In the 1950s, a group of ranchers in Idaho were baffled when their sheep gave birth to lambs with only one eye. Mystified by these cyclops sheep, they called in scientists from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate. What happened? Tien Nguyen describes how, decades later, one team of biologists stumbled upon the answer.

That pun at the end was eye opening.

Carlos Fuentes Stop, oh mu god xD
Yeah, I was blind-sided by that pun.
My Asian cousin approves this.
All those in favour of more vision puns, say "eye"
A scientist lived with sheep for 3 summers? Talk about persistence.
I wonder if the scientist counted the sheep before sleeping
He had alot of fun counting them before sleeping😂
And the irony is that very few of us know about these scientists while most of us know everything about Kardashians.
Not even so. There anthropologists that will spend 5 to 6 years in the habitat of their specimen.
+Bonny Monstrosity Talk about dedication to science!
My parents are sheep farmers. On April 1st 1994 one of the lambing workers went running into the house to find my dad and tell him a one eyed lamb had been born. My dad didn't believe him thinking it was an April fool's joke, eventually the worker persuaded my dad to go outside and sure enough there was a one eyed lamb sitting in the barn. The lamb survived about 3 minutes before it died. Not sure what to do with it my dad decided to cut the lamb's head off and preserve it in formaldehyde. Now every year we have a birthday party for it where we have friends over, get drunk and only eat eye ball shaped or related foods. But I suppose contacting scientist from the department of agriculture would have been a good idea too.
Thats terrifying yet ..so interesting i wanna see the head now and one eye festivities
Imagine waking up drunk in the ceiling with rests of food in the tables
@@gebermotta2558 imagine getting really drunk and waking up the next morning only to find the jar empty and the remains of the sheep head on the table.
Also that day was April fools
Animals in general that are born Cyclops like die almost immediately after birth
Not sure why im the case of this video they survived
So if a cyclop closes its eye, is it considered as winking of blinking?
Both?
:O!
Winking is intentional while blinking is doing it without thought
Nofan Felani see that's a real question

I love how this style makes the cyclops sheep look cute instead of creepy
Sheep's eyes already creep me out. A cyclops sheep would be horrific!

I'm morbidly curious... but as I always say, "morbid curiosity killed the cat due to complications from chronic insomnia, caused by 2 straight weeks of nightmares and intrusive mental images."
Dissapointed that you didn't mention that the proteins coded for by the hedgehog gene is actually called the Sonic Hedgehog protein (yes, really) , but a fantastic and thought provoking video as usual. Well done Ted-ed.
That explains the S in SHH.
Terrkas0 Indeed (-:

Does that gene gotta go fast?
The pun. The only reason they made this video.

Don't avoid the truth TED-Ed- people deserve to know that the hedgehog gene SHH is short for Sonic Hedgehog because it was the nineties and those scientists (albeit not the ones who originally discovered hedgehog but the 3 hedgehog genes in the hedgehog family for vertebrates) were The Worst jokers.
It wasn't a joke, the scientist named it Sonic hedgehog because that was what his kid wanted it to be named.

Shoutout to the sheep farmers who inadvertently gave us a treatment for cancer by wanting to explore the science behind what was happening to their sheep.
they probably only had it investigated because it was hurting their profits...maybe the wool the cyclops sheep grew (if they even lived long enough to) wasn't appropriate for usage? maybe no slaughterhouse would process a one-eyed lamb/sheep for human consumption? While you call it 'the hedgehog gene' it's more appropriately called by it's proper name (as indicated by the letters SHH) Sonic the HedgeHog gene - the joys of being a scientist is that you get to name your new finds. Always do good. And this is very good.
not sure torturing animals (which they kind of glossed over in this video, but it was done, and hundreds, perhaps thousands of animals suffered) - even in the name of 'science' or hoping to create a new medication - is "doing good"

Well its misinformation
The gene is the sonic the hedgehog gene and it makes the sonic the hedgehog protein
@@ConstantChaos1 Exactly! They should do their research
That's interesting..! It also kind of explain why these sheep died quickly, since tissus were not created in a proper way. I'm wondering though, there is a recent case of a one eye goat in India, which still lives to many people's surprise. Is it thought that this goat case is related to cyclopamine as well?
Likely not, or if it was it was ingested minimally and only st certian times as to only effect eye formation
Unexpectedly, sheeps with one eye are scary than normal.
-Farmers see one eyed lambs
-“Ewe’ve gotta be kidding me!”
So are cyclop humans possible?
99NEPtune99 ™ good question
99NEPtune99 ™ no-one would try it though, whether it works or not.
99NEPtune99 ™ with genetic engineering but what would be the point?
don't google images for it
Yes it is possible. There have been children born with cyclophia, a rare birth defect.
Eye see
Alan Qin o
DID YOU KNOW THAT
*eye see*
NOW YOU KNOW
The thing from real pictures that surprised me the most was that it's not a small, normal sized eye. It is HUGE. Like the cyclops of legend, the eye is always pictured really big? It's the same for these sheep. Which makes me curious about the legend. Maybe the cyclops myth was based off a real person, very tall with one large eye. Nothing mystical, just.....tweaked genes.
Nah, cyclops legends were inspired by people who found mammoth skulls and mistook the nasal cavity for an eye socket.
well, the narrator mentions it prevents *separate* eyes from forming, so perhaps the one is so large because it's actually a combination of the tissue which was supposed to/would normally be 2?
Wasnt the gene called "sonic hedgehog"?
Yes
Yeah that's why they shorthanded it to SHH even in this video.

umm why did they call the dept of agriculture instead of someone from the veterinary dept or genetic dept? (not sure if genetic dept is a thing but you get the point)

Because sheep are plants duh.
Do you know what agriculture means?
The word agriculture includes rearing animals for food as well as cultivating crops.
