I've walked in the Peak District for over 60 years but never done that trail. Ladybower was being built when I was born in 1941. It's definitely on my to-do list now. If you drive from Bamford station to the Ashopton viaduct through Bamford village you certainly get a sense of the incline that the train had to cope with.
Nice video we was up there in October 2018 when the res was empty and we walked out To the ruins of the old church look forward to your next instalment
If you are interested in the Bamford and Howden railway and the construction of the 3 dams I really do recommend you read walls across the valley by Brian Robinson which is a really in depth read of how the dams were planned and came to be built and the navies that built them, has a great pictorial content too.
Even though plugholey things make me nervous I`ve often wondered what it would look like straight down - I now know and it doesn`t make me feel any easier, lol.
In the 60s when I was growing up in Thornhill - I knew the 'Thornhill Trail' as the 'Track' obviously a local reference to the railway. I also remember the railway bridge walls where the 'Thornhill Trail' crossed Carr Lane going up to Thornhill - finally demolished in the 60s. Final memory from the 70s and a useless bit of information - before Ladybower Dam wall was raised in height, strengthened and regrassed in the early 90s - I saw the grass on the embankment being mown by a man using a Flymo on a rope pulling it up and down - man at the top worked his way across!
I see why you love the area it is stunning. Many thanks for that interesting relaxing vlog. Really looking forward to the next part. Take care and stay safe in this difficult time.
A number of the locos used on the construction of the top dams where named after the Japanese heroes of the Japan v Russia war(1905)for which Britain supplied battleships to both sides.
Thank you so much i really needed that Ant ..including the grid footage 56312...we are determind after the madness to go walking round here thanks for the inspiration mate stay safe Frank & Lee.
Love that area, must get back soon. Fascinating B & Ws, a bit of history brought to life plus a quick shot of a Grid, nice!! As usual Ant a compact and interesting vlog 👍👍👍
Great video. I was up there 2 years ago and walked the reservoirs- so worth it. Thank you for you great videos and good luck with all the uncertainty at the moment. Ed
That was glorious, the scenery was really something to behold. It appears that Derbyshire, like Nottinghamshire, have made use of their old railway lines and made them into named trails, I wish Lincolnshire were forward thinking like that. It's also nice to get 'out and about' if only in video form because of the lockdown. I've got plenty of exploring planned but like the rest of us I've got to wait for the nod from Boris!!!
I've driven that line for years and know the area well, just to let you know the sidings where you started, deep in the undergrowth there are still buildings, huts., well explained👍..
I always like the archive railway pictures you include. Have you seen www.28dayslater.co.uk/threads/ladybower-reservoir-overflow-derbyshire-aug-2018.114398/#post-1265461

You are right ...you can never tire of it. 😊
Interesting , to see the reservoir full, compared to when visiting the area in summer.

@@TrekkingExploration It would be great to meet up, we could celebrate the end of this virus situation with a good old explore.
My Dad was an office boy in the site office.
