      I know a lot actually. 7 championships, 76 wins, 1 Daytona 500, 3 Southern 500s, 1 brickyard 3 Coke 600s. JJ has 7 championships 83 wins, 2 daytona 500s, 4 brickyards, 4 coke 600s and 2 Southern 500s. And did all that in less time and less starts then Dale Sr. You can also make an argument that Gordon is better than Dale Sr. as well.

    If Dale's 92 season had been like 90-91 and 93-94, he'd have had 5 in a row and 8 total. So Jimmy's accomplishment ( while still impressive ), doesn't mean he's better. It just means he had better luck. Petty won a lot, but in his era, the cars weren't as equal. He only won because of his equipment. If he'd ran in during Dale's or Jimmy's era, he'd have fared a lot worse. My top list, based on stats filtered through era and factoring in overall talent, would be Dale Earnhardt, Jimmy Johnson, and Jeff Gordon. Petty would be 4th.

  • @MyKittyPercy
    @MyKittyPercy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    To win a race, you have to be good that day. To win a championship, you have to be good all year (at least once upon a time). Dale Earnhardt is a 7-time champion and 48 points from being a 9-time champion. He has a better average finish than Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson because he was consistent. At his peak (1986-1991) NASCAR only ran 29 races a year so who knows how many wins he would have if they ran 36. In my opinion, he is definitely in the top 3 and in the conversation for number 1.

    • @24fan19
      @24fan19 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah true. Until 2004. Then that all changed with the chase and the playoffs. No longer does a driver and team have to be the best all year. If that were the case, Harvick and Gordon would both have more championships than they do. But it's not, and they don't.

    Here's a fun group of stats for you:
    Dale Earnhardt's rookie season was 1979. He raced against Richard Petty from 1979 until Petty retired in 1992. In that span, Petty won 1 championship (in 1979), Dale won 5. In that span, Richard won 15 races, Dale won 53.
    Jeff Gordon's rookie season was 1993. He raced against Dale Earnahrdt from 1993 until Earnahrdt died in 2001. In that span (not counting the 2001 season), Jeff won 3 championships, Dale won 2. In that span, Dale won 23 races, Jeff won 52 races.
    Jimmie Johnson's rookie season was 2002. He raced against Jeff Gordon from 2002 until Jeff retired in 2015 (I won't count the couple races Jeff subbed in 2016 for Dale Jr.). In that span, Jeff won 0 championships, Jimmie won 6. Jeff won 35 races, Jimmie won 76.
    My numbers might be slightly off, but I think it's reasonable to look at those numbers, consider when drivers were at their prime, and deduce that at it's not unreasonable to say Richard Petty isn't the greatest of all time. I think it can widely be agreed upon that Gordon, Johnson, Earnhardt, and Petty deserve to be in the top 5, but Earnhardt seems to be the only one in the group that put up a good fight against the next greatest drive to come along. Petty didn't stand a chance against Earnhardt. Petty is the only one of those 4 (Johnson yet to been seen) that spent the last decade or so of his career just logging laps. Gordon won in his 4th to last race, Earnhardt won a few races before his last and was likely going to finish top 5 in the Daytona 500 he was killed in. Also, a fun note is that Petty's last championship came the year before Earnhardt's first, Earnhardt's last came the year before Gordon's first. I could ramble on for way too long about stats, but Johnson fan or not, Jimmie deserves to be in the top 3. I'd honestly rank it as Earnhardt, Johnson, Gordon, Petty (and I'm a life-long Gordon fan). Sounds like Pearson put a whooping on Petty, too, but he shoulda stuck around longer if he wanted to be in a more serious conversation about greatest of all time.

      @ryanderke8678 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kyle Wagoner I agree about 95% with you, considering each driver that. Came along ended the dominance of the other, I have JJ first and I feel 2007 was the year as far as a driver standpoint he passed Gordon when they went head to head and JJ dominated the remaining 5 races on the schedule. Winning 4 of them in a row.
      Although Brad contradicts himself, in an Interview he said JJ was the best all around race car driver the sport has ever seen, yet on here now he ranks him 6th.

      I agree with you breakdown well done. I think it’s also interesting that if NASCAR didn’t go gimmicky and used it’s old points system Gordon would of got to 7 like Richard and Dale like the pass in of the torch between eras. Jimmie I think would have 3 or 4 which is solid but not the 7 he got with the help of the chase formatting which is biased towards the 10 tracks in it.

    • @nathanfaith8973
      @nathanfaith8973 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I rank Dale slightly above Gordon, Johnson and Petty, in no particular order. With that said the "what if" of the Chase isn't too accurate. Johnson and Knaus had it figured out. There was no need to rack up top 5 finishes, due to the points starting over after 26 races. They always won early, racked up a big point cusion and then they always had this slump (aka glorified test session) around mid-season, yet turned it back up right before the chase started. Knaus even alluded to this, somewhere mid-2008 i believe. It was clear they were playing the system perfectly. Had it been a straight 36 races, there wouldn't have been an opportunity for the slump/test session they had every summer. Just because Gordon would have had the most because that's what it says, doesn't mean that's the case, due to the approach the 48 team took every year, with the exception of 2016. If you go back and look, people always asked if "this is the year somebody beats the 48" due to them falling off during the summer. I'm not a fan AT ALL of Jimmie, but you have to respect how they played the system and in my opinion, can't take away titles from him, or add titles to Jeff's resume. How you approach the Chase system is not how you approach a straight 36 race season.

