Sonny played in Little Rock, then a few months later in St. Louis. I decided to attend both concerts, so I gathered some musical buddies to drive to LR and attend my first live show with Sonny. And I am so glad I did! Being in the physical presence of such a musical guru is a million times more intense than listening to his CDs, even on an excellent sound system. Such a vibrant performance, and such great interactions between him and his musicians on stage. Respect for each other, fun together and the love of jazz, of course! We stayed over in a hotel after the show, and the next morning, at breakfast, my entire body, each and every cell in it, were still vibrating from the evening's musical feast. Never before or after have I felt this happening to me. Sonny is a very spiritual being and a most gifted musician! My deepest reverence and love for his genius! Long live Sonny!

It must be now around 45 years ago when I saw the Sonny Rollins "On the Bridge" programme.....right in the middle of all the hippie stuff...he seriously turned me onto jazz...yes to get into that zone...a true master and genius musician...never a boring "cliche" solo.

He also did a solo performance at the Apollo, after coming off of his bridge hiatus. Which i saw and it was fantastic.

The meaning of what he's saying goes beyond his words here. The term "human computer"; we are the only beings we know with the capacity he's describing. We are it. This is our universe, all we currently known and understand.... and so much we dont understand consciously, but possibly understand subconsciously. And thats why this subconscious is such a vital well. It contains all the potential that's hardwired into our brain. I'm not religious, but this hits me on that level.
Having seen Sonny perform in person, he definitely communicates this vast well of potential in his concerts. It goes beyond jazz, or saxophone, ...etc.

"Get rid of the clichés... You can't play and think... Get out of the way and let the music play." That's what genius does -- and everybody else copies into clichés what the genius just got rid of.

I just put into TH-cam - what is a jazz purest? It took me here and now with Sonny's education. I wonder if Gerschwin wrote 'Fascinating Rhythm' in his sub-conscious mind, or Brubeck's 'Take Five?' Luckily all worry goes away when you can think!

How sad that this wonderful musician fell for yoga and zen. Here is what everyone needs
"All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and ... he was buried and ... he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." (I Corinthians 15:3-4)
"The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." (I John 1:7)
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." (Acts 16:31)
