Would have made it more interesting if the winner got something like a guaranteed bottom seed in the playoffs or default home court advantage in all playoff series
i sorta agree with the second option but not so much the first,, guaranteeing a bottom seed would most likely take away the competitiveness of that said team during the remainder of the season
Or maybe it can bump a teams seed placement up by 1, say if overall at the end of the season, a team places 7th the go to 6th seed and avoid the play-in....
Nah bro, its time to award thus guys more trophies and chance for trophies than only one. Like football(soccer) where they plays tons of leagues and championshios per year. American format of sport is amazing but its time they learn to have more leagues/cups, that makes the game more diversive and better. This gonna make some smallers and worst teams wanna play at their best at this tournment, and its a great incentige for players that think their teams doesnt have what it takes to be a champions

And it's 500k per player, more incentive for fhe younf players on small contracts to ball out. Basically make half you salary after taxes on a minimum deal.

Fun fact in English football we play for 3-4 domestic in-season cups! The league Title, the European Cup (Only in the premier League) ,The FA Cup & The English Cup (Top 3 Divisions of English only)

82 games regular season is boring, most people watch college basketball than nba regular season. With this new system, who don't want 500k dollars before Christmas? and more entertaining regular season? imagine you won NBA cup and NBA finals, it will be a grand slam.

Those sports must incorporate many different tournaments and races because single one on one games aren’t possible, or won’t garner the revenue needed. This is nothing more than a grab for fair weather fans that don’t understand winning. Those that don’t understand what is actually important.
Also, if an 82 game season is “boring” as you claim. Rebadging those same games won’t fix your boring issue. Restructuring the season could. Like begin after Jan 1. Go into summer. Avoid competing with football. You said more people watch college basketball? No, that’s actually not true. I’m not sure where you got that from. The ratings for their END OF SEASON TOURNAMENT gets good ratings. Any other IN SEASON tournament, does not.

This tournament makes no sense whatsoever.. The games count as regular season games, they are just playing regular games then, with the effect of winning another possible trophy that means absolutely nothing. A tournament has to be played outside of regular season games, that's how it works in every other sport on earth. It also involves clubs that aren't usually in the main league, so it would have made sense if the tournament involved for example clubs from the G-league, or whatever. I really don't see the point of this thing, other than more stats and more money for players.

I’m still confused, if these tournament games are supposed to be built into each teams regular season 82 game schedule, how does that work when you get to the round of 8 teams as you obviously don’t know which 8 teams it’s going to be so how can those games be already built into the schedule? Those would have to all be additional games right?
Yes they are additional games that don't count towards the regular season.

I think the key to rge success of this tournament is a contender to win the cup. If the finalists for this cup both are out of the play-ins after the regular season, this mini tournament will hold no value to teams or even players going forward

This is going to be somewhat entertaining. But it's going to be a little boring in a few years when teams would rather loose that stupid tournament if their players needed rest or rehab. It's not going to be a"play through injury" situation that the playoffs are after the 3rd or 4th year.

So if you do well for the in-season tournament games, then you’re rewarded even tougher regular season matchup(s) in Vegas?
Its just a way to generate additional fan interest in the early part of the season when things are otherwise dead. Im sure it will be a bit more meaningful than the NBA All Star game. There is also a financial incentive for the participants: "The team that wins the tournament will be crowned with the NBA Cup. Each player on the winning team will take home $500,000; players on the second-place team will get $200,000 each; players on losing semi-finals teams will get $100,000 each; and the quarterfinalists will earn $50,000 per player." Its certainly not necessary but it does add to an additional point of interest to the season. So for what its worth you will now have the start of the season, the tournament, the trade deadline, the All Star game and finally the NBA Playoffs followed by the draft in June.

As the NBA is clamoring to catch ratings like the NFL, stuff like this and the play-in are surfacing. If the NBA ran their season from Christmas to July, they’d avoid football overlap and get more ratings. Also, cut the season to 70 games and remove two teams from the playoffs. Only 6 get in per conference. These changes would surely increase the importance of regular season games, however the NBA would never cut out that many games, as each one is a revenue source. But a version of this would be much better than the mid season and play in tournaments, in my opinion.

and from the week after thanksgiving - til May is fine. And Mid July is Finals time that way. All year round people can watch sports without the Owners sacrificing that much profit either. ⚾️ April-October. 🏈 September-February. & 🏀December-July. That way the only dead month really is March and August. but NBA Allstar festivities would be in March and hopefully a 1v1 tournament. Winner gets a no-trade clause and $5mil or something.

It could even be a pay per view event like a fight night. The players would have an incentive to participate if the league put the cash on the line.

@@ExilixE that’s a good idea. Ever since the Ball brothers got into the league I suggested a 2v2 game of the Curry brothers vs Ball brothers. Something different for all star weekend at least. Incentivizing a win for any all star game is the key. Good idea.
If this tournament is going to be competitive and entertaining at all it’s gotta be worth more than some stupid new trophy nobody cares about. Should come with some type of advantage in the post season or something smh this just seems excessive.

Add incentives in NBA cup like they will get a a wild card spot in play in 9th vs 10th place (playoffs) incase the winner didn't manage to get standing requirement in playoffs. It will motivate all of the teams to win this single tournament.

How does the scheduling even work for this when you don't know who you will play in the middle of the tournament? Also how do the vegas games count towards your home/road games?

I like that the nba is trying to change things up and keep things exciting but there needs to be a bigger reward like a +3games to your win total giving you a cushion to assure you make playoffs. Something more valuable than a trophy that doesn’t mean anything.

They play the league, cups and the best teams plays either champions, or libertadores, titles that are played by the best teams against the best in continent. They also play supercups, where the previuos winner from the league and cup, or european and south america super cups, where like, the previous winner from continent title first and second league, and other titles with their national team, Player can win multiple titles in their carrer, and players from smaller teams have a chance to compete for more than one title, thats is a great great thing, the only one league in american sport system is the only thing that ruins american sport system, because you guys have and amazing format of leagues and etc

Rookie here. Can someone explain to me what the matches between pre-season and in-season are good for?
Preseason games - basically practices before the season to get a look at younger players and make final decisions for your roster before the real season starts
Regular season games - games that contribute to your win loss record which determines whether you make the playoffs to compete for a championship
In-season-tournament games - nobody really has a fucking clue because it’s the first year and kinda stupid so we’re all just kinda figuring out on the fly.

The regular season has 82 games - all of these games will count towards who gets to play in the final tournament for the championship - this tournament is called the playoffs.
The games of November will be both in-season tournament games and regular season games. Meaning if a team wins 10 games in November. All of those games will count in the in-season tournament AND count towards the total games at the end of the year which will determine the brackets of the final tournament for the NBA championship.
October - regular season games
November - in-season tournament games & reg. season games
December - in season semi finals / finals & reg. season games
Jan - April - regular season games
May - playoff tournament games
June - NBA Finals
no need for a in season tournament, just have less overall games so each game means more to contending for the ring. too many games is what is making people watch it less, its all meaningless till the end of the season. Look at Football, USA stops every Sunday cause there are only a few games and each game has purpose

I would say more like the FA cup of the premier league or like supercopa of the liga. Champions league is more if European and South American teams joined the nba’s elite teams to determine the winner

This could be good since bench players usually have lower salary therefore they’d have an incentive to play harder and win. But that also means the quality of basketball you’re getting is not as good. Doesn’t really make sense imo but we’ll see how it works

It’s worth a try but I think the results should have immediate implications of the final playoff picture. That will make the in-season tournament worth playing. Millionaire players would probably rather rest than make an extra 50-500K. Just my opinion.
