    Very interested in this game. Watched a lot of TH-camrs playing it. Wasn't satisfied. You, however, have convinced me to stick to this series. You appear to be very knowledgeable about the mechanics and have a great way of explaining them. It was really painful to see all the other big TH-camrs completely butchering the production chain walktime, ornament placement and basic logic. It's really not relaxing when you constantly feel the urge to yell at the screen. Thank you so much for picking up this game. Loved your play style in Anno, can't wait for the new addon. May you evaluate if the smoke house is better place near the meat source or the market. And the poo collector eventually between the farm (consumer) and houses (source) ... 😇

    • @WhatDarrenPlays
      @WhatDarrenPlays  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The smokehouse could be a bit closer! Next episode i’ll be moving food around a little bit once the farm gets going.
      For the compost, it takes many years to get compost from waste, and it gets added to farms very quickly, so I don’t think its too important to have it near farms as it isn’t a constant supply. Definitely would be more optimal I suppose, but its a very, very small issue to deliver it. Also there’s other fertile farmland on the opposite side, so the compost may end up being inbetween the two eventually.

    • @wastedwatts
      @wastedwatts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WhatDarrenPlays Later you can move the compost yard without losing any, so placement in early game is basically a non issue, unless close to shelter.

      I ordered a i9 8GO computre with a nice graphic card just to play this game (my old one is really old anyway). Delivery by the end of september. I found you through your anno series and absolutely love the way you build. I find a lot of other creators playthroughs all start to look the same with the grids, but you really take the time to make things look nice and organic. This game looks really good and being super difficult is kinda a nice change since a lot of these types of games tend to get really easy once you snowballl resources. Well I eagerly await your next episode :)

    • @wastedwatts
      @wastedwatts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you may find getting the town center to the next tier is a bit of a challenge is placing stuff in specific ways can be difficult with a tight focus on efficiency and influence on other options. Proper grouping within the space provided gets to be a "better move that to ..." game.

    Hi @Darren. Awesome episode again....keep it coming. Can't wait to start plying alongside you tomorrow. NOTE: I think for early game, setting up 3 farms sized at 5x5 is most optimal. This will also allow you to get a greater variety of food and allow field maintenance in the 3 year cycle.....

    • @WhatDarrenPlays
      @WhatDarrenPlays  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think early on food variety isnt that important- I’m at 100% happiness it seems with almost everyone and provide meat + vegetables + berries most of the time. If you’re trying to get to Tier 3 houses, I think yhey need even more food variety so would definitely need wheat/bread and other vegetables too!
      Not 100% sure but just my experience so far!

    • @wastedwatts
      @wastedwatts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhatDarrenPlays Yes, you are correct about food variety is needed for Tier 2 and beyond. Likely the reason farms are offered in Tier 1 since it takes a while to get production going after the many thousands of man hours to clear the spot by farmers, which are assigned by field size and current population. Later, the game often provides more villagers to bring the general labor force number back up a bit. Most of the farmers will wear little straw hats, which is kind of cute.

      True, walls are needed for all sorts of reasons, and one is to keep the deer out of the fields, unless you want hunters to take advantage of the meat, hide, and tallow they provide. The catch is the hunters may just ignore them, which would require you to do some fencing and may even require you to click on the hunter and right click on a deer.

    Definitely the best of the FF playthroughs. This game has now gone from being "Thinking about it" to "Wishlisted" and now saving up for this, instead of the new Settlers game ( due to many of its badly thought out ideas ruining the entire "settler" design ). Really love the attention to detail, the significant changes to surroundings by Season, and the sheer size of the tech tree. Admittedly, there are a few trades that could be placed there, like the "Smelter" for Iron, Tin, Copper etc, but while the Trader sorts that out via Money, then maybe it works out well. :)

    I can't be sure as I have never played this game, but usually on a market price indicator in the game, the green/red let's you know what to buy/sell. So in the example you showed, that green arrow indicates it is best to sell him weapons at this time (you are earning more than it is worth), while a red arrow would indicate a good time to buy)

    • @wastedwatts
      @wastedwatts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are close, the green dot indicates a high price is offered, or required to purchase that item. A red dot indicates below average price to buy, or sell. The greater than and lesser than arrow tell you if the merchant wants to buy, or only sell. There are other details, but that is enough for now.

