    You’re absolutely believable and trustworthy when you grab your belly with both hands in fond memory of some past culinary delight/experience. You bear all the right credentials when you step up to the plate to talk about food and beverages; I don’t know if I would necessarily trust some skinny person’s culinary suggestions. And believe me, my friend, I’m NOT getting fresh or being sarcastic. I’m just saying it like it is - you have to love and enjoy food, if you’re keen on making culinary recommendations. 👏🏻👍🏻

    Tip from a local: The best poutines are in Quebec, away from urban centers. Avoid big food chains (try the small shacks with home made fries), and make sure the cheese is super fresh (made on the same day you are eating it, it should make a 'sqweek' sound when you bite in it).
    I usually buy my cheese directly from the factory, and make my own poutine with home made fries... It's the best!!!

      I once spent a week in Quebec on the company dime. We were told by a cooworker to eat at a place called The Ancient Canadian. My meal was turkey medallions with a maple sauce, a carrot puree and something else, potatoes, I think. It was great food, but we went over our allotted daily budget. Oops!
      We ate at a number of restaurants and one thing I noticed was just about every place had "mayo de maison" or "the house mayonnaise" for the french fries. It's funny how some people sneer at the thought of it, but yet will eat potato salad.
      We didn't have a bad meal the entire time, to include the St. Hubert's Chicken, a roast chicken fast food place. I do regret not getting any Alexander Keith's beer while I was there, though, if only because it's my last name and someone asked "Like the beer?" Maybe some day I'll get to go back.

      I'm embarrassed I've never been to either renowned bagel shop. However, at one of my fave under-the-radar Montreal hotels (hint: it's a apart-hotel in Downtown), and the sister hotel (near The Bay), I've enjoyed the bagels in the breakfast room. I politely asked a front-desk employee (it's a boutique-style operation, with no concierge due to the apart-hotel aspect) whether the bagels were purchased from St-Viateur or Fairmount. He said neither; that they were a different "supplier." Not that I didn't believe him, but it's this mystery that I want to solve. Those bagels, all of them, had sesame seeds. They were on the sweetish side and dense without being too dense. I loved and love them because they remind me of authentic Brooklyn Jewish bagels that we used to enjoy back in the 1980s and 1990s where I worked then. A colleague used to go to a bakery (can't recall which Brooklyn neighborhood) early in the morning and come to work with a large brown paper bag filled with dense, sweet bagels. He said the baker told him he added a little sugar to the water. Whatever, they were scrumptious. But bagels you get in Manhattan at carts, for example, are IMO no way as delicious as Montreal bagels I had at those hotels in Downtown Montreal. So now I MUST go to Fairmount and St-Viateur. :)

My brother said, after the chicken he had at that restaurant (I forget the name) was the best chicken he'd ever had. Mark, you make me smile! I love your videos!
    Canadian here. Yes, do try the poutine. It is everywhere and comes in many variations, from the traditional with the genuine cheese curds (which squeak when you chew them) with dark brown gravy, to the offbeat with bacon, pulled pork, or whatever. Also the Nanaimo bars and butter tarts. Beaver tails I think are more a central Canada thing (Ontario and Quebec). I have never had one.
    If you are on the coast, definitely try the fish. I’m a prairie girl (from Alberta) and my Dad used to take me fishing a lot. I ate so much trout I got sick of it, but what I wouldn’t give to have some nice fresh trout now! Such a lovely fish, related to the salmon but with a more delicate flavour.
    And Kraft dinner with hot dogs and ketchup! A low brow meal for sure but one that delighted my family. For a treat you can stir some sour cream into the KD.
    Tim Horton’s unfortunately has gone down hill. They made their fortune on good coffee with higher fat cream. It was wildly successful and for a while engendered as much patriotic fervour as fireworks on Canada Day. However management decided to begin using a lower quality coffee and they switched the doughnuts to the Orwellianly named Always Fresh system which actually means never fresh.

      @@woltersworld It's gets better. This was my first trip to Ontario province -- OK, let me tell it straight: I only saw Toronto in Ontario, so I haven't "seen" Ontario. Anyhoo, I had watched the Wolters World Toronto video, which was the ONLY reason I went there. My Canadian friends in a certain province begged me not to go to Toronto, or else get shot.
      So, I went to Toronto for four nights (of course, looking back, I should've stayed a week and taken a day trip to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake for vineyard fun). So I exited the Grayline hop-on/hop-off bus at the St. Lawrence Market and went straight for the bakery closest to Front Street. I had the peameal bacon sandwich and four butter tarts. Then I went to a tiny booth/shop and bought nuts and prunes. It was getting late, so I never got to see the entire food market. (when the Canada-U.S. borders re-open, I will return to Toronto but in spring or summer and then take VIA Rail Canada to ... where else ... Quebec province ... can't wait) So as the St. Lawrence Market was soon to close, I exited at Front Street, hopped on the last hop-on/hop-off bus and while finishing the rest of the loop from the Distillery District toward Dundas, I snacked on prunes with the peameal bacon sandwich. Man, slam me down! OH!
      Food-wise and museum&gallery-wise, I'll return to Toronto in a heartbeat. It's just a bit dangerous, becoming like my old neighborhood in Brooklyn circa 1985, yet architecturally resembling Midtown Manhattan and parts of Philly. A cousin of mine suggested I also stay at a cottage in Ontario; I guess she's paying for that. I'd rather check out Sault Ste-Marie on the Canadian side, eating freshly caught pike or some other fish fried up on the grill beside a lake. I'd stay in a lodge or inn. Right now, though, due to Covid-19 it's Can-a-di-an dreamin' upon a summer's day!
      Have a fantastic day dreamin' too, Mark!

    • @mariposapapillon9261
      @mariposapapillon9261 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't blame you ... My first time in Quebec province, 2007, I took a look at poutine and thought it must taste nasty. Don't know how I could've thought that because, hey, I love fries, gravy and cheese, right? So that first time in Quebec province, specifically in Montreal, I headed to Le Plateau and walked the long way through that gorgeous neighborhood at La Banquise (because I was working for a book publishing company, and one of our guidebooks told me to go there). Almost hidden at one end of rue Rachel est, La Banquise is a wonderful restaurant, known for its many types of poutine but great at other foods as well. Anyhoo, I nearly walked past it because I had my eye on the park up ahead (just a few yards away) and the weather was awesome (mid-October, fall foliage in full effect ... ohhh yeaaahhh). But I was afraid to take the leap to poutine -- heck, I couldn't even pronounce it. It took me 8 years, despite friends' coaching me on French pronunciations, to say "poutine" their way. They didn't like me saying "poo-TEEN," but that was preferable over the pronunciation that had Quebecois merchants and residents laughing at me from Charlevoix to Quebec City to Montreal. How was I pronouncing the iconic dish: "pouh-TENH." (As this is a family channel, I'll leave to your imagination why everyone was laughing at me ... and I mean laughing so hard that they were doubling over, tears in their eyes. One older man in St-Jean-de-Baptiste district told me, "Madame, non, non" followed by "Hah-hah-hah-hahhh"). So since being schooled on saying "poutine" the true, Quebecois way, I'm allowed to say "pouh-tin" with the "tin" spoken subtly and with equal stress on both syllables.
      Nowadays I never finish a vacay in Quebec without having poutine, whether at a friend's house or at a restaurant -- often both. But no longer will I attempt poorly in the hotel kitchen. BIG mistake there! Hand-cutting potatoes on vacay? Unh-unh
