    So I have been using cast iron for years at home and camping. It is the greatest cooking tool out there. Helps with iron in the blood as well. Way healthier than teflon in the blood. I was at a cooking class recently where they professed using kosher coarse salt to clean the cast iron. No water. Heat the skillet with high heat after wiping any excess food out. Spread in the salt and use your spatula to scrape the pan clean. The salt naturally kills bacteria. Not having to use water to clean while camping reduces your water requirements dramatically! Finish off with your oil method as necessary. Before the salt trick I was doing what you were doing to clean my cast iron. Great videos. I appreciate what you do, and love the photography. Two of my favorite hobbies as well. Keep them coming!

    By reheating it as a last step and getting the oil to smoke, you are creating what’s called polymerization and carbonization (or if you know this already, maybe others who are reading this don’t). Anyway, that’s the key to getting a really nice nonstick finish. After doing that, very little care should be necessary for quite a while, especially if you keep it nice and dry.

    Excellent video, thank you for posting!!
    I use cast iron every day, or carbon steel, or stainless. I got rid of all my anodized, and Teflon.
    Every morning I make 3 eggs, over easy or scrambled, potatoes, and Morningstar bacon, and my skillet just wipes clean with paper towels, then back on the stove till the oil residue smokes, then after cooling, but still warm, a through wipe out with a dedicated lint free cloth towel, and it’s done!! I cook my potatoes/bacon in coconut oil, and eggs in butter, can’t remember the last time I washed it.
    The few times in the past that I did wash it, I used a dab of mild Dawn soap, they just got off the oily residue, didn’t hurt the seasoning, as modern soap like dawn does NOT contain lye, like the soaps of yesteryear. Lye, is what will damage/strip seasoning.

    Thanks Jason, another great tool to have in order to clean your cast iron is a "chain mail" square. Basically it is a metal fabric made out of miniature chain links. It is sold on Amazon and is amazing for removing any and all of the stubborn chunks of food that is left in your cast iron cookware and it does no harm to your seasoning. I always have it with me when I bring my cookware. Thanks for all of your great videos Jason.

    1. Wood only on cast iron. Use a wooden spatula. 2. Use old T-shirts cut into squares about 10", not paper towels. 3. Bring water to a boil in the pan and use the wooden spatula and a cloth square to scrub it out. 4. Then pour it out and set it back on the fire to evaporate. 5. Pull it off the fire and put a bit of oil in the skillet (about the size of a quarter). 6. Use another T-shirt square to spread the oil all over the skillet, inside, back side, sides, etc. When it cools off, it is ready to put away. Your cloth will get somewhat dirty and oily. Just throw them in the wash.
    One of the most important things is to have a skillet that has been properly seasoned. Kent Rollins has a great video on his channel on how to do this. You can't start cooking with a brand new skillet that hasn't been seasoned. It takes some time and effort, but worth it for years to come.

    You can use modern dish soap on CI. The older days there used to be lye in the soap, which removes the seasoning. Seasoning only prevents rust, along with a film of oil. Most of the cleaning is when you use the hot water; dump dirty water and use clean water and soap with a green scrub pad. Rinse and dry, heat a bit and then oil film. For long term storage use mineral oil(found in the cosmetic section in the grocery store); vegetable oil, etc goes rancid.

    Good stuff here. I use the ringer for my quick cleanup. You can find it on amazon. Also course sea salt is a good abrasive that won't take out your seasoning. Also I have stopped dragging cooking oil with me on camping trips and switched over to good old Morrell Snow Cap Lard.

    Jason, great video. A suggestion for people traveling a lot with there cast iron. Try using coconut oil, it’s in a solid form, it will travel better then pure cooking oil. I found that cooking oil always finds it way out of the bottle and makes a mess. Keep the videos coming brother. God bless.

      It is only solid under 18 degrees celcius. I live in Northern Thailand, average close to 30 all year, it is never solid. :-) But really good point for the colder climate areas..