    • @phillipivey4833
      @phillipivey4833 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No he won a lot by being in the best equipment. Johnson is the only driver on that list that can say year after year he was driving the best equipment in the sport. The number of drivers that have won titles with Rick Hendrick proves that. Gordon, Elliot, Larson, Johnson, Labonte. No other team has produced that many champions in the sports history. From 1995 to 2022 Hendrick drivers have won 14 of the 27 cup championships. Imagine what Earnhardt would have done in that equipment. To put that in perspective now... Earnhardt had a better run than the Hendrick organization. From 1986 to 1994 Earnhardt won 6 of his cup titles. It took Rick Hendrick equipment to unseat his dominance. The multi-team approach and sharing information.

      Well you can argue it. At the time he was only car with a ton of money behind it with a complete team and he ran up to 5-6 races a week and winning lots of them cause of smaller fields and little towns drivers nit being able to compete with a car with all that money behind it. Pearson only ran 1 maybe 2 races at the same time and he beat Petty plenty of times. Not arguing skill I'm arguing that his stats are a little inflated cause he ran alot more races than anyone else.

    It's hard to put all championship winners in because they have changed the points system so much.
    I just don't trust hillbilly math. Especially when it isn't at least a somewhat consistent points system. Lol

    1. Pearson
    2. Petty
    3. Gordon
    4. Earnhardt
    5. Johnson
    Reasoning. Pearson has the highest win percentage of all. Petty has 200 wins. Gordon has more wins in the modern era, 1972 to present, when competition was higher, than anyone. Johnson and Earnhardt, 7 championship. I personally put more emphasis on wins than championships because of many many different formats, but they are still important. Hence Earnhardt being in the top 5 even though he is 8th on the wins list.

    Can someone explain to me how it's "more competitive" when Jimmie won his championships than when Earnhardt won his? People keep saying this without any evidence. I just randomly checked 2008 and there were 12 different winners for 36 races. Then, I randomly checked 1994 and there were 12 different winners in 31 races. That's just as many different winners in fewer races.

      I don't think when they talk more competitive they mean right now it's more in NASCAR hey day. Like I would say mid 80s and 90s were some as the most competitive years. With guys like rusty, Mark Martin, earnhardt, Waltrip, Gordon, Tony Stewart. All being very successfully. I mean in 1994 Mark Martin had 7 wins and average finish of 8.6 yet still finished second to Dale earnhardt today before playoff he would have championship with season like that so I think when people talk less competition it's more 70s back

    • @austinhiggins4645
      @austinhiggins4645 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they mean that when it comes to the 70s and below I do think JJ era was slightly more competive then dales though.
      Mainly do to how many championship drivers comparably
      Dale Sr had to face Jeff Gordon bill elliot mark martin Tony Stewart Texas Terry bobby lobonte darrel waltrip bobby Allison for a few years and of course the wonder boy
      While JJ faced jeff gorodn mark mark martin kevin harick Denny Hamlin kyle Busch Tony Stewart joey logano brad keslaski dale jr Carl Edwards kurt Busch matt kenseth Martin truex and more dale had more all time greats but JJ face more great drivers all on a regular basis

    Jimmie win all 7 under a different points system, won all his races with one crew chief. Only had 1 road course win. Only had 5 super speedway wins. Was very good, don't get me wrong. Was probably 4th on the list. No way 1 or 2. Petty, Earnhardt, Gordon, Johnson, Pearson.

    You can't rate drivers by championships. If u did, Alan Kulwicki would be better than Davey Allison and a lot of other drivers. Terry Labonte would be better than Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliott, and Bobby Allison. Jeff Gordon's got the better record in a more competitive era, so I'd pick Jeff Gordon over Dale Earnhardt.

      @@rcracer8872 Alan won the Winston Cup on 1/3rd of the budjet not only as a driver but an engineer and owner. Davey won heading into his rookie season and every season till his death and won pretty much every major race. I am not focused on most wins or whatever but who had the most Raw Talent behind the wheel. If i had too choose #6 It'll be Tim Richmond. mjzukaslugger7 20 years ago I wouldn’t of argued that except for Cale taking Jeff’s place but times change my friend. I’m an old DW fan turned KB in 03. It’s hard for me when you get into the top 5. Richard Petty won all those races in a time when they would run multiple races in a week. I just think it should be split up into different eras and then go from there.
      I also think there should be another category for drivers who were just naturally talented. Tim Richmond would be in that class for sure.
