One of my friends said that she tricks herself into doing work by making it seem fun. It's also a good way to get kids to work. She tricks herself into cleaning by pretending the dust/dirt on the floor are tiny enemies and the cleaning utensils are weapons to defeat them. I do similar things when writing papers and other things I don't feel like doing.
When I'm productive I'm on FIRE!!! but most of the time I'm a lizard * cry face * I'm just trying to work on consistency. Something that I heard and like to remind myself which usually gives me a nice swift kick up the bum is ' feel the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret ' . Thanks for the video. You're so knowledgable. x
I just tell myself successful people don't procrastinate. I want to be successful. Plus you will feel so good when it's all done. I make a to do list as this helps. I also don't allow myself to do things l like; watch TV, or go on the computer until it's done.
So now I know how to conquer procrastination! I will have to get right on that, tomorrow, if I have time, or maybe next week, unless something comes up.
/Schedule it/ - I just heard Sonia Choquette recommend this...but I procrastinated last night and this morning & didn't schedule what I wanted to to, so I'm sitting here watching your video on not procrastinating instead rather than doing what I wanted to get done. So - you're right.
I was notorious for procrastinating. I became known to people as the guy who never did what he said he was gonna do--I realized that this damaged my credibility with them..So I learned to become task oriented, and focus on a singular task at a specific time, (instead of having broad, vague goals)..For instance, instead of having a goal of "exercise today", set your goal to, "Walk 1 mile to the park on Monday at 3pm". I was able to meet larger goals by completing specific tasks on time.
@Rettequetette That's an interesting and different perspective! For some of us it's a motivating and positive and works. Of course, different strokes for different folks!
I love all of your videos...the most helpful tip i heard was "just do it!"so lets take heed ppl that are struggling like myself..I also realized that if u stop and try to help someone else it takes the focus off of myself...I naturaly start having a tendency to get it done..even if only baby steps..Its a step...thankyou marie for your words of encourgament:)
"If you don't want to schedule it, you probably don't want to do it" I'm going to keep that in mind. That's probably the most honest answer ever. There are things definitely worth scheduling!
"If you are not willing to schedule it - you probably do not want to do it!" Thank you for the reminder to read Steven Pressfields book - fantastic. Lets slow this lizard down! Awesome vid again xx.
This is the 4th time I have heard about The War of Art - stopped the video and went over to Amazon to order it. Check! No more procrastinating on that purchase. Thanks for the suggestions. Good stuff!
I overcame procrastination.. used to do assignments last minute, putting minimum effort into my teacher training thesis. When I got 45 marks, I said to myself ... "imagine if i had put effort in. Deep down I was a perfectionist, putting no real effort in protected me. If you change the way you speak to yourself.. Replace ”I have to” with ”I choose to”. Replace ”I must finish” with ”When can I start?” Replace ”This is so big” with ”I can take one small step”. Source = The Now Habit (5*)
The "accountability"-strategy is kind of negative... you basically tell yourself "if you don't do this now, so-and-so will happen". Kind of like a threat, which triggers your subconscious mind to wanting to do it even less. Thanks for the book reccommendation, though. I'll check it out. For the hard core procrastinators among us, I would definitely recommend The Now Habit, by Neil Fiore.
Thank you so much for this great video!! Simple but very useful tips on how to overcome our own barriers, as always :) I´d add a few more tips on this list: First, to visualize yourself and focus on how you will feel emotionally after achieving what you want (specially the positive emotions such as hapiness, proudness, etc) Secondly, write down the actions that you will need to take in order to get it, the benefits you will get if you do it and what you won´t get if you do nothing about it. This way your brain will get some extra motivation. Hope it helps! :)
Just five minutes helps. Say to yourself you're only going to work on a something for just five minutes then you end up working an hour. Once you get the rolling, its easier to roll on.
I see myself as the procrastination queen... got my schedules but I can't work before it is really last minute LOL... yeah i try jezzdooet 2 atm :) ... like the format (@marie and @michelle) °Sara°
Procrastination really feels like a post-millenium decease. Never felt it before 99, and I wonder how much the Internet can be blamed. oh, and I totally know the girl below :) tweeted!
I have a bullet journal...however, i still procrastinate like crazy. I really hate myself for doing that. At this point, I just feel so lost. Idk what to do...
THE SECRET TO GET OVER PROCRASTINATION IS TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO SH*T. YOU DONT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING YOU DONT WANT TO DO. But guess what? Get ready for the consequences. it's up to you.
Thank's Marie however I disagree with the concept of social accountability described here. Accountability comes from. conviction not fear of embarressmen. I believe we are swimming in the wrong water when trying to establish sense of responsibility based on fear, as the outcome in this case would be the absence of fear turns me back to the first square. Accomplishments based on fear will only fuel deeper fear and bring us to a point for avoiding what you call social embarressment, to trespass every moral boundries gradually. The reason is when I centre everything around my survival(eliminating the fear which is actually an illusion), it be always the survival that will talk loudest. This attitude is really dangerous, it's better to understand and disect the illusion behind fear rather than masking it up with desperate approach such as social embarressment. What other think of me in 99.9 percent of time has almost insignificant to zero effect on my life. Why create a pathological interpretation of fear instead of seeing it for what it is: AN ILLUSSION
Your background music and lecture is nearly the same volume which detracts from what you're saying. It's almost like listening to someone at a party, etc.
This has been on my "Watch Later" list for 2 years.
Major Velvet is it still there? Lol
haha, that was hilarious
Jithu Nair are u still alive

My husband, a retired Marine, always says, "You don't have to like it, you just have to do it." Irritating, but it works. :)
+Pamela Chappell Good point, I think i am going to use this.
Love this nugget from the video >>> "If you don't want to schedule it, you probably don't want to do it."
Agreed! Sometimes its a sign that you should just say no and move on.

@PeaceUdo that's one to write down and repeat often.
"if you don't want to schedule it, you probably don't want to do it."
BAM!
I've never heard it put quite that way. Love it!
Great video. Much love.

There is also a ted talk about the battle between the present self and future self. I think it applies here.
"If you are not willing to schedule it - you probably do not want to do it!"

Procrastination is just you going for pleasure before work. The best way to get over procrastination is just to make a to-do list and reward yourself.
*Adds to watch later list*

Procrastination is addicting its better than writing more than 6 page report lol
THE SECRET TO GET OVER PROCRASTINATION IS TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO SH*T.
YOU DONT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING YOU DONT WANT TO DO.
But guess what?
Get ready for the consequences.
it's up to you.
your tip 1 is not really a good one, because if you tell it to someone you already kind of get the feeling that you did it (eventhough you didn't)
I watch the rest of this later..
