Been a huge Bob fan since my buddy Greg played me 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' in the school cafeteria in Grade 9 - the poetry of that song completely blew me away and sent me down the Bob Dylan rabbit hole, where I've been happy ever since. The whole album is brilliant, but this is my favourite track by far - I could listen to this all day, preferably with that day ending in a sunset over the water somewhere. Bob Dylan is a gift for our collective soul - we're infinitely richer for having shared his time on this planet.
I've been down the rabbit hole for the same length of time as you, and I agree with every word about this album and this song. Its richness is utterly mysterious and if I miss hearing it for a couple of days it brings tears to my eyes when I hear it again.

Bob Dylan is a National Treasure, Global perhaps. Always changing and adapting but staying true and real. His lyrics are poetry and his voice is ideal. Like fine wine, better with age. We will still be listening and absorbing him for the continued future.
As much as this album is pure late Dylan gold I think we tend to forget just how brilliant blood on the tracks is maybe we become too familiar with some of his earlier albums surely blood on the tracks is along with his 65-66 trilogy some of the best work by any musician that's not to disregard this album it's fresh and since time out of mind I believe we have all greeted a new dylan album with pure joy and maybe a little over excitement I think history will judge Bob's body of work more objectively but hell it's a damn good album

The sound of the hypnotic accordeon and the timbre of Bob` s voice blows us softly from the keys to the horizon line. His poetic words catch us from behind, from everywhere .What great, great song - there is a lot of spirit on the water...
Nothing against Nick Drake L. Cohen Neil Young Paul Simon Sting Tom Waits Or any songwriter who puts poetry in lyrics. But BOB DYLAN wrote the RULE BOOK of POETIC LYRICAL SONGWRITING. Born. 1941. And releases this new album of all original tracks. No one can top that. Read the lyrics of each of his song on this album. Mind-blowing! You can't write him off. He will always be relevant. The man. The legend. The Bob Dylan.
Bob is the ultimate. The others wouldn't be anything like they are without him. And that's saying a lot, because they're all great songwriters. Dylan is just on another level. His mid 60s and mid 70s stuff especially is just timeless.
I just find this song completely overwhelming, the world stops when he sings. It's almost impossible to keep dry eyes. There's Bob, and then there's other music.
Men get weepy as they get older because of lowered testosterone. Don’t do it. It’s a bad look. This is a fantastic song. Resigned and contemplative. But crying when you listen to it? You are not a woke millennial and please don’t bow down to your age. Most of this album is boring and generic. But this track and Black Rider are original and have a great feel to them.
Love the atmosphere and the mood, the feeling of weariness, resignation and wonder. Each track on the album is more of an impressionistic reverie than a song, and that's what I love about it. One can get lost in the reverie of Key West. Don't over-think it, just experience it. Beautiful.
Man...each of these songs just build and build...and Bob seems to be summing things up, intoning names, places, moments in (and out) of time...I know I've missed 95% of it, but the 5% I got has my hands shaking. 60 years of listening to great music and poetry, but this...this is something else.
It’s like Bob is being driven through America in a dream state, seeing the past and present at the same time, knowing the topography of each ripple in time.
Isn't it amazing? He doesn't have to prove himself or have yet another accomplishment. But he still has thoughts he wants to communicate. And who better to do it? I ordered the album last night!
This has pretty much the same melody as Most Of The Time, another stupendous song! I am watching RTR Bob and I keep coming back to this. We all probably know it by heart by now! Definitely the best part of this terrible year. Things are looking up now! WMB#2 was my favorite of this century, but this might be better. There has never been a musician or songwriter that has achieved what Bob has. He is already immortal. I think he is going to be around for a while and I sure hope so This song seriously takes my breath away.
My favorite song of the album. His timing is incredible and, at the beginning, when he says "confess"........so touching and beautiful. He is a Voice so real, so true

Outstanding Album but this track has me in tears. stand out track -sublime chords .words and mood. Watching sunset go down-down south -land of light -no winters. When you are old you just know-he hits me where very few can. Been there since '62
Western consciousness would not be what it is today without Dylan A life lived with dedication and creative to his core , We owe him so much .!! He never did live in the land of ozz. He was advised to"show a little tenderness" I reckon he just did .

I remember my grandmother dying back in 2020 and listening to this while we were cleaning out her house. We took a break just before we were done, and we ate burgers and sat on milk crates in her empty living room, as i looked out the window at the windblown trees and white sky; it was such a weird and lonely time. This song from his newest album at the time felt like such a comforting breath of fresh air; like everything would be ok. Maybe its just the nostalgia, but this is my personal favorite bob dylan song.
A true privilege to get to listen to new Dylan songs as they are written. Future generations will not get to experience the journey of seeing his changing styles and reflections as they unfold
Fan since 1964, I consider myself very lucky to have connected with his genius so early - it’s fantastic that he’s still producing great music - God Bless him. Of course I’ve been to many of his shows, lastly in Ft Lauderdale about a year ago and LIVE he unbelievable 🙏🏼
Key West is both a real place and a Shangri-la - the place where we go to escape. The cleverness of this dreamy reflective song is that it works on both levels.
Your assessment is rather reductive; the song works on many different levels and it is more than merely clever. It represents the zenith of his art - a (long) lifetime spent perfecting his craft.
Mark H - I just posted my comment yesterday and now reading through all the comments i think it has similarities to your idea...here is the comment i just posted : I get the feeling that Key West and the people and places mentioned in this song are part of a 'lost era' of America. An America that could have been. An America that was slowly being eroded away from the beginning of the 20th century and was truly lost after the murder of JFK. Key West is the 'land of light', 'innocence and purity' 'the enchanted land'. After JFK's murder (it was 'like a human sacrifice') the 'age of the Antichrist' began. The 'soul of a nation been torn away', going 'into a slow decay' now it's 'thirty-six hours past judgement day'. Key West is at once a real place and a mythical place in the mind of the philosoher pirate, a truth seeker and free thinker from the 'wrong side of the railroad tracks'. A place to seek inspiration and love. A retreat, a hiding place, a refuge from the Land Of Oz, Babylon, the ever encroaching post-modern soulless new world where you will lose your mind. Key West, a place where his heroes, predecessors and now dead contemporaries live on and which he will never abandon even it 'might not be the thing to do' ('i'm sticking with you, through and through') because he has his 'feet planted square on the ground'. Key West is the philosoher pirate's Elysian Fields.
When he sings these live it will be like a religious spiritual experience, something quite remarkable.Never has art and soul been so entwined the more i listen the more i marvel !!
I've spent some of my best hours in Key West with the love of my life. She's gone (RIP love), but the memories are forever. Dylan has captured the feel of the place..........'again.

