Harvesting Airlayers, and Pruning the Parent Tree Part 1 - Try Bonsai

  • In part 1 of this 2-part video, I harvested an air layer from my Ficus Nerifolia. This air layer was done on my first pruning/styling of this tree, and I am hopeful that the air layer survives, as well as at least 1 cutting.
After harvesting the air layer, I pruned it up to increase the chances of it surviving. I went on to some branch/bud selections on the parent tree to begin shaping and bringing my design into focus.

Tree 2 is cool. Nice looking trunk on it. Getting rid of the suckers with a great tool, our fingers. Nice work shaping of the canopy. Repot in part 2, looking forward to it.

You feel great when something we do roots or grows. Great feeling for you and that calls for a cup of tea.

Those nose pullers really help in cutting that thick bottom near the roots. I know it is not the name, but that is how I remember the tool if I need it. Nice work planting this tree and the roots should take off for you under your care. Taking off some of the branches will lighten the load on the tree and the young roots. Nice thinking.

Thanks so much Tom.... I needed to lighten the load, the "roots" looked meager and I want this air layer to survive 🎉🎉

Ficus usually root well as cuttings bought my first ficus the other day and there was a cutting growing right next to it. The guy said he had a branch break off so it stuck it in the soil. So I got two trees for the price of one

You are getting healthy Ficus nerifolia plants from root cuttings?
Have you had success with root cuttings of other Ficus species?

    • @trybonsai

I've had success with Retusa root cuttings, ficus triangularis root cuttings and I'm waiting to see if I'll get success with the nerifolia.. if I don't this time, I will try again...
      Thanks for reaching out 🎉🎉🎉

@@trybonsai I have very good success with Ficus religiosa root cuttings, it would grow well in your climate.

@@geoffbreen2386 that species grows quite well but space is my issue, and because of the leaf size you can't grow that too small, it will look odd...well it will look odd to me

@@trybonsai If you look at the defoliating process to reduce leaf size, you will see Ficus religiosa as another project. Also you can lift the root system higher above the potting mix each time you repot, gradually exposing more of the roots.

@@geoffbreen2386 I will try that species and see how it works out then.... Thanks for sharing your knowledge my friend 🎉🎉
