The club never recovered after Souness was brought in terrible appointment

When you look at the first 4 games, it was 2-1 against Middlesbrough in the last few seconds and Hasselbaink s goal should have been ruled out, in the Tottenham game they scored maybe their goal of the season, and although it doesn’t show you in this there was another blatant handball in the box to stop an unmarked Shearer heading in, no penalty, unlucky again, the Norwich game it was raining and it was Shay Given who made a mistake at 2-0 up and in the Aston Villa game their keeper handled the ball outside the box at 2-1 up and nothing happened again, you could argue they were unlucky to not have won all 4 games really or certainly 3 and it cost Bobby Robson his job. They had a good run after Graeme Souness took over but it would have happened if Robson had still been there anyway, Robson should have been putting his foot down with one or two of the younger players, he was trying to bring in younger players as the likes of Shearer, Speed were getting older, Shearer was still scoring goals but his goals to game average was dropping and they couldn’t keep relying on him all the time, he scored a few goals in Europe against average teams but he only scored seven league goals all season, there were problems happening away from the football, younger players getting into scraps but Robson hadn’t lost the players at all, their were conceding a few more goals but Jonathan Woodgate had been sold when Robson didn’t necessarily want to sell him and a replacement hadn’t been bought, the previous season with Woodgate in the team they’d kept 18 clean sheets and only lost 8 times in the league, in fact the day Robson was sacked, he thought the meeting with Shepherd was going to be to discuss buying a centre half according to his book but the impetus had come from Douglas Hall to sack him. This was going to be Bobby Robson’s last season, his contract was finished at the end of the season and he would be 72 and he knew he wasn’t going to go on forever, i do think the end of 2004/5 would have been the right time for him to go, the club should have kept him to the end of the season as planned and took their time to get a top replacement, Souness did have a reasonably good record as a manager, he’d won trophies at Rangers after they’d been struggling but that was many years earlier, he’d won the league cup at Blackburn not long before he went to Newcastle but he was struggling in the league before he left there and times were changing, he was too much sergeant major on the training pitch, they started getting injured in training all the time and most of his signings were terrible, selling Aaron Hughes and signing Boumsong, Babayaro and Amdy Faye was where he lost me although it’s questionable how helpful Freddy Shepherd was to him at times and Bobby Robson was beginning to have problems with Shepherd towards the end, he was too hands on in the football decisions instead of trusting his manager. Sacking Robson and replacing him with Souness set the club back badly. The start of the end for Souness was the way they lost the quarter final of the UEFA cup from 2-0 up in the second leg.

I think it’s baffling how Bobby had to fight to spend money and Souness came in and they give him a fortune to spend on crap. It’s like the board used Robson to get where they wanted then shit on him, taking over control of transfers etc that’s where it went wrong

12:18 imagine if Steve Bruce became manager back then lol, but ya cant sack someone like Bobby Robson after only 4 prem games in, he wouldve easily got em to kick on and have a good season.

thing is though, and hear me out, I think at the time Bruce was a good manager however I think no he has gotten used to a certain style and way of football we see now but you never know with the facilities we had at the time. Could be very different now

Second worst decision in Newcastles history. The first was appointing Graeme Souness. God knows what they were thinking you just had to look at the state of Blackburn Rovers when he left them and worse still they played his Blackburn the week after Robson was sacked. He ruined them spent a hell of a lot of money on crap putting them on high wages and fell out with everyone.

Souness did worse he dismantled Sir Bobbys team and made it worse signing players that weren’t nowhere near as good