    This guy shows the way to do it. I would just add a couple observations:
    1) It should not be necessary to use soap, but today's dish soaps don't contain the amount of lye they used to. I little soap won't strip the polymerized seasoning.
    2) When I camp. I always have some water on the fire for clean ups, including my pans. I NEVER pour cold water into a hot CI pan. This guy didn't either. When I serve the meal, I immedeately put hot water in the pan while it's still hot. Leave it on the fire or set it aside. Doesn't matter. I clean it after i eat. In that few minutes, virtually everything comes loose with just a little scrape.
    3) he used a second water rinse. So do I if the pan is meat soiled. Proteins, including scrambled eggs, cured meats (sugar), do stick to CI and Carbon steel, but if seasoned, they also come clean easier than anything but teflon.
    4) He cooks on the oil before putting the pan away. This is sort of re-seasoning, but it isn't necessary.
    In general:
    Scrubbing and even scraping with a steel spatuala will not penetrate the previous seasoning layers. The stuff is like epoxy. The only way to destroy it is to heat the dry pan red hot til it literally burns it off - or, pour in cold water into a hot pan. If doing the latter, you will notice the edges of the layering becoming flaky. To repair it, the best way is to get a random orbital sander with a 60 grit pad and just take it all off to the iron and start over. Other wise the flaking won't stop no matter how you try to re-season over it.
    40 years over a campfire with CI and CS. Most home cooking done on a Blackstone and many different CI and CS pans and dutch ovens. Previous years in restauraunt kitchens. This is no BS advice.

    Great video. We haven't used cast iron out camping for years. But after watching your videos I think this summer we're going to reintroduce the cast iron skillet. Even then we were cleaning it wrong because we were using soap and water to clean. Thank you

    Another method of cleaning a cast iron skillet is to use clean sand to scour with a little water. The pioneers that crossed the country used an ancient plant called a horsetail or scouring rush to scour their pans. The Latin name is equisetum hyemale. You can Google it. The head is primarily abrasive silica and you can gather them up in a bunch and tie them together. They are found in OR usually along a stream. I usually find them on poorer wet soils. Beef suet is the classic grease for seasoning cast iron and can be done in an oven. Back in the 1950s, my grandmother used to use wax coated bread wrappers to wipe her cast iron pans to season them. Not sure if wax paper would work as well. We just wiped our pancake griddle down with a paper towel. Never washed it. Put a little bacon grease on it when it got hot to make the pancakes on. Used a drop of water to tell when it was hot enough. If it skidded it was ready.

    I use couple tablespoons of salt and a moist sponge or a potato will work to and scrub with that then reseason with oil works great and saves water. Enjoy your videos

    I recommend a chainmail scrubber. Gets everything off without hurting your surface with a metal spatula which may pit the metal.

    Love cast iron skillet cooking at camp. Like you said, for cooked on chunks, boil water to remove. Then, use salt and aluminum foil as a scrubber to clean out. Season with a small amount of oil and you're ready for the next cookout. Pete - KI7LIL

    I use very little wash liquid in daily life and I use none in camp....steaming or boiling like this is way good enough and better for the environment. Good video. Mark

      I just finished breakfast and it worked okay, it just lacked the ergonomics the do things like flatten or press the way I need. If it had just a little more curve in the handle, it would be perfect. Now to clean up! (Spatula by Pioneer Woman from Walmart)

    I use a piece of chain mail and salt. Or the spatula and salt. Also, lard keeps real easy in or out of your cooler, has a real high smoke point and imo makes the best non stick on my cast iron. Plus it puts good flavor on the food 😋 and its natural animal fats so it's a lot better than oil. Could also use crisco if you're not into animal products. That keeps as easy as oil and harder to spill😏. Glad I saw this on my suggestions. Thanks for the post.

    Loved the video but still have one question. Cooking outdoors on a rocket stove, my cast iron pot gets a huge amount of soot all over the outside. No matter how much I wash it, the soot stays on there. Beginning to wonder if it is just supposed to be considered part of the pot? Any suggestions? I have a cabin and if I wash the pot in the sink oh boy is that a mess with everything turning black!!!

    I always did what you said. We turned the dog loose on it, then rubbed it with sand to get any remaining food out, a little water, then oil. We used to joke that it was the best cold water could do, and that the dogs name was cold water.

    Here in the interior of Brazil wood stove is common. use ash to clean. It's counterintuitive, but sand is good too.

