Review: Leif Ove Andsnes' Very Impressive Warner Recordings

  • This very fine 36-Disc set from Warner highlights an ironic fact. Leif Ove Andsnes is one of the great pianists working today. He recorded an impressive body of work for Virgin/EMI (now Warner), then they dropped him (or lost him to Sony) or both, and now they issue this box telling us how wonderful he is (or was). So why doesn't he still make records for them if he's that good? Such are the ways of the classical music recording world.

    Thanks so much covering this 😎 He’s been doing stuff on Sony. I wonder how long this will hang around- the Blomsted box was gone in months!

    I've been a fan of his since his international recording debut with the Grieg/ Liszt concertos. I totally agree on the Janacek and Nielsen disks. They are truly outstanding. I know Andsnes was a Nielsen fan from an early age, wishing for - and allegedly getting - the scores of the composer's complete piano music for his confirmation.

    Recently listened all the Lyric Pieces of Grieg by Andsnes. Highly recommend...

    I am glad to find another fan of that first Grieg recording. It was my own first Grieg Piano Concerto disc, and I still like it better than the remake. The Liszt no. 2 is also great - really atmospheric somehow, like he gets the quirky darkness in the piece.

    My favourite pianist of his generation. Amazing to get all of this at this price. Any time I do a top ten desert island Classical discs list in my head, the Nielsen is guaranteed a place. The Schubert partnership with Bostridge was a really creative way to approach the sonatas and lieder too.

    I was worried that The Long, Long Winter Night wasn’t included. I bought the EMI Encore budget reissue. Apart from the opening Grieg pieces, the program was a series of pieces by composers I hadn’t known existed. Andsnes must have had somebody at EMI who had his back - his discography is so full of neglected gems. His Janacek is wonderful, though my favorites is still Schiff on ECM, with a shoutout to Austbø’s complete cycle. Maybe the Haydn and Mozart were just done as favors to the suits.

      The Long, Long Winter Night is one of my favourite discs, along with his Nielsen and Janacek. It's just amazing we can get all this stuff in one box at this price.

    His Rachmaninov Concertos with the Berlin Phil and the LSO are one of my favorite versions (with Kocsis and Wild). The recording quality is fantastic, and this is the cycle to get if you want to hear what the orchestra is doing.

    On Classics Today you gave his Mozart concertos a 10/10 review. I think rightly so. But now you are more critical. It us interesting to hear how your opinion changed. Like you did on the Barbirilli-box

      @@dennischiapello7243 I have always recommended the Alfred Brendel Vanguard recording of D. 958 as a reference, in spite of the lack of a first movement exposition repeat. Also the Richter Eurodisc studio recording is a long time favorite, while Claudio Arrau's D. 958 is his finest Schubert on disc.

    Did he re-record the 3rd Chopin sonata for Warner or was it licenced? Because his actual debut release was an LP on a Norwegian label in 1987 featuring the opus 58, Beethoven's opus 110, and a concert etude by Smetana.

    • @sergeabud7046
      @sergeabud7046 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The initial 1992 CD release of all three Chopin sonatas was a double CD on Virgin which also included some mazurkas and études to fill the second disc up. It’s still available separately.
