I caught a 52 lb. salmon on a stick with paracord bait! (If you're going to tell a fishing story, you need to stretch it). Thanks for the tip. Great work as usual!

I was sitting on the bank of a small stream one day whittling on a stick and all of a sudden an 18 inch rainbow trout jumped out of the water and landed in my frying pan! LOL...

@@legman1947 I was sitting under an olive tree one day when a giant olive branch fell into the water and hit a fish. Several olives got crushed and formed a layer of oil on the surface of the water which caught fire. When the fire died down, there was a perfectly cooked tuna lying on a bed of roasted seaweed.

Cpl. Kelly, as is your custom, another superior presentation. Our primary emergency fishing here in the Philippines will be done on the ocean for species like the small skip-jack tuna. I always carry a kit for hand-line fishing when we put to sea, even a short day trip. No one would want to eat anything from the local (heavily contaminated) drainage ditches. There is a species that survives and thrives in those ditches, however, all but one Filipino tells me "we don't eat those." It is called a janitor fish and they look like an armoured-plated catfish. Further inland and up in the mountains I will carry a kit and enjoy what lives there for dinner.

Now that truly was OUTSTANDING! It goes to show that you don't need hundreds of dollars worth of fishing lures. That bright orange paracord with the white center cords frayed out, sure looks like an attention getter. Based on your success, it is an attention getter under the water.

While my compact fish kit is a little more heavy. Use a stainless bento box (2 high) QuAlways has some good prices ... put in a flat fly fishing reel, or a yo-yo reel (only ~20 ft of line on these). Have your designated line length and line test on the reel. Include sma series of small fish (trout, panfish) fish pole eyes and eye tip ... or large eyes and tip (salmon, steelhead, bucket mouth bass ...). And velcro strips. Carve a handle slot for the fishing reel, and velcro strap on tight. Same for the pole eyes. Cut the pole tip into "#". Place eye tip on center toothpick, and velcro entire pole picks together, clamping eye tip to end. Run line through. Second bento box (with wire snap closures) put all the bait, lures, flashers, swivels, hooks, flies, line weights, and various spools of line for leaders. Make your designated fishing system. Catch some fish ! When done, disassemble back into bento boxes.

Just made this fishing rod using a scout stave to demonstrate to my Boy Scout Troop. Was able to cast about 20/25ft using the improvised reel. Will work better with some whipping action from bamboo or the green sticks the Sean used here.
We practiced the whippings to make the end loop for bamboo style fishing rods. Planning a backpack/fishing trip in the coming weeks, this skillset will be helpful!

Hey Cpl. When you show a fish you caught, you really take your time. Any chance you could give the kind of fish it is and whether it’s good to eat. I’m a Newby at this and that would REALLY help.
And I would like to see how you prepare frog legs?
I’ll go check your list just in case you. Have done it already once. Thanks.

When I was growing up my brothers & I provided most of the fish my family ate during the spring, summer & fall using a 4inch branch fora pole - although we didn't have any high faluton handle. Back then we got line, 2 split shots, a hook and a cork (this was before plastic bobbers) all on an H shaped kit holder for a nickel. That, a couple of worms, crickets, grasshoppers, anything else we could find provided dinner for the family. We didn't know about paracord back then it was only used in the military back then.

Never have had much luck fishing, but seeing that orange 550 cord used makes me wonder if I might not give it another shot. Ever thought of using a pellet rifle on small game? That I can do; look at a Hatsan 95 in .22 as a basic entry point that will put game on the table. Still trying to play catch-up on all your outstanding content, the more I see, the more inspired I become.

  • @shawnr771
    @shawnr771 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff.
The orange paracord looked like it worked well as bait.
As part of a survival fishing kit. One could also add a couple of small lures, rubber worms. They weigh almost nothing.
In addition a small roll of actual fishing line has numerous uses.
Depending on your situation. Example a vehicle bug out kit you could add a couple of mini reels.

Just wondering. Does it help you with TH-cam if we listen to the commercials? I'm thinking it might help you financially if I listen to the whole commercial. I've established 30 seconds as the longest time I'll "listen". If it doesn't help you either financially or "stability" with TH-cam, I'll probably just skip them.

Bill, I always watch the full commercial on channels that teach truly useful information. Our thought is that is the very least we can do to reciprocate and reward the vlogger for their efforts. Like you, I have a time limit but it gets longer as the length of the video extends. Max will be a two to three minute commercial for a long presentation that will be helpful.

Wow man you caught fish with an piece of orange para cord well thats definitely a new one for me outstanding man, here in Alberta it’s illegal to use barbed hooks we gotta pinch em flat with pliers. It’s supposed to give the fish a fighting chance yep you read that right, pretty silly I think, Peace from 🇨🇦

That orange paracord bait is a great idea...and in clear water you can see the fish take it...I used to tie a lot of flies, and found for panfish, I could not beat a black fuzzy bait, so for those fish, I bet a fuzzed out bit of black paracord would work just as well!

Another thing you can do is fix the line near the handle but have it freely running through a loop at the top. It can then be pulled in with one hand and cast out by letting go. Allowing for a longer line to be used and retracted. Not dissimilar to the way a fly line is cast just without the reel being there.
