Scribing Mercedes Vito Camper Van Kitchen DIY | The Carpenter's Daughter

  • Hi everyone,
    We've finally picked up our camper van kitchen, wardrobe and bed and we needed to scribe the back to ensure it fit snuggly in to our Mercedes Vito's tapered design.
    But to make sure we didn't make any mistakes, I asked my Dad (the carpenter) to direct and watch me just in case I made any costly mistakes and this is how we did it.
    We thought the finish was perfect, but if you think you'd do it differently, then please comment below to help any future viewers below. Note: I am not a professional, but a girl who wants to do things for herself.
    I hope this helps and feel free to also ask any questions and good luck!

    Thanks for "describing" the "scribing!" so much easier when you see it done. I owe ya one for that . Love it.

    great tip that is for the cupboards! I am converting my transit, all home built and I have always struggled with the issue you have had with the cupboards, any more wood working tips like that would be ace!

    I need to finish the build on the rear of my van and I cannot wait to share it with you. Lots of jobs to do on it still, tomorrow is wiring the rear lights. I like the finish on your kitchen, mine is a crazy orange colour.

      Thanks and sounds exciting! How many lights did you pick from Raynes? We were worried 4 might not be enough but am surprised how bright they are. You'll definitely have to film a video of your camper to show us!

      I hear you, Adventures With Rosy! The thought of cutting something so precious was so scary and couldn't find one youtube tutorial on scribing. Luckily my Dad knew a couple of handy tricks so I could pass on :)

      Are they still going? They ended up cutting the the sink's worktop hole wrong due to them changing their sink range, then had the cheek to say along the lines, "can't your dad sort it... he's a carpenter". I didn't pay nearly 3k to get my Dad involved. They sorted it eventually but were terrible at replying to emails.

    You guys are one of the only ones I've heard talk about weight. Everyone has these crazy nice build outs; but no one takes into consideration how much that effects your gas mileage. My van gets 10mpg in the city-16 mpg on the hwy; weight has always been a consideration of mine. Thank you for addressing it.

    The best lube I've found for hand/power saws/planes etc, is 'Back to black' car bumper restorer, it's not as dear as actual silecone spray. It's so good, that the can will slip out of your hand!

      The best lube I've found for a straight hand saw is a Lion battery operated jigsaw.

    For about a century now boat builders have been using what's called a "joggle stick". I used it to build my boat and once you do it a few times you will honestly not understand how anyone can do curves without one. It's dead accurate and super fast. Look up "joggle stick" for a time honoured traditional measuring tool.

      We bought them from majestic campers. It's a lightweight ply with veneer. They were also available from eBay too.

    Who's a clever girl then.
    I used to be a boatbuilder and when fitting a bulkhead or wardrobe like you done the bottom had to be scribed as well good job when it works but a nightmare when it didn't.lol.

    Was your bed also from majestic campers? Thanks

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but wouldn't use them again. They were terrible at replying to emails and messed up a kitchen worktop order with sink cutting service. We paid a lot of money to them and they turned around and said "couldn't your Dad fix it as he's carpenter"... I was furious as I paid them, not my Dad.
      Just looked at reviews of them this morning and saw the same old "not replying" rubbish.

    I cant believe you used an hand saw to scribe the cabinets in. Normally you'd chip the laminate with this method, your braver than I am. Personally I probably would use a multitool. Good job though well done.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm... I've never had chipping with a hand saw and masking tape. Jigsaws and such, yes.

      Firstly, how on earth is someone going to learn anything if that rule existed? There'd be no teaching hospitals for starters. And it's not like I'd never used a saw before. I've grown up with them.
