Motorhead, while not the biggest, was arguably the most influential band in metal music history and the singer Lemmy Kilmeister the original metal rock star legend personified. Many metal bands owe their success to Lemmy and Motörhead.

It really kills me when people continually talk about how much of an influence he was to metal... He was a huge influence in Punk as well, being a part of the dark side (if you will) of punk... Bands like the Misfits and those would've never happened without him.

    • @martinwhite3559
      @martinwhite3559 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes, I agree. He had a big influence on punk and rock music. Dave Grohl gave a speech at his funeral. They were very close. Metallica had a punk sound and attitude in their early days and this was partly due to the influence from Motorhead. Metallica had trouble with their indentity in the early days. They were too punk for the metal scene and too metal for the punk scene. They were also heavily influenced by the Misfits. I think a lot of 80s metal bands were influenced by punk in some way.

""Enter Sandman" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica. It is the opening track and lead single from their self-titled fifth album, released in 1991. The music was written by Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Hetfield wrote the lyrics, which deal with the concept of a child's nightmares." Wikipedia

Motorhead and Metallica were good friends and toured together a bit in the 80's, they'd cover each other in shows and sometimes jammed. Lemmy was a prolific song writer and wrote/co-wrote songs for other bands and artists in the late 80's and throughout the 90's, most notably Ozzy Osbourne (Hellraiser, Mama, I'm Comin' Home, Road To Nowhere and See You On The Other Side), an interesting cover they did was David Bowie's Heroes (also covered by the Wallflowers), he's got some pretty thought provoking lyrics depending on the song.

Lemmy is one of my personal heroes. Motorhead were legends, without them there'd be no Metallica. This is a cover, though. Metallica were the originals for Enter Sandman, which was Kirk Hammet's baby. Funnily enough, the song, the most popular song in metal, ever, one of the most popular songs of all time, is about CRIB DEATH, lol!
Please keep up with Motorhead, I highly recommend a song called One More Fucking Time for getting used to Lemmy's voice, or! If you want Lex to bounce you right off the couch, the LIVE version of Overkill. There's a live video, and it is SOMETHING.
Oh, and as for drinking a lot? Lemmy's doctor told him he had to quit, or he'd die. He switched from whiskey to vodka.

To answer your question about Lemmy and alcohol and drugs YES, he was often on amphetamine and once stated he had tried all drugs except heroin and morphine (he never injected anything) he also drank an entire bottle of Jack Daniel's a day.
In May 1975 he was arrested crossing the US/ Canadian border carrying amphetamine but was later released without charge, which led to him being kicked from a band called hawkwind he went on to form a band called bastard but was told it wouldn't get aired on TV with that name, so he changed it to Motörhead and that's how we ended up with my all-time favourite band. I was lucky enough to see them play live in Leeds, it was an amazing night, it took my ears a few days to recover though.

Never knew they covered it but while it sounds good and Motorhead is one of my favourite bands I'm not much of a fan of covers that sound note for note the same as the original. I like when they change it up and make it their own, like Tori Amos's Raining Blood.

Lemmy in Motorhead was a great songwriter. You should listen to some Motorhead originals like Orgasmatron, I'm So Bad (Baby I Don't Care), In the Name of Tragedy, Back at the Funny Farm. They're known for Ace of Spades, Overkill, but there are lots of great Motorhead songs. Lots. Venture off the ranch.

it takes a few seconds to quickly google something. you would then know it was a Metallica song. as your 1st Motorhead song, its an odd choice. they have a ton of songs, original ones, that heavily influenced many bands, such as Metallica. try "ace of spades"

"Drank a whole load of liquor". That's not the half of it.. Lemmy was reputed to drink a bottle of Jack Daniels a day. His particular favourite was a JD and cola, and this only changed to JD and orange when he was diagnosed as being diabetic. In fact, after Lemmy passed away, there were calls for the mix of "JD and cola" to be renamed as "A Lemmy", he was that synonymous with that mix.
As for the music.. Metallica did the original of this one, but Motorhead added their brand of punchy grit to their version, and it works well. Lemmy did a number of cover versions of songs.. "Heroes", "Run run Rudolph" and "Good golly Miss Molly" spring to mind.

Metallica is releasing an album called Blacklist on September 10th. They have 53 artists covering all of the songs off the black album, which is where the original Enter Sandman was first relesed. There will be 7 different versions of Enter Sandman on that album.

Well "Enter Sandman" was a folk song back in 1800's which was then sampled in 1969 by Simon and Garfunkel renaming it "Welcome Dream Maker" (unreleased). Which was then sampled by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and renamed it "Enter Dreamman" but the single was destroyed before it's release by a disgruntled drummer from Sweden. The notes were saved by an, at the time young bassist Ron McGovney. He was about to form a band with this version till Lemmy Kilmister in a drunken ramble bought the rights to the song renamed it back "Enter Sandman" and then later made popular by Metallica as a cover. Your welcome.

Metallica were heavily influenced by Motorhead, and they became good friends. Metallica had covered Motorhead songs for Lemmy's birthday, originally, so it's only fitting Motorhead cover Metallica back.
Yes, the prayer is in the original Metallica version.
Side note, Lemmy always called James "Jimmy Hetfield," and was probably the only person ever that could do that. Lol.
Great reaction to a good cover. 🤘🏻

Brad & Lex this is a Metallica cover.. Other Metallica covers I found pretty cool were Trivium - Master of Puppets, Stone Sour - Creeping Death, Volbeat - Don't Tread on Me and Miley Cyrus (Blacklist) - Nothing Else Matters. It pays to listen to the original first before checking out the covers. This way you get a feel of the artistic take of each cover in how these guys put their own groove into a Metallica Classic..