Like a Rolling Stone is a young man's masterpiece. Key West is the masterpiece of an old man. And he has captivated us for all the years in between. I am grateful.
I've grown to love Bob Dylan's output since Time Out of Mind was released.
Beautifully said you must have a poets soul

Lyrics:
McKinley hollered, McKinley squalled
Doctor said, "McKinley, death is on the wall
Say it to me, if you got something to confess"
I heard all about it, he was goin' down slow
I heard it all, the wireless radio
From down in the boondocks, way down in Key West
I'm searching for love, for inspiration
On that pirate radio station
Coming out of Luxembourg and Budapest
Radio signal, clear as can be
I'm so deep in love that I can hardly see
Down on the flatlands, way down in Key West
Key West is the place to be
If you're looking for immortality
Stay on the road, follow the highway sign
Key West is fine and fair
If you lost your mind, you will find it there
Key West is on the horizon line
I was born on the wrong side of the railroad track
Like Ginsberg, Corso and Kerouac
Like Louis and Jimmy and Buddy and all the rest
Well, it might not be the thing to do
But I'm sticking with you, through and through
Down in the flatlands, way down in Key West
I got both my feet planted square on the ground
Got my right hand high with the thumb down
Such is life, such is happiness
Hibiscus flowers, they grow everywhere here
If you wear one, put it behind your ear
Down in the bottom, way down in Key West
Key West is the place to go
Down by the Gulf of Mexico
Beyond the sea, beyond the shifting sand
Key West is the gateway key
To innocence and purity
Key West, Key West is the enchanted land
I've never lived in the land of Oz
Or wasted my time with an unworthy cause
It's hot down here, and you can't be overdressed
China blossoms of a toxic plant
They can make you dizzy, I'd like to help you but I can't
Down in the flatlands, way down in Key West
Well, the fish tail ponds and the orchid trees
They can give you that bleeding heart disease
People tell me I ought to try a little tenderness
On Newton Street, Bayview Park
Walking in the shadows after dark
Down under, way down in Key West
I played Gumbo Limbo spirituals
I know all the Hindu rituals
People tell me that I'm truly blessed
Bougainvillea blooming in the summer, in the spring
Winter here is an unknown thing
Down in the flat lands, way down in Key West
Key West is under the sun, under the radar, under the gun
You stay to the left, and then you lean to the right
Feel the sunlight on your skin, and the healing virtues of the wind
Key West, Key West is the land of light
Wherever I travel, wherever I roam
I'm not that far before I come back home
I do what I think is right, what I think is best
History Street off of Mallory Square
Truman had his White House there
East bound, West bound, way down in Key West
Twelve years old, they put me in a suit
Forced me to marry a prostitute
There were gold fringes on her wedding dress
That's my story, but not where it ends
She's still cute, and we're still friends
Down on the bottom, way down in Key West
I play both sides against the middle
Trying to pick up that pirate radio signal
I heard the news, I heard your last request
Fly around, my pretty little Miss
I don't love nobody, give me a kiss
Down on the bottom, way down in Key West
Key West is the place to be
If you're looking for immortality
Key West is paradise divine
Key West is fine and fair
If you lost your mind, you'll find it there
Key West is on the horizon line

Bob Dylan is a National Treasure, Global perhaps. Always changing and adapting but staying true and real. His lyrics are poetry and his voice is ideal. Like fine wine, better with age. We will still be listening and absorbing him for the continued future.
Global treasure!
He certainly still has IT. I'm 72 and this challenges "Blood on the Tracks." Amazing stuff.
Blood on the tracks,New York sessions were better, before it got messed with, Still my fav album though. I did like Street Legal, maybe because it was my first.

I remember my grandmother dying back in 2020 and listening to this while we were cleaning out her house. We took a break just before we were done, and we ate burgers and sat on milk crates in her empty living room, as i looked out the window at the windblown trees and white sky; it was such a weird and lonely time. Maybe its just the nostalgia, but this is my personal favorite bob dylan song.

I do think that "Key West" is the best song on the album.
Bob's the best there ever was and ever will be ❤
There’s Dylan then there’s everybody else
this song is for some reason really special
When he sings these live it will be like a religious spiritual experience, something quite remarkable.Never has art and soul been so entwined the more i listen the more i marvel !!

I've spent some of my best hours in Key West with the love of my life. She's gone (RIP love), but the memories are forever. Dylan has captured the feel of the place..........'again.
