It is the end of the "Cold War" split between the East Berlin and West Berlin the capital city of Germany as Russia lost control over their Iron Curtain after first losing control of Germany. East Germany was under Russia's control and the wall was built around West Berlin as the city was in the Iron Curtain, but that western section was free like West Germany though surrounded by the Iron Curtain in the East.
In other words, West Berlin was the small piece of free capitalism in the Iron Curtain so as the wall was coming down the "Wind of Change" was that all of the Iron Curtain would then likely be free soon too. Right now Ukraine is fighting to maintain that freedom from Russia.
Scorpions is a very old band. "We burn the Sky" was in the 70s and listen to "Yellow Raven" too.

It was a very hopeful time in the late '80s, early '90s. The "Eastern Bloc" and the "Warsaw Pact" had collapsed, the Cold War was over, the "Iron Curtain" was gone. (which was particularly noticeable in Germany, which was divided by the Iron Curtain). There was good reason to dream that in the future we could all live together as brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, things turned out differently.
Therefore, nowadays they sing the song with different lyrics. Look for this song dedicated to Ukraine.
Communism is now simply using China instead of the Soviet Union. The fight rages on.

Wind of Change relates to the dissolving of the USSR and Warsaw Pact in 1990. Significantly the destruction of the Berlin wall and Iron curtain which had separated Germany for fifty years, also ending the Cold War between Russia and the West. The song relates to the East German people who could now dream of a future no longer under oppression. A Wind of Change was blowing, a new beginning, families and friends were at last reunited.
When music picks young people up and lift their spirits up, magic is created. Bisscute's exploration into Music is very heart felt!

I was attending College in Belgium (V.U.B.) during this time period. I was lucky enough to see the wall come down, even got a piece of it, it was a massive party. In addition I was at the first leg of the "Wind of Change" Tour in Belgium. They rocked the house down......One of the great "live" bands during this time period. Sounded just like their albums. Great times!

i was 10 when the berlin wall felt, 12 when germany reunited 1990. I remember the refuges my parents helpt, the exciting atmosphere and everything seemed to be possible. Man i love that song and honestly me big bearded man always tear up when i listen to it.
Same age here, and to this day, the fall of the Berlin wall was one of the most profound things in my life. SpaceX is rapidly passing it imho though, but the fall of the wall was HUGE.
@@dalehammers4425 just imagine how it was for us Germans ... I was 14 when news ticker popped up during a TV show with the "Sondermeldung" "Erich Honecker gestürzt!" (Breaking News: Erich Honecker has fallen!) ... it was so unreal that it took me more than 1 hour to realize they were not talking about him falling physically but politically ... I know I cried, there was fear and hope ... fear that the next man in power could be even worse, hope to be able to finally be able to see our family in Eastern Germany without barriers one day ... no one expected the re-union to happen ...
Imagine to live in times when "ABC training" at school had nothing to do with the alphabet ...
and now we are heading back into a new cold (or worse not so cold) war again ... Damn ...

You really need to see the official video for this song to get the full effect of it. It was a huge, HUGE song in its time and still moves many people to tears.

How about House of cards song?
I don't know why this version (massacred by the cut out) is even up. You can still get the general idea but to fully appreciate one needs to hear the one with the bridge (important in lyrics and music) and the amazing guitar solo. You really have to listen to the full version - you'll understand my feelings. This video is great for a second look at the song and to appreciate Klaus's singing and whistling, but it is only half good to get you acquainted with the masterpiece. It's like Mona Lisa seen only from the top to her nostrils. Or like Birth of Venus with only the shell and legs shown.
Yh actually the solo into a bridge into the last vocals is cut, no idea why either :W
These "live" performances (lip-synched air-band performances) are promotional, usually during some awards show or other event, not an actual concert.
These are meant to give a taste and move on quickly to the next thing. Sometimes a properly executed edited version can be good but most are so sloppy and butchered that I loathe most "single edit", "radio edit", etc.
I agree, the official video or a fan upload of the album recording would have been preferable. Even a live performance from an actual Scorps show would have been better than these commercialized bastardizations of otherwise good/excellent tunes.
I don't understand why a band (or _ANY_ artist) would put out a video that cuts out the best (and most important) parts of their songs. Radio stations do the same thing. You would think people who are _IN_ the music business, would recognize which parts of a song are the best parts, and wouldn't cut them out. Whenever I hear a chopped up version of a song, it pisses me off

