    Finally did a video explaining why Gabriel and these cheetahs LOVE grooming so much, me, themselves and others. A single answer is not encompassing enough, but entails many facets as to why. It basically comes down to a survival behavior that is instinctive and pleasurable so they will do it. Gabriel and some of these cheetahs can groom and purr for up to 15 minutes and I allow it so I can bond physically and socially to enrich their lives and bond with them so I can examine them him without sedation.

    In the video I misspelled "Flehmen" Response (a smell and taste reaction due to the Jacobson's Organ in a cats mouth). Near the end, spelled it Phlegmon which is an inflammation of tissue. NO! Several people have asked WHY DO THESE CHEETAHS GROOM YOU SO MUCH? So I decided to answer. It's interesting for sure. Cheetahs lick and groom more than any cat species I have encountered so far. Allowing them to groom bonds you to these captive cats physically and emotionally. I make sure I have zero salves or anything on me to insure there are no chemicals transferred to them. No Sun Block! Mild soap when washing before greeting them.

    Dolph - I agree completely. I like how you mentioned that our pets feel like grooming to cats. Cats like being pet at places they can’t groom themselves: behind the ears; under the chin; on top of the head; etc.
    Your cheetahs clearly enjoy hanging out with you, but they might not if you didn’t let them groom you. It’s painful, but when in Rome! It’s a good thing you let your beard grow out! It’s basically a job requirement!
    I really enjoy your educational videos. You are a realist. Your cheetah friends like you because you understand them and you are nice to them. I bet they consider you to be nice part of the family, so, they want to make sure you are nice and clean to help you mask your scent when you go out to run down a gazelle 😉. True, they’ve never SEEN you run down a gazelle, but you bring back meat, so you MUST have (who knows what they truly think?).

      Yup! Thx for the comment. For sure these cats 🐈 see our hands and fingers like their tongue grooming. And yes you be nice to anything, eventually they might come around to do the same. It's wonderful for another animal to value you.

    Our housecat does the same thing and he especially likes grooming my beard as I hold him in my arms. He also purrs and half closes his eyes when he does it like these cheetahs. I always figured he grooms me as a show of affection because we are friends and he likes me, since he also gets visibly excited when he sees me after I've been away for a few hours. His tongue is like a tiny hair brush and it feels really nice when he combs my facial hair with it.

      Cheetahs are very sociable animals. To say they would make great pets is an exaggeration, but with the exception of normal housecats, no other feline is as docile as a cheetah. It’s almost doglike in its behavior. Unlike almost every other feline, it is passively aggressive. If seen in the wilderness, there are practically no circumstances in which a cheetah would be a threat to a human. It doesn’t see them as a possible prey. It would either ignore you or run, and if it did approach you, it would do so out of curiosity. It’s such a beautiful, almost perfect animal.

    I have two Savannah cats, and one is quite skittish but the other is my cat soulmate ❤ She has huge claws but knows that being too rough hurts me, and is a grooming machine if I let her. I can attest to the damage that tongue can do, as I was accidentally licked on the eye a few years ago. It never got infected, but my cornea is scarred and the vision is very fuzzy. I don't fault her at all, she was just trying to lick my forehead from above😆😆

    this behaviour might be puzzling for many cultures, but it's more like parents kissing their kids on the cheeks, or how the southern half of Europe kiss eachother on the cheeks when greetings, Arabs do it too but with more reservations (men and women aren't allowed to kiss eachother on the cheeks unless it's a mother-son, or father-daughter) etc... for us, Cheetahs are just doing the cat version of that behaviour.
    also, when I had a cat, I taught him to kiss me on the cheek instead of licking me, he was a smart boy and once I started kissing him on the cheeks, he copied me and quit licking people.
    most cats are introverts, but if you socialize them, they will pick up on your social habits and be warm towards you.

    I wonder if the large cats that are more like dogs/housecats around humans (servals, chetahs, caracals, etc), are like that because of the empathy gradient. Maybe they simply evolved to have more of it. So they are more nuanced with their predatory behavior vs social behavior. Rather than a lion, where one mistake and it will kill you.
    You can say the same with whales, dolphins etc. They dont kill people (accidents aside) and actively seek them out for help. Their consciousness is just more evolved in empathy and because of that social behavior/nuances. Also brings the Serval conflict resolution ritual to mind.

