Another source for inexpensive leather is going to Good Will stores where you can buy clothing including leather coats and jackets very cheaply indeed. A friend of mine recent bought a brown leather coat and was able to make two quivers from the sleeves, dozens of arm gaurds and finger tabs for archery and a pair of moccasins. I think he said the jcoat was $3.00. How many draw string bags you could make from it is anyone's guess but I should think it would be about as many as you'd need.
I've never had an interest in this sort of thing, but your video makes it look easy and fun. Your style bags would make nice handmade gifts. I may give it a try and make some for family gifts. Funny, I found this video by chance while looking for ideas on how to cook a rabbit. I'm an American and I must say that you Brits seem quite handy. Thank you for your video. Please have a nice day. Cheers....
You are awsome. I followed your example a few years ago and got a load of swatches from local leather stores. I got so much I still haven't used all of it. Thanks Sean!
Hi, If you want to make a bag that has a flat base leave the swatches with straight sides &, sew around the outside as normal. Then put your thumb and forefinger inside to form the corners of a rectangle or square base. You will have a little triangle of excess leather at each end of the bottom seem.Mark and sew at right angles to the bottom seam of the bag . you end up with something that looks like the bottom of a tetra pack. Also if you use two strings fed from either end,no clips required..
I have made a few of those string bags made from the tongs of old trainers I have even used material such as denim from old jeans very useful string bags
Hi Sean - Love the idea of sourcing the soft leather... bet all the swatches in my area are long gone by now though...! :-) ...However I will be seeing what I can find locally.
Great Idea Sean, I need to find ways to gift my players without expense. Thanks for this idea, I know exactly where to get stuff like those old sample books, which can be quite heavy. You are quite the crafty bag maker. Awesome idea!
for leather i harvest furniture. couches, chairs . you can get an enormous amount of square footage from a couch. and being furniture leather it is good quality.as for the clips old back packs are a good source too. your foxhide bag is awesome. i love it.good call and use of a bit of road kill.way to use all available resources. new sub here.
great deal on the samples i have been using of pant legs and shirt sleves and sewing them shut and adding the draw string but i like your better. i did find som old leather coats at a rumage sale i cut up for scrape too.
Getting leather from old dicrded sofas is a great idea. An you got enought to make a shirt and leggings. I have a design for a mountain man style coat in my head. Just needed to get enough leather. I'll be looking out for old sofas now. Thanks for the tip.
THAT is awesome! Thank you for the idea about getting the leather plates from furniture store! Not so sure about the fox bag with the fox head though, lol.
What sort of thread did you use? I've found that dental floss works really well for stitching leather as it is strong and easy to get hold of. It's up to you if you use the minty stuff!!!
here in the states, i go out "junking"-ppl put old furniture out to the curb for garbage pickup-i got enuf leather(yes REAL)off of a couch to make a shirt & some leggings with-i just put the un-dyed side to the outside ;) also grab leather & suede coats/jackets @ thrift stores
I have never been asked to make anything for some one else. I am happy to make a bay its just finding a fox to use. As I have said I dont hunt and only use road kill. I am looking for a fox for my self as I want to get a complete hide (feet and tail included) Where do you live UK or abroad? I have just finished tanning some deer hides. A fallow deer I was given and a Muntjac I found road kill.
i forgot about the sample booklet thing! i'd heard about that a few months ago, but never had time to go further into attempting working with leather. also, i have some vegan/veggi friends who i MUST show this to :P
i dont like at all killing animals and doin from them different things, but i really like ur making ssso original reticules! i like them sso much u do very original and useful work! i want to make reticule from skin and fabric myself and use reticule-bag (as a hanbag)
i should make a fox hand warmer like the ones Quarter backs and deer hunters use and just make the fur on the inside put a hand warmer in there and hands never cold again
i like the way u sed a roadkilled fox.......but i guess there is some people that is really pissed when they see this bag of yours....the head on the bag was kinda overkill haha but whatever. its a nice bag anyway. its better than leave the fox rotting in the ditch..
I with 100%. I have no interest in selling amy of the items I make. I show people how to make things for them selves. Lots more make it your self videos on the way. Not all completly free though but much cheaper than buying them else where.
What is it they say about people wearing fur, (in bags or otherwise)? Oh yeah - fur, worn by beautiful animals and ugly people! Did you eat the eyes out of it then?
he used road kill it's not like it was farmed fur or hunted pelt, if he had I'd be right there with you I hate that it's legal to hunt for sport and trophy instead of for food, but with road kill I think he did a decent thing of saving the animals beauty as best as he could.
C. Wade Rider Before commenting you need to watch the video properly. 1) He made the bags from leather swatches from a furniture shop. That's farmed leather! 2) No mention where the leather cords came from. Now watch this guys other videos and you'll see he hunts foxes. Road kill eh!

Bushcraft as well mate cheeres
Can I have one?
cool
Sean I'll ask my friend if he took any pics and I'll forward them to your e-mail.
With skinning road kill isn't that a little stinky?? and it can be dangerous if the animal is diseased.
hmmn is the fox dead?
I dont take it out anywhere for that very reason. Although it was road kill the animal rights people would still lynch me.
Excellent tip thanks mate I'll have a look around. Any chance of some photos of the moccassins. If so PM me and i'll give you my email address.
Sean
You're insane, why did you take off the tail?
Bushcraft leather tandy
no idear what tinder is, but i think one drawstring bag is fine, more thn that is fetish,
a special bag for road kill eeeeks
Tinder is dry wood and stuff used to start a fire.
Arn't you worried about contracting rabies or something from using roadkill animals?
Skaldi3
Aren't you worried about catching sickness from the ague? Seriously, come on.
What is it they say about people wearing fur, (in bags or otherwise)? Oh yeah - fur, worn by beautiful animals and ugly people! Did you eat the eyes out of it then?
