Hey Max. Bravo! That was one hell of a trench you had to dig. Your new shop is sweet! I don't recommend moving a shop to anyone. It nearly killed me.

Talking about Tractors, sent my trades assistant out with the Tractor with drilling attachment off PTO to drill hole for earth rod for one of our crude oli storage tanks.
Had the permit to drill in the marked location.
He came back to the workshop and said there was a growling noise coming out of the hole when drilling.
He had drilled into the 66kV pilot cable which was not shown on the drawings, installed in 1955 when they built the refinery!

    Trenches are epic.
Couple more machines to move & you’ve probably just about got it sorted.
Having power sorted will be a big relief - can’t imagine what the sparky bill will be like? 😳😳
Rome wasn’t built in a day.
    Good steady progress.
Just about need to concrete the two veranda areas & enclose the sides with roll down canvas blinds or something to give you much more outside storage space to free up room inside.
Old backhoe hopefully can dig all your septics to connect up the thunder box and the new house plumbing next.👍

That's a lot of trenching Max. I did about 200 feet at my shop to change over to 3 phase and thought that was a lot. Seems rather short now. I used to work with a guy from Australia about 20 years ago and he said you can get 3 phase power at residential locations. We can't and therefore I've had to use phase converters in the past. Fortunately I'm now in an industrial park and have 3 phase. My service is 347/600 volt, 200 amp and it is stepped down (by my own transformer) to 120/208 volt for most of the shop. Nearly every machine in Canada is 208, 220/440 dual voltage, 550 or 600 volt. With my set up I can run any of them. I think you're going to really like your new electrical service. Ken

I like that you persuaded your wife to build the shop before the house. 😊 That was quite a trench there. Could you gone overhead with the power cables or are you required to bury them? I went over head for mine because it was free. The power company was going to charge me if I wanted them buried.

Hi Tom . Lol , the Wife is still working on the house design ! We could have gone overhead with the power , but in the ground was the easy option . Don't have to worry about tree branches falling on them . Doing the trenches myself was a big cost saver . Hope your recovery is progressing well . Cheers . 👍

Holy cow Max, you've been busy! She's filling up fast.. I was really interested in your electrical feed...It's quit a bit different than ours. It sound like you have a 415V main service (3-phase) "Y" configured with a neutral so any leg to neutral gives you 220v single phase..My best guess. Are you also 50 Hz ?
That makes for a nice balance between wire size and obtaining the lower voltages..
I like the Smoko / Skull area "mandatory"
    Cheers.....Dean

I am no sparky but in Land Down Under our single phase is 240 volts at 50Hz. As you mentioned our 3 phase is 415V.

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Dean . 415 v 50 Hz 32amps per phase . Not sure how it is worked out , but with 32 amps per phase you get a lot more than just 96 amps . I think the maximum is 250 amps before you have to go to a commercial supply . I should be ok as i know a couple of shops only have half the power that i have available . 👍

Nice scrap pile. Heavy thick plate never lasts long here. It does not take long to cut chunks out of it to make something. It looks as though you are making great progress Max. Moving is horrible.

The old machines like that old backo are heaps better than the crap they make these days.. we've got a 60hp case tractor with a front bucket that's only a few years old and the front bearings have collapsed again, they have 2 crown wheels with a pinion at the bottom so they can get a tighter turning circle and as soon as anything gets even slightly loose it loses all clearance in the gears and chews the crap out of them.. they put an upgrade kit in under warranty (tapered roller bearing instead of a roller bearing) and the end float on the tapered roller bearing is set with cheese grade shims that spit themselves out because the tapered roller bearing has a 0.005" to 0.010" clearance at a guess slip fit which walks the shims out.. we're currently fighting with case to fix it as it really should have been a recall with how many have failed and as soon as it's fixed it's going up for sale, it's just not worth spending thousands of bucks every couple of years to fix what never should have left the drawing board.. we got a new machine so we didn't have to keep fixing the 50+ year old machines we had but the new machine has needed way more repairs in the few years than the old stuff has needed in the last couple of decades
