I was around at that time. Let me put it into perspective: Pentium processors did not exist. To successfully write a song we combined several PC's hahaha. So you had a sampler and a 303 if you could spend the bucks. 16mb sample memory. Kick and bass were ONE channel a lot of times, you did this by sequencing envelopes in MIDI CC. It was kinda wild.

Young folks did really used only pc as I understand. But with money old second hand or even third hand synths wear used. So low pass filter was mostly only filter in goa trance. Also rack synths and pc as sequencer was very common way to make trance. Ones that didn't get TB 303 used novation bass station mk1 etc. Also with only Roland SH-101 was used to make full goa track. Thas what I have read about goa trance history.

I love how the younger generation considers the modern form of psy as 'regular' trance. :) Once upon a time there was only acid trance and then Goa was born. I'm 46, was here for it all the first time, and so glad to see the current resurgence of interest in the classic Goa style. I love both sides of the coin, but my heart will always be in Goa. Your tutorials are very well explained and easy to follow; much appreciated! Oh, and my personal taste requires a tambourine to be in the drum kit for it to be consider 'true' Goa trance. :) *runs and hides from the millennial stampede* :)

There is a magic with Goa Trance that I am so glad I was there at the beginning.
From Acid trance to Goa Trance I am vey grateful for having been part of the movement & watching it change.
Maybe we danced together in Goa partys??

it is already making a comeback. goa trance is now more popular than ever before (if you discount the golden years 97 plus minus one year). the amount of goa releases is increasing every year since 2002 and there have been more newschool goa releases than oldschool ones for quite some time now. if you've missed it up to now you've got a treasure trove of good music to discover.

      @@tru7hhimself So true man!
In Israel where I'm from, new school Goa is booming with lots of parties playing specifically Goa trance (also retro sets)
There are many new acts such as "Psykorhythm" for example, who are killing every dancefloor around the country this year (2021).
There are so many good Goa music the past years.
I highly recommend the album "Cosmic waves by Atlantis". U can find it on TH-cam. Absolutely brilliant!! 🕉️

Goa baselines, and the genre itself, evolved from traditional EBM. In very early tracks to around '94 you can REALLY hear this, before the stabby/bouncy drone started to dominate.
At some point this was simplified from running 16th note EBM style basslines to the simple one note rolling that's common now.

interesting finding this video as I spent a lot of time working in studios making Goa back in the 90's...
It's worth noting that the limitations of the time drove us into having to be innovative and creative and the lack of any internet meant that this knowledge was highly revered and just as sought after as the gear is today..
There were a number of techniques that were used to maximise the gear limitations and the biggest one of these was the hardware sampler which was an absolute games changer for many and was the source for drums on 90% of records of the time.. even then, 909s were too expensive so most people would put the money towards an Akai S1000 or similar.
Outboard and mixers were another essential tool and were used in a far more dynamic way, rather like an instrument in itself... many of the sounds such as kicks and snares were layered up through the desk, then compressed and gated to achieve the tightness of sound and then resampled back for use in the track's final mix to DAT..
All of these techniques were based on what you heard, as visual feedback was obviously limited, but there is a lot to be said for this approach as it connects you in a more visceral way with the music you are creating..
There is a lot to be said for working within limitations... when problems have easy "one-click" solutions, you often miss the opportunity to find a more creative and musically appealing solution

I actually grew up and lived through the 90's, computers back then were pretty limited, most PCs were anything from an old 286 to a 486 running Windows 3.11, or Windows 95, or in the late 90's they were Pentium II, Pentium III, or Pentium IV, running Windows 98 or Windows XP, there were Macs running OS7, OS 8, and OS 9, the main Daws used in the 90's were early versions of Cubase, ProTracker, and Impulse Tracker, there was also an open source Daw called Jeskola Buzz too, which was a free download, most computers in the 90's were limited in how much memory they had too, maximum would be about 2Gb of DDR Ram, 286, 386, and 486 PCs used slower ram, also graphics cards were limited too.

I usually let the tail of my kick end sit 1 semitone lower than the key of the bass, that usually accentuates the roll of the bass and makes the kick and bass just sit better when played together :)

    Hi Dash.. New subscriber here.!!
You are in a topic that information is very minor.. I always liked Goa Trance, my personal favorite, compared to Psy.. ( due to more melodic stuff )
There is a long time i 'm searching about any tutorials and ideas specific to this genre and i have to say that you are one of few persons that touched this topic, so far..
I think that this will be a great video series and will give all of us a point to start..
I admire all of these melodic lines in Goa Trance that work in parallel and contribute to each other, so the result is magical and mystic..
But this is my main problem, to combine some tracks so they will work together..
I think that if you could create a video dedicated to Goa melodies and give us some basic elements ( how to create them in terms of midi notes - i think Goa use Eastern Scales ) and arrangement, it would be great!!!
I watched your video number 2 about Phoscyon acid lead lines, and i have to say that this was great ( especially the tip about midi export ) and i have my 1st Goa - ish midi track.. :)
Are there any other easy tips about arpegiators, techniques and other stuff we can use to create melodic stuff?
Thanks again for the time you spend here and give your knowledge to us!! :D

Hi Dash, excellent tutorial once again :) I'm very new to hardware synths so please bear with me. I just a couple of questions if you don't mind. I am trying to create a classic Goa bassline with a Behringer MS-1. You added a bit of unison to the saw wave in your bass, would adding a bit of pulse width to my bass have a similar effect? Also, you removed the high frequencies with an EQ, would you still remove the really low frequencies as you normally would? Appreciate your advice. Cheers!!

Hey Dash! Thanks for the video, just one thing. It's very very rare those Goa Music using the classic psytrance bassline, they in fact, use a lot of a melody bass, but not like full on, something more "agressive".
    Here some examples:
    Doof - Double Dragons
Green Nuns of the revolution - Ring of Fire
I think this is esencial to a real Goa trance track, the melody agressive bass.
I would like to understand more about those basses, thank you and keep up the serie ❤️

    • @DashGlitch
      @DashGlitch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep sure, I did definitely mention this factor in the video but i was trying to focus on the sound rather than the progression, it's important for sure - I did put in a melody on the bass that comes after the kick rolls and mentioned that the progression is important and I will cover it in a future episode :)

i think you're overdoing it with the kick. layering kicks wasn't that big of a thing as it is now. whenever in doubt and you want to go really oldschool use a 909 ;-). often when trying to emulate / analyse my favourite oldschool goa sounds (be it basslines or leads) i start out thinking too complicated and then realise that it's just one single layer with a clever patch and engaging midi pattern.

    • @DashGlitch
      @DashGlitch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I might be wrong but the 909 in fact uses several layers in the schematic which then get mixed, one is generating the boom and the other the click, pretty much how I’ve explained here