Same here! I even hate it when "Greatest Hits" or "Best of" albums get some crappy edited version of songs, or a live performance instead of the original studio session. I mean, I suppose it makes sense if the live version was somehow the one that performed better than the original (i.e. Nightwish's Ghost Love Score Live at Wacken in 2013), but still.
In my youth, I did my own "edited versions", but that was out of necessity cos cassette tapes (the only "custom mix" media available at the time - the 80s) were a bitch to deal with ; I hated when songs got cut off cos of running out of tape, and I hated leaving 3-4 minutes of blank space at the end just cos nothing would fit. So I started doing edits ; figuring out what parts of songs I could cut out and still have the song sound decnet and not some choppy mess. At first it seemed like a great idea cos not only would stuff fit, but I could potentially get MORE stuff to fit. I soon learned I was cheating myself of good songs in their entirety that way. I eventually hated having to do it, but it was better than the alternatives... stupid tapes...
But my editing skills improved, and once computers entered the picture, editing got a lot easier and more precise. So now what I tend to do is EXTEND songs, lol. Any cool lick or riff that I feel should have been drawn out a little longer or whatever. It's usually only a few seconds but it can make a difference.
Some bands/artists also have a habit of ending songs prematurely by not repeating the chorus/reprise a couple of times as most songs tend to do, or the endings are just too abrupt otherwise, so those I tend to extend by several seconds (anywhere form 20-60 seconds) just by slipping in a couple extra choruses before the end.
Anyway, I'm babbling here, but the point is, I too hate that edited crap if it means taking stuff out or away.
Speaking of Scorpions and song lengths, one of the recent back catalog re-issues featured a version of Holiday that ran for 9 or 10 minutes (as opposed to it original 6¾ minute run). It's the same mix as on the 1979 album Lovedrive (or the 1989 remix from Rockers N Ballads - I'm not sure which, but it's one of the two), but rather than fade out where it normally does just under 7 minutes, it continues until the drums kick in and the song carries on for another couple of minutes until it finally fades out.
Anyone who likes to make out to that song would definitely appreciate those extra minutes, lol.

I was in Berlin when the wall came down November 9, 1989. Actually watched history being made. Army, 8th Infantry Division
The members of Scorpions were from Hanover, West Germany... they grew up on 50's and 60's rock n' roll music and Scorpions began their career in the 70's. Now, in East Germany (which was under a Communist regime), western music was banned... The USSR had banned The Beatles in the 60's, so the Scorpions saw the polarizing attitude towards rock music on either side of the Berlin wall.
As the Scorpions rose to global stardom in the 80's, they wanted to play Russia in 1988, where they had built up a fanbase. The Soviet Premiere Gorbachev liked their music, and the Scorpions played Russia for the first time in 1988 and again in 1989 for the Moscow Peace festival.
Klaus Meine (lead vocals) was inspired by the fact that the Scorpions were able to play music in Russia where rock music had once been banned... Also, the fact that nazi Germany in 1941 had attacked the USSR during WW II and killed 27 million Russians... and here was a German rock band that had won over Russians w/ their music... It was a testament to the healing power of music. Once Klaus had written the song, the change that he had sensed was coming to Germany as the Berlin wall came down in 1990 and East & West Germany were reunited since 1945.
This version was cut short! Nice reaction! When the Soviet Union took the Berlin wall down, and East and West Germany re-united. Was the inspiration for this song. A Happy time! Saw them very often. "Wind of change" was the first song i was listening when i drove for the first time after getting the driving license..
the reason for older songs being short was radio requirements and time limitations of old recording media formats such as cd , lp ,cassette if you did want to go past the 1 hr barrier and use multiple records that was an extremely high cost to artist and consumer to do so but was usually worth it .

I was Army Infantry when the Soviet Union fell apart and this song was out. It really was a different time back then. Spent my child hood knowing ww3 could happen at any time. Then going off into the Infantry to fight in that future war. For a little period of time we all thought the wars were over. That did not last long. But it was a wonderful time

I was front row center at their concert on March 29th, 1991 in Wichita, KS. World War II was about fifty years before this. This was about the fall of the USSR in the 80's. Very interesting history. The wall reference is in regard to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall that joined East Germany again with West Germany and they again became Germany. Might big thing Ronald Reagan was president. This is one of my fave tunes ever for the lyrics and add all the musical part of it and it's just amazing.

The song was primarily a hit due to the times it came out: it was the end of the Cold War and hope for better times and the feeling of the „wind of change“ after several decades of east-west divide (especially for Germany). You know that Germany was devided into two states for more than 40 years and 1991 was also the year of reunification of Germany. You don‘t understand the song without knowing the context.
The Soviet Union may have fallen, but the war with Communism still rages on, we just dont like admitting it. And right now, Communism is winning.

I’m from Sweden and I was 13 in 1989 when the wall came down, and 14 in 1990 when East Germany and West Germany united. In the summer of 1990 I was on a 1 month backpacking vacation with some of my relatives through Europe, and the first stop was in Berlin which still had small parts of the Wall still not demolished. I picked up a few pieces for keeps sake, and I’m very glad I did.
We traveled by train from my home town of Malmö (Sweden), through Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Venice, Monaco, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and back home to Sweden. Was amazing just being in East Germany and Czechoslovakia.
This song was one of the most important (if not THE most important) songs of that era, particularly because of what it represented.

This was the most famous song during the break down of the iron curtain and it is a hymn of freedom Bisscute. I never forget the pictures in the News from people in the former east block celebrating their freedom and their new life.

My father served in the Army and he was stationed in West Berlin during the Berlin airlift in 1949.
I remember the wall finally coming some 40 years later.

I was stationed in Bad Kissingen when the Berlin Wall came down in 1990. I shortly after was stationed back to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma where I attended Advanced Non Commissioned Officers Course before being deployed to Desert Sheild. This song was a big song during this time frame in my life as I left behind my almost 2 yr old daughter who was born in Schweinfort, Germany in 1998. My wife was 7 months pregnant with our second daughter that was born while I was deployed, on Thanksgiving day during a Sand storm I received a Red Cross message she had been born.
