    As with any major release, we sometimes become aware of corner cases after significant public testing. The Thunderbird team will wait to enable automatic updates -- and publish the 115 Flatpak -- until we’re confident no such issues exist. Having said that, we're not yet seeing any critical bugs that would prevent wide distribution. But please realize this is done out of an abundance of caution and respect for our users. We're as eager to put this in your hands as you are to start using it.

    You can't blame the Thunderbird devs for it not being in the Arch or OpenSUSE or whatever repo as they don't control that. It's weird they haven't pushed the new version to Flathub as they do control that.

    I don't know why it took this long this time. Maybe there are big changes in the background and they needed time to update. Arch took a whopping weak or so until it finally reached the stable branch. We talk about Arch! If they don't have it, you can't expect the rest of the world would.

    Don't know if this is the case for all distros but on Gentoo at least it's being held back because apparently it becomes difficult or impossible to downgrade without losing your whole profile once you use the new version.

    • @MH_VOID
      @MH_VOID ปีที่แล้ว

      In my limited experience with Gentoo, stuff lags behind there significantly. I was waiting for the 6.4 kernel (which I needed for my hardware) and while Arch already had like 6.4.3 or something, I had to unmask the kernel to even be able to use the 6.4 kernel on Gentoo - even after it was officially released. I guess they were doing a lot of testing

    • @cluesagi
      @cluesagi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MH_VOID In the case of kernels it's Gentoo's policy to only mark the LTS versions as stable. Gentoo distinguishes between 'testing' and 'masked', where testing usually means it's probably fine and you can use them if you want, but they're not confident enough to mark it as stable yet; whereas 'masked' is something you really shouldn't use. The newer mainline kernel versions are testing; the new Thunderbird is masked.

    You're video is a bit too long for the purpose, and making it a bit shorter would have reached more people, that's the only shame. But the its content is useful and the feedback you're giving it's precious, and the fact you are doing it because you care comes through. Don't understimate the power of your contribution. I got it early on my home PC where I use Arch by getting from the testing repo. Like he said in the video, it is released officially in Arch now.
    On KDE Neon, my work laptop, I tried the snap version but it did not read my existing profile. I'm not sure if it's because it is a pre-release snap or because snaps just don't use the same profile space.
    I ended up doing what you said which was download the tar.xz, extract it and move the extracted thunderbird directory to /opt as well as setting up the desktop file and symlinking to /usr/local/bin. However, thunderbird installed like this does not read my existing profile (just like the snap version). So, I'm still waiting for the official release. If it was in the mozilla ppa, that would be great.