    Awesome tip and information thanks! I got my first cast iron for Christmas. It has some residue on it from the glue that the wrapping had on it (thanks Walmart/Ozark Trail)... I plan to season it but was thinking I need to get that glue residue off first. Any suggestions?

      When I get a brand new skillet I put it in the oven and put the oven on clean and leave it in there for hour or until its back to bare metal. Then I season it. Be careful this will remove all the seasoning that pan came with but in my opinion if you reseason it properly you will be much happier with it.

      Well depends what your looking for light weight, car camping. Cast iron is awesome but not great for backpacking.

      Careful! If you tend to use it a lot that's fine. However, if only used occasionally, bacon grease can turn rancid after a couple weeks, then you have to re- season from beginning, because that shit will stink, and leave a nasty taste in food as well as chance of food poisoning. Oh, I am "serve safe" certified, are you?

    You scraped it out with a metal spatula and then took a wire brush to it, and you seriously think that soapy water is going to harm the seasoning? Yeah, because every time you clean cast iron with soapy water a baby bunny dies. The soapy water myth is an old wives tale. A properly seasoned cast iron pan has been lightly oiled, then heated to the smoke point, then continued to heat until the smoke stops. The smoke is the carbon burning away and leaving a polymerized coating that makes a non stick surface that is extremely resistant to scratching or wear and, of course, will withstand hot, soapy water.

    I wouldn't use a metal spatula. Either silicon or wood. Won't scratch

    Extra virgin avocado oil has the highest smoke point at 510F. It is also one of the healthiest oils to cook with. You say that you would never cook with the low quality vegetable oil, but you are cooking with it if you are using it to season your pan.

    43 people who don't love and live with dogs gave this a thumbs down...sad. 997 people who live with dogs heard him say "let the dogs lick it out and we're done" and thought, yea sounds about right and give this a thumbs up. Just a little health fact, people who grow up and live with dogs statistically are healthier and get sick less than those who don't have dogs around. Great video as always.

    I keep switching up with my cookware. Cast iron, carbon steel and stainless steel. I think stainless steel works best in the field. I don’t have to worry about rust or seasoning it. Dog licking out and it’s done.

      Whatever works best for you is definitely what you should use. Typically all I ever do is let the dogs lick my cast iron out and then I just put it away, but I was being asked to show cleaning video, but I don't do this very often.

    Thank you for your video, just what I needed. Question: I noticed you use a metal spatula, I assumed that would scratch my cast iron so I got a silicone one. Is metal ok? Or just preference?

      Frank is right. Metal on cast iron is actually better as the more it's scraped the more flat it gets. Some new cast iron will have tiny bumps that you have to slowly smooth out.

      Metal utensils are fine 🙂
      Just Dont Scrape the pan out like he did.
      Use wood or just a piece of burlap for any areas that stick.
      If you scrape it like that it takes away the seasoning that is creating the NONE Stick surface.
      If you have a properly seasoned piece of cast it will almost always wipe clean with a cotton cloth.
      I use pieces of old t-shirts to clean and oil. Then I just toss them in the fire 🔥 😉

    Good video. They say not to use metal utensils in cast iron, I only use wooden ones. Also EVOO is better than veg oils or grease, it don't go rancid on ya.

      Lodge is the only US made cast iron. Everything else comes from China. With all the reports of contaminated products coming from China, makes you think... Lodge is made in Tennessee. Great product and very affordable. I won't buy anything else.

      Olive oil has a really low smoke point, I have to respectfully disagree with you on that one higher smoke point oils usually work best for seasoning.

      Rawhide leather. Better to use silicone trivets for pots.

      steve reist Soap strips the seasoning from your skillet and worse yet, the soap gets pulled into the pores of the cast iron and transfers to your food later.

      I will use a metal spatula on cast iron for flipping eggs, potatoes etc. because I don't trust plastic on a hot iron pan, and wood doesn't work as good for delicate things like flipping whole fried eggs. (at least the wooden ones I've used are too thick to slide under an egg, but I'm sure you can modify them) But I never use metal spatulas for cleaning or scraping stuck on gunk. I have wooden utensils for that.
