Your homeland is very beautiful ! Was ww2 very hard on it? I see plenty of wreckage so obviously its seen some action but did it get a pounding like say peleliu or Guadalcanal?
This atoll, along with 3 others, were bombed and shelled for more than 2 years after the U.S. captured the atolls that they could use for advanced bases. These Japanese occupied atolls were heavily fortified and had large garrisons. They were evaluated as not worth the effort to capture them and they remained isolated til the end of the war. Many Japanese starved on these islands when food and supplies ran out. Kwajalein and Eniwetok were captured in January and February 1944, they were turned into large advanced bases for U.S. forces.
My father was assigned to VMSB-151 based on Engebi, Enewetak Atoll and spoke of conducting dive bomber attacks on the island during the last year of the war.
@@drno72 VMSB-151 would have flown the Douglas "Dauntless" SBD dive bomber. The Marine Corps was the last service to fly that famous aircraft, Navy squadrons had already converted to the Curtiss SB2C "Helldiver". Many of the "Dauntless" squadrons were later sent to the Philippines to support the recapture of those islands in 1945.
Exquisite! Still the scars of war after decades.
