      He had enough information by this time to give Boris his book back and confirm that it works. The Devil was on his arse from the moment he took it!

      Anita Neal Yes! And do you know why Dean Corso is using a Montblanc Agatha Christie ballpoint limited edition (with the silver snake clip)?

      mathieu Aubin I suppose because he was an agent of Lucifer all along. I noticed that he is in the book as the praying Monk about to get bludgeoned.

      Anita Neal When he is at the baroness library yes, but not at this public library. The pen cost like 1000us$, I don't understand why Corso has buy it...

    This is a great scene. I love the comparison of the dictionary with the Ninth Gate.
    This movie was not made that long ago, but it sure feels like I'm living in a different world. I say this because people my age nowadays don't lug around dictionaries with them.
    I collect unabridged dictionaries. The oldest one I own is from 1864. It's a significant edition for Merriam-Webster, because that was the year that illustrations first appeared in the dictionary; the dictionary has a content section devoted to descriptive and elaborate hand drawn illustrations. Historically, the separate content section devoted to illustrations ended around the year of 1944.
    Illustrations can of course still be found in modern dictionaries, only, you have to fan through each page to find one, and it will be generic, unless you own an Encyclopedic Edition. A fantastic modern one is "Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedic Edition" from 1977.

    The music in this film perfectly captures the tone of the movie.
    It creates a sense of 'old' dread and forboding...
    The ninth gate is second only to night of the demon as my favourite horror movie!

    I really dig the following Roman Polanski pictures: Chinatown, Frantic, and particularly The Ninth Gate. For some reason I find them incredibly immersive. There's a hauntingly solitary feeling in the atmosphere in these films, which is a great mechanism for telling mystery/suspense-style detective stories. Another picture that comes to mind for me, in a similar vein, is "Vertigo" by Alfred Hitchcock.

    The way he parts the books on the shelf with a devil horns gesture, then seals the book back on it's shelf by modifying and transforming the gesture with the movement of his middle finger and ring finger are very interesting, as well as him tracing his fingers along the books before anointing the bookshelf by grazing it's batten, and then finally tapping the book he wants to 'open' before choosing it are all very superstitious, or ritual-like. The fact that he does this all right before he sees Green Eyes is almost subliminally suggesting that the book's written contents - that the audience never sees or hears about - are propelling him to act in a ritualistic manner in order to open the ninth gate. Each progression of scenes in the story are moments in the book that Corso chooses to subconsciously re-enact. Green Eyes being the familiar that guides Corso to his destination.
    With that said, Johnny Depp is basically playing Stephen Strange in this.

      Wouldn’t be surprised if this is just an error in production: the prop Depp used here may not be the carefully designed copy for close-ups where the pages and illustrations are going to be under closer scrutiny. Even if intended to be different (which they absolutely are) the version that mimics the woman’s face is definitely a separate prop.

      Its an error.

    • @TheSickDistrict
      @TheSickDistrict 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's an error. The engravings from the first part of the scene (the big catalog book being compared with the ninth gates) are from the original design of Reverte's El Club Dumas book i0.wp.com/cosmoversus.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/nov_puerta_lam9.jpg?w=249&ssl=1 made by the Spanish artist Francisco Solé. Polanski commissioned Solé to redo the engravings with slight changes (the girl and the castle along many more changes) for the movie.

    At 0:46 appears in the library the girl and she disappear immediately; she does the same few seconds after; I guess "she" is a Succubus. See the sex scene from the end.

    Just like I have never particularly liked Bruce Willis, so I have never been engaged in Johny Depp. But to play Corso is like to play Deckard in Blade Runner, Neo in the Matrix or Hallenbeck in The Last Boy Scout. In fact, The Last Boy Scout is the only movie I like starring Willis - his other movies are not bad but seem fading in comparison to play Hallenbeck. This movie is just amazing, absolutely cool from the first second to the very last, very intelectually stimulating, and just cool regarding acting, scenario and a creative aspect. A fun fact - "Lucifer", which means "to bring the light", is not mentioned throughout the Bible in any way whatsoever, period. Even Isaiah 14, which says about "a star falling from heaven", is not about "Lucifer"; because such name is just not mentioned there. Apart from that, Isaiah 14 is not a messianic prophecy, nor an eschatological prophecy - Isaiah 14 is about The Kingdom Of Babylon which was sent by God to punish 12 tribes of Israel for ignorance and idolatry - it is the prophecy which has been already fullfilled and is tied to Ester 14 - Enslavement of 12 tribes of Israel. "Lucifer" was never mentioned in the Bible, period. A fun fact: "The Christ, who is Maššiách in hebrew", does not mean "Saviour" but "The Annointed" because Maššiách is the King and The Priest according to a messianic psalm 110. Moreover, The Christ is called "The Light" or "The Star" in a messianic prophecy Numeri 24, 15 - 19 (a prophet Balam), a messianic prophecy Isaiah 9, 1 and Revelation 22, 16. Thus, a name "Lucifer" means literally "The Christ, Maššiách - The king and the priest", who is the Light/Star bringing the light to the world, but is not named as "Lucifer" but "The Christ/Maššiách". Perhaps Polanski had not even had idea what he has created - but a result has been just splendid - and on many levels. This is one of the best movies ever done, period.

    • @thibaulta.6167
      @thibaulta.6167 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great details here. Polanski knew perfectly what he was creating alongside J.Brownjohn and Urbizu. This movie is a masterpiece with A LOT of symbolism in it. But it requires to completely delve into it to fully get the true message it conveys imho. The answers are in the engravings and the parallels you can draw between these, Corso and Balkan.
