Here's how to not have to wait two years. Plant carrot tops in the ground after you used them in a dish. The top is already mature, so it'll re-root, flower, and produce seed that same year.

When you save your own seed, the germination rates are fantastic which makes you wonder how old the seed is that you buy in the shops. It's great to save your own seed when you can.

I saved carrot seeds during the early summer this year and then planted them in August. They germinated almost a week quicker than my store brought seed. It was a long process especially cleaning them but you get so much more seed.

Finally! I made it through my first season of 2 years waiting for my carrots to go to seed. They kind of look like my Dill plants that I already collected a few days ago. Your carrot seeds kind of look like dill seeds with spike thingys. Okay, got it. Right now I'm still in flowering umbel stage. There are little teenie tiny wasp pair that's been admiring them lately.

This is timely. A few of my carrots and all my parsley bolted in year one. We had a warm then cold stretch in the spring and I think it tricked them into thinking its year two. I have my seed heads ready to go.

And I simply let the carrots grow to see what they would do. And there was a point where I couldn't weed them do to life and when I got in there to weed they had started to produce flowers. In the next months several of the carrots that I hadn't harvested yet where blooming. The flowers brought so many pollinators and they are beautiful.

I planted your rainbow blend along with several other kinds of carrots and i have several different varieties and colors in bloom and i am super excited to see what the seeds grow in to next year. I was hoping to save seeds from several different plants this year. I planed on leaving the carrots in tell the end of the season and maybe replanting them next spring to get seeds. However it looks like I will be planting the seeds of this last year next year. Maybe carrots aren't biannuals, maybe they just need to be planted in spring and then left all year? What an incredible world God made.

Although first, I will have to wait three weeks, and then clear the offered Plot of two years worth of growth and weeds, due to the previous Tennent doing nothing with the plot for that long lol, so it will probably be spring time before I can fully start gardening properly... But Hey-Ho and away I go =D (HAHA and just as I was typing this, I have been offered the viewing of another Allotment Plot on another site...so maybe I might be planting this year after all !!! ... fingers crossed =DDD)

OK, we eat our carrots and take the tops and replant them around our fruit trees and buildings, so they are out of the way. The tops grow and go to seed and you still get to eat the carrot and don't have to wait two whole years for the flower. Make sure your carrot spent some time in the fridge so it thinks a winter has past. Don't start in water and move to dirt, just lay the top down on your dirt and sprinkle some mulch over it and water. Carrots hate, hate, hate, being moved and tend to lose all their tops everytime. We started our tops this spring, also a bunch of rainbows. We used organic rainbows and the cheap regular non organic orange ones. Even with no green on them, it grows back. Only needs 1/2 inch of actual carrot to be a root. Have dozens of flowers that are seeded now, in late summer. Just a few months, start to finish. Here to see how to save these seeds. Thanks Luke! We watch so many of your videos. You've taught us a lot

I didn't know they were biannual. I typically plant twice as much, so I can harvest a fresh batch in the spring (Northern Ontario here). One time I decided to let a few continue to grow and they began to rott? So idk what happened, but it wasn't going to flower.

Some of my carrots have gone to seed but I’m pretty sure they are ones I planted this spring.
Will the seeds be viable, do you think?

  • @Chicomite
    @Chicomite 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So I got carrot seeds months ago and my mom swiped them and planted them without thinking about rows or how many seeds go in each hole (pretty much threw the seed down willy nilly). Long story short, one was quite bigger than the others so i let him grow longer to see how big it could get. Now, I have the most insanely huge carrot growing in my planter and it's just started to flower in the past week. Isn't that pretty fast to have them flower already? It is a super carrot.
So do I leave the flowers on until they start drying up, right? Otherwise I would have to dry them out in a box like u said with more bugs attracted to that.

I am currently living in the high Andes of Ecuador and have planted "White Carrots" (Zanhorrias Blancas in Ecuador and "Arracocha" in Brazil and other parts of South America). This is a native root that is native to the Andes and is related to carrots, celery, and parsnips.j
I will be planting Chantenay red cored 2 and Berlicum 2, both from seed, right across the path from the Blancas. I am excited to discover what I will get if they cross pollinate. I envision something looking like a "50-50" Ice Cream bar; Orange on the outside and white on the inside. This will be fun.

    • @renatehaeckler9843
      @renatehaeckler9843 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You don't want the one that bloom the first year's seeds because the resulting plants will be more likely to bolt the first year too, and that means they're not making carrots, they're making flower stalks. Even better is to either dig all your carrots, taste a little bit from the bottom tip and save out the ones that taste the best, replant them in the spring and let only those go to seed so you'll get sweet, good tasting carrots, or leave them all in the ground so the kind that can last through the winter are the ones that make seeds (if you want to store your winter carrots in the ground). You can take up to 1/3 of the root to taste and the rest will still grow new roots and the flower stalk and make seeds. Professional carrot seed growers (the good ones) taste every carrot and keep them in storage through winter and replant in the spring.

No, it's not true. Carrots are related to celery, celery root (celeriac), fennel, parsnips, and lots of herbs used for their foliage and/or seeds, including angelica, anise, caraway, coriander, cumin, chervil, cilantro, dill, lovage, and parsley. All of their leaves are light and feathery, esp dill, coriander(cilantro).
Cabbage is a brassica related to brocolli , cauliflower, bok choi, Chard, Spinach(?), Brussels sprouts, rocket etc. Big leafy greens

Anyone know what the little bugs are and if they hurt the seeds?

Could you replant the damp seed head that's left over?

Would be great to take out in the country on some ole dirt roads & plant some so that some day ppl that are walking along can find them. I take wild flowers & plant them along the country roads.. Kinda nice to see the next year how they do. :)

      That is so awesome!
I went to a gardening conference about the harmful effects of glyphosate residue, but they also had a class on making 'seed bombs'...soil/clay mixture with flower seeds inside of them. Just throw them down in sunny locations and the rain will help them to eventually grow.
It is great that you are helping nature!

Mother nature always sets extra seeds , she is abundant and divine :-)
I love coldoranges, best snack in the world. But only organic ones.... the nonorganic ones contain up to 32 pesticides and are among the 'dirty dozen' of fruits polluted.
But get organic, then best snack I know... nothing comes even close
They get better when cooled in refridgerator box
And it's perfect for late night snack, or morning snack

I saved some this year in a similar way, but was worried about cross pollination with similar looking "weeds"

I have heard of that happening, but it honestly very unlikely.

@@MIgardener I have a TON of queen Anne's lace growing on my property...I was worried about that too but my carrots never seeded...just rotted in the soil 🤷🏻‍♀️ I've been trying for two years. The last one I dug up after the foliage died looked like a little dried orange web. That's all that was left.

But I grow carrots in the same year and save the seed in that year
And I sow the seed to see how it will grow
But the seed I saved from my carrot 🥕 is growing well
I can't wait to see my first carrot

so if you plant carrots, and leave them for 2 years they seed. Then pull and plant new? or leave them and in another 2 years have more seeds?

Year 1: Purchase carrot seeds, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot.
Year 2: Purchase carrot seeds, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot
Also watch for Year 1 carrots to return; let them flower and go to seed -- harvest seeds from Year 1 carrots.
Year 3: Plant carrot seeds harvested in Year 2, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot. Also watch for Year 2 carrots to return; let them flower and go to seed -- harvest seeds from Year 2 carrots.
Year 4: Plant carrot seeds harvested in Year 3, grow carrots, harvest & eat carrots, but leave 4-5 carrots in ground/repot. Also watch for Year 3 carrots to return; let them flower and go to seed -- harvest seeds from Year 3 carrots.
      Etc....