      So, I take it all or most of your villagers died right off, maybe before year 2? I know that feeling and it was either not enough housing fast enough, or a lack of firewood. Of course food can be an issue, but that is normally a year 2 disaster issue.

  • @wastedwatts
    @wastedwatts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some of the things you don't want to sell through the Trading Post is stone, tools, and food since it isn't always easy to gave enough gold to buy those items before you run out. The clothing, weapons, and hides tend to be things you want a good surplus of also to meet the needs of your villagers since they don't like to get cold, hunt without weapons and ammo, or go barefoot.

    A player can use hunters to search the map, but best to do with a pair since you never know what you may find. The are also good in pairs, or as a party of 3 to chase early raiders that survive the attack. By following the raiders, while focused on one with a right click so the cursor changes to a sword, they will reveal a lot of the map until attacked.

    The Trading Post needs to have stuff in storage already, before the merchant wagon shows up to get full benefit of sells and purchases. That way your Trading Post villager will have stuff available and not need to go get stuff to offer before the merchant leaves your town. The merchant does stay a while, but sometimes not long enough to do everything you want, or can.

    Great video, as always... Really like how that game looks. I just have the feeling that the "readability" of some of the buildings is not all that high (what I mean is, sometimes it's hard to see which building you're looking at just by looking at their appearance/model, I could imagine it getting a little convoluted once the settlement grows). What has your experience been so far?

    • @wastedwatts
      @wastedwatts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whenever you need to identify a structure, go into the build menu and click on it. You don't have to place it, but you can move it around and look for some that look the same. Later, once you have clicked on a building you have already placed on the map and it has been constructed, click on it and move your view around to see any others like it. They will show a white circle around them (work space) and the building, or object will also be outlined in white. Click on each one as needed to check for a villager working, or placing if one or more is missing.

      At some point you will notice small, low yield trees popping up all over the map after harvesting the mature ones as long as you don't use the clear option. Use the harvest option if you want stuff to come back after a year, or two, and then takes a number of years to provide a reasonable yield. Once catch, any structures placed tend to force a clear on that spot, so the lot size removes anything that was there permanently.

    • @wastedwatts
      @wastedwatts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure why you would think the grid is not realistic since most towns and cities use this idea early on, and run the roads as they need to due to cost getting around obstacles. Be aware, it is not a good idea to make long stretches' of roads right off, but do a patchwork of short sections. Later you will understand the wisdom of short sections linked together when you go to change them, or upgrade them.

    Hmmm, not a fan of building homes to have people move in. It's silly. Newcomers would build their own houses. The houses would reflect the ability of the family moving in; their skills at building, their kindness as to get others helping, and the location they choose. Settlements grew organically not in pre-planned grids. ( In fact, the grid city plan was an American concept.) Also, farmers placed their farms, lumberjack chose where to set up their mill, etc. The idea that the player selects everything makes all these city-building games exactly alike, only difference being cosmetic/ aesthetics.

      What you’re describing though is a much higher level of gameplay here you make extremely broad decisions and the citizens live their lives and do different things, sotlrt out their own jobs and more. It could be interesting but I imagine it would be fairly dull if you didnt have anything to do other than watching the town develop like a simulation, unless done on a massive scale so you always had some decisions to make.
      Anyways, this is of course just a gamified version of building a town if you made all the choices and your people were basicaly blank slates that always do what you say and can do anything.

      Actually, your opinion is off a bit about housing. Towns and cities have building codes and issue permits for planned structures. That has been how towns are managed for many thousands of years. Part of the reason Roman was so .... arranged, even though their inspectors and permit folk had a lot to learn about urban and city development. Remember the Greeks, or know anything about their ideas of town and city development? One thing to note in the game, the houses start out as a timber frame, but end up as a long cabin, which is a tad off from either style of structure. Likely the programming was reduced to minimal animation since the game does suffer from odd animation sequences. Also notice the town has builders who do all the construction and you can adjust how many do the work, but likely at a sacrifice to the number of common laborers.

      LOL, likely not so dumb, or dump, heheheee. This game already has most of us scratching our heads over how stuff is suppose to work, hence the reason for sharing insights by TH-cam postings. I can imagine the frustration level would be way too high if we didn't have "how to" videos to watch. Sort of like ARK survival evolved.
