I built this 15" high deck in the middle of the forest.
Because I’ve gotten so many questions about the gear that I use on the channel, here are some of the most important pieces I use every day:
My Favorite Piece of Gear- Chainsaw Helmet amzn.to/3uuW5xB
    Granberg Chainsaw Mill amzn.to/3cdRXvn
How I Keep the Mosquitoes Away! amzn.to/3frenvh
    Big, Black Log-Peeling Knife - Becker BK9 amzn.to/3oZIeOH
The Trailer I Use Behind My 4 Wheeler- Yutrax amzn.to/3fvO8DK
Bug Net Rooms I Use amzn.to/3uwOK0l
Heaters in My Tent and the Deer Castle amzn.to/3frQ7Jh
Thank you all so much for supporting this crazy endeavor! Without you folks donating to Surviving Ringworm, I wouldn't be able to even consider staying out here in the wilderness a second year making videos. You seriously blow my mind!

I was chainsawing some pallets to burn today and thought about your videos 😄 Have you considered putting in a solar panel to charge your batteries?
I just installed a cheap 100w solar panel kit on my shed and it keeps 2 car batteries charged enough to charge my drill batteries and run some DC motion sensor flood lights.
May be enough to keep your tool batteries and electronic equipment charged.

I've considered it but with solid tree cover (and Michigan weather,) they wouldn't get much sun. Also, just about everything nice is out of my budget if I want to keep living out here going forward.
But several people have asked if I had a Patreon account so I finally set one up. If anything comes in from that, I might just have to give a panel a try anyway.

A good place to work in the rain is below or you could make another floor midway up and have room below and a milling area below. You could also use the extra 3 feet of wood for steps. If you did have spiral stair case, it could go around one tree and open on the outside of the floor you built. Just plan for both floors landings and exits if you do. A straight staircase would make bring up lumber easier or you could have a pulley or two on a tree out to the side, above your floor level. You could also have a roof skirting around your floor for more room below.

My knees were knocking when you butted the flooring ! Reminds me when I built big shed, I first slapped together a mezzanine floor about half way up to the top, so I had a platform to stand on to complete the roof, shed with 6x20 foot poles, you’re balance and skill is amazing ⛩ courageous as🔭 bring the telescope as well 😷 don’t forget to vaccinate all your household, stay alert 😜

Have you looked into a rain roof to collect drinking water for the warm months? A nice large dry storage area under it would make a perfect place for storing the misc wood you cut along with space for larger items to avoid needing to tarp them. Some IBC totes with the tanks painted to reduce algae growth inside should let you get all the water you need for drinking, cooking, bathing and cleaning without needing to look at the swamp water till the temp is freezing and you want to drain the system for over winter protection.

Smart! That's actually what I use for water out here- IBC totes. Think there was an earlier video of making a water tower of sorts out of a couple of them.

Haha. Got a good chuckle out of that one.
Maybe I should have a disclaimer/recommendation before every video?
Like, "Prepare yourself. The Ringworm Viewing Society has designated this a 2B (or 6B) video."

you should put some cross brace in between the deck trees to help keep the deck from moving too much with the wind. it could cause your deck to break up if you have too much movement.

Spiral staircase and a fire pole get my vote. Need a waterproof box up there, so you can store the bedding you need for an impromptu overnight-er.

For sure. Def need some sort of cedar chest for a blanket and some bug spray and a machete. Just because.

👏👏 Super cool platform! Good job! Too bad you forgot the good sleeping bag (I might need a transparent tent too 🙂). Seeing this, I wish I had the strength and means to do the same...I'd love that!... only maybe in a slightly less freezing region than yours, like, maybe in central Portugal, where land is dirt cheap at the moment and the temps are minimum -7 C. The only problem there is the extreme heat in the Summer and the danger of fires but if you've got some reserves and create a good prevention system when you move "in" , it's almost perfect....
There are lots of creeks, river beaches, wells, ponds and lakes to refresh in though, if you don't depend only on muscle force to do the summer harvest for you, so you actually get to have some leisure time...

Ryan - you are just TOO AWESOME for your YT!! Love this video even tho, as you began putting the floor down, it made me rather dizzy and nauseous LOL. You do such kewl work. I'd love to come out and spend time in this land of "Bizzare Buildings " Surviving Ringworms B & B... love it!! (would love to see you daily... even if it's just a 15 min. clip letting us know what is coming up for the long vid.) Be safe - looking forward to the next video!!!!

To be fair, in real life it makes a guy dizzy too! Especially at first when there are only loose planks to stand on. I probably looked like I was walking barefoot over Legos for the first hour or so.
      Ringworm B&B... Maybe a franchise?

Try some pepperJack cheese. It is very mild in heat and has a very goog flavor too it. Also try too use some none barked tree branchs too make a railing all around the deck.

What if you left the trees longer so that they would also serve as corners for your walls? You could have cut notches where the floor connects to the trees and still have corner supports up

I didn't think of ziplining to the bed! I just have a 50' cable I took off the four wheeler winch a few weeks back but not sure it's long enough for a 15' high zip line?

What great fun, as someone who does this (variation on a theme) for a living, it is quite enjoyable. My only wish is that you would use a sealer on all the end grain to help longevity- I know you say you don't care if it lasts, but gosh darn it, everyone else does.
    Thanks!

    • @survivingringworm2202

I totally hear ya. I actually wouldn't mind weather proofing the whole deck since the wood is so pretty but just don't have the $ to pay for "unnecessary" stuff like that.
Not that anything I make is necessary.

Hindsight is 20/20. If a guy would have left the 4 trees about 3 feet higher and notched the sides for the floor you would have supports on 4 corners for a railing of some type.
