    The best part of the Lev dinner scene was her saying, "I'm so embarrassed. I'm not a real person yet."

    It's absolutely heartbreaking how we are conditioned to value friendship less and less when we get older.

    I don't think Frances comes across as any less mature than the others. Sophie depends on her boyfriend, kowtows to the dominant ideology, gives up her career and rejects Frances - twice. Benji claims he's writing for SNL but has no job and lives off his parents' money. Frances doesn't do that. She doesn't receive support from her parents but eventually realises - after several setbacks - that she can't fantasise about being a famous dancer and she compromises and works out what she is good at - which is hinted earlier in the film when she works with young kids in that dreamlike white room with the light streaming through the windows.

      Yeah but all those other things are “socially acceptable “ and the norm,Frances is unapologetically her

      @@graceward7231 She's nicer. It takes her a while to work out what 'unapologetically her' is, which is why I enjoy the movie

      frances is aware of her state of flux more than the other characters..she is more vulnerable but has the best chance of adult fulfillment..once she gets there. fun fact: the film was funded by sophie’s dad..sting..hence all her choices. ( and her looks) are continually complimented..in the script. she hasnt acted since..speaking of the betwixt state.

    I watched another video explaining how it is such a practical film. We've seen films telling us that we shouldn't be afraid of pursuing our dreams. But this film reminds us that our dreams sometimes may never come true and it's okay. Rather, we shouldn't be afraid to go for other ventures. Though most of the cast is white and the characters seem to come from rather well-off backgrounds, it has a universal appeal and can be hard hitting.

    This movie was extremely relate-able with Francas awkward moments. The part where she was at dinner with people and she kept having word vomits. I can see myself in her so much. I feel like everyone can relate to second hand embarrassment or cringy feeling you get when social awkward things happen.

    • @usualavantgasp

      That was so clever of u to mentioned secondhand embarrassment because I think if you want to experienced such feeling, Frances Ha is the best representation of it

    I just saw the movie and thought Frances actually was in love with Sophie, a feeling that Sophie never reciprocated. And that last scene at Frances' dance where Frances and Sophie lock eyes and grin at each other ... in a "party"...shows us their "secret world" of things they never told each other.

      I agree. Especially when she references that her life feels like a Virginia Woolf novel that she can't find the name for. I think it's Mrs. Dalloway. Clarissa still pines for her ex-lover Sally, but in a society of strict heteronormativity, they married to different men. However, Clarissa still reminices about their times, holding on to them. The entire novel is Clarissa living in the past. Though Mrs. Dalloway's main plot is far from just her relationship with Sally, I couldn't get the parallels out of my mind after she referenced Virginia Woolf!

      I guess it was platonic. Friendship is always underestimated. People kinda use friends till they find a mate for life. And when that happened for Sophie she didn't mind losing her.

    Greta Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay with Baumbach.

  • @litappleblossom1314
    @litappleblossom1314 4 ปีที่แล้ว +109

    This was a great review, but the movie wasn't Baumbach's vision alone, as Greta Gerwig co-wrote it. Her contribution should be more emphasized here. Baumbach said he did more experimentation during the creative process for Frances Ha; as his full creative partner, Gerwig pushed him out of his comfort zone.
    Unfortunately, she wasn't ready to direct yet, but I think she certainly could have directed Frances Ha if she had wanted to.

      If you watch Lady Bird and then watch Frances Ha, it feels like its Greta Gerwig's life told in both movies

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If you watch Marriage Story, I can clearly see how much Baumbach was back into his comfort zone in this one. He, alone, lacks understandment of the female point of view.

    i feel like although the film is in black and white, you can absolutely see the colour in each scene because of the acting, dialogue, and performance. even though we aren’t shown any vibrant or indicating colours, you can still clearly see the atmosphere of each scene and what emotion is felt.
    of course, the black and white also contributes to the film feeling both like old french cinema, and modern american lifestyle. it was such a perfect way to make this movie; it enhanced every emotion and message, and frances’ character too! i could talk forever about this film, i just love it.

    One of my favorite movies ever! I saw a lot of reviews and analyses and watched the movie a couple times. What makes it so special in my opinion is that one can interpret it in so many ways. Because there is so much going on.. growing up, chasing dreams, failing, friendship... Everytime I watch it I relate to Frances in a different way and discover new aspects. It's like the movie is changing while I am changing.

    Most of the movie was good, but what I didn't like was how everything easily fell into place at the end. It was so nice and clean despite her reluctance, immaturity and behaviour. The job, and the guy was simply there waiting around for her. The happy ending didn't feel earned for me.

    As a millennial this movie is way to real for me. This movie is standing in front of your bathroom mirror and examining every perceived flaw you have. Every pimple every black head every hair out of place.

    Love this essay, and definitely relate to this as a millennial (although there were a few inconsistencies - Sophie actually moved in with her friend, not Patch, during the beginning of the movie; her love monologue was during a dinner party with her dance friend. I don't mean to be nitpicky, but I think the background of the two scenes are important)

    I saw it for the first time yesterday and I LOVED it. Just a funny, charming, at times bleak yet relatable story with charming and likeable characters. Gerwig was fantastic in the role and I enjoyed the minor characters as well especially Sophie and Benji. The dialogue I loved as well. After watching Roma I did feel the B&W was similar in a sense despite being a different film to what Frances Ha did in using it despite both being different in length, editing and style. I did get vibes of Manhattan (1979) when watching Frances Ha.

  • @manzell

    After watching Greenberg, there's simply no way Baumbach did anything more than put his stamp of approval on the Frances Ha script as a solid for the mistress he left his newborn for. That's a Gerwig jam through and through.

  • @6BURG9
    @6BURG9 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I struggle with Noah Baumbach movies a bit. While I do feel that the themes of this movie are universally relatable, the characters aren’t relatable at all to me. Maybe because I’m not a New York bohemian I guess? I just find the writing to be very pretentious. What’s funny is that while the characters in The Squid and the Whale are actively more pretentious than Frances, I like them way more because the movie knows they are pretentious, if that makes sense? Can’t stand Kicking and Screaming. Lukewarm on this one. Really like S+W and Meyerowitz Stories.

      Charlie Dawson If you're looking for a beginner level camera, I'd advise you get a model from the Canon Rebel series. For $400 you'll have to buy a pretty old model and likely second hand if you want the other basic essentials like batteries, SD cards, and lenses.