    When I was 15 we moved out to a small farm, and started raising our own beef. We never trained any of our cows to lead or anything, but my dad liked to socialize with our first heifer. She'd groom him while he scratched her. And yep, it was on his beard, but much more often on his head. He'd come back inside with the hair on one side sticking straight up. Too funny. At least cow tongues aren't rough!

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@monicapdx Amazingly, ungulates and cats adapted to the same rough tongues, but for different reasons. A cheetah needs it to lick cow meat off bones and comb fur while cows use the sandpaper tongue to grip vegetation. Giraffes have terrible stony tongues that helps them grip tree libs. Young ones are softer tongues as they are not fully developed. Helps prevent cutting the nibbles when nursing.

    • @monicapdx
      @monicapdx 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@CheetahWhisperer This is one of the reasons I love your channel. I always learn even more when I comment. 😁 Interesting on cow tongues. I knew they had no upper incisors, and that they wrap their tongues around grass to hold it against the cutting edge of the lower incisors. Had no idea about roughness, which certainly would help with the grip. Lots of graze isn't all that delicate, either. I guess I didn't personally get licked too much. I was usually only feeding some salt or a handful of oats. I did enjoy that Black Angus have black tongues. Very interesting about giraffes, too. New info to me, but considering what they eat, it seems obvious once you know it. 😄
      Now you've got me wondering about donkeys and horses, who both have softer tongues. Our family having had both, though, I know well that donkeys can eat far rougher vegetation than horses. However, my first horse, like our donkeys, would happily eat thistles. He was some indeterminate mix, but you could tell he had a lot of pony blood. (He'd get nearly a 4' coat in winter, and shed enough of it in spring to almost make a real horsehair mattress.) I aways wondered if that contributed to his enjoyment of something as rough as thistles. Ponies usually developed in marginal territory and eat a lot like donkeys if they have to. He was a tad more careful than the donkeys, but grazed about the same amount of them. Even the big, mature ones. My second horse was a purebred, fancy breed, and he wouldn't dream of putting his delicate nose near thistles. He was thin-skinned, too. I wasn't surprised at him having a much finer coat than my first horse, but I didn't think of the connection to thickness of skin until I accidentally rode him through a big patch of nettles. Pepper, my first, ignored nettles. Poor Brig started dancing around in pain. I got him out of them fast, dismounted to check, and he was covered in big, visible welts. From only a few feet into the patch! Luckily there was a creek on the property so I could apply mud right away. Poor boy. I felt terribly guilty.

    Question: are the "lashes" of a cat lashes like humans or an extension of fur over their eyes. I've had cats all my life (domestic house cats) but never paid attention to this. We know the reason for the lashes but since an issue about this arose recently it made me wonder. • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah...as humans it's weird to lick so much, but think of the similarity of us humans chatting or talking 👄 so much to each other all the time. It's our human nature. To a cheetah 🐆 it's dumb and dangerous. Your announcing yourself to danger! Be quiet 🤫!
      A cheetah or predators are very quiet... rarely speak or make noises so nothing can detect them. They walk silently. They call when necessary, like for cubs or a mate. Their purrs are barely audible unless close.
      A cheetah licks and grooms a lot to maintain tidyness. Addicted to it and helps hide you and them from predators and prey and it's enjoyable to them. It's why I let them get their fill until they walk away and done. They love you for it. House cats too.

      @CheetahWhisperer  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I've seen leopards do this kneeding and suckling thing on the staff that raised it. Right on the person's back. It was to pacify itself and knew there was no milk. It enjoyed it.
      Wild mother cats stop the behavior or the cub would keep doing it. They run out-of milk and ready to mate again after ridding themselves of their cubs that are grown up.
      We humans allow the child/cub behavior to continue. I think it's both cute and serves a bonding purpose for captive animals that makes them safer to help and work with.
