How to drive on 3 lane roundabouts

  • How to successfully drive on 3 lane roundabouts is what we are covering today. Most roundabouts have 2 lanes on them, but when you are confronted with a roundabout that has 3 lanes on it you must still remember the roundabout rules.
    Still use your routine on the approach to the roundabout(mirrors, signal, position, speed and look)M.S.P.S.L. If you want to move across from centre lane to left lane, always check your left mirror before moving and even check your left side passenger window to see what's there. The same would be repeated if you were in the right lane on the roundabout and was wanting to come across to the left.
    Know where you are going on the roundabout and know which lane to enter onto the roundabout and which lane to exit the roundabout.
    Be aware of bad drivers on large roundabouts that speed past you on possibly both sides and be aware of drivers who drift into your lane on the roundabout when entering the roundabout.

    What a lot of drivers overlook is that where lane1 on approach is left turn only it expires at the first exit. Straight ahead traffic needs to move left into the new lane 1 as the left turners should have gone. Not moving left puts you in conflict with the right turners

    What about roundabouts that have two lanes on approach, but three lanes on exit with no clear road markings or signage for who can exit on the middle lane? Further back from the approach, there are road markings saying both lanes can go straight ahead, however there are no more markings at the entrance or clear lane lines on the roundabout dictating which lane can exit where. This is important because the three lane exit immediately leads to another round about where the left lane on approach is only for turning left (A1 sliproad), the middle lane is for straight or turning right, and the right lane of course also to turn right. (For reference to look at the road on google maps, its the A1114 that leads to a double roundabout that leads to A695 (Scotswood Bridge) or A1 sliproad at Gateshead/Newcastle.

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a good point. Unfortunately I don’t have any roundabouts within 20 miles like you describe. But if I did I would definitely record a video on it.

    Hello, Exactly like this roundabout is the Prince of Wales interchange roundabout in Sheffield, but with a small difference,. The right lane have the arrow just ahead, Is it that lane for go ahead and right as well or just for going right?
    I've seen many roundabout like this but its confusing when seeing a right lane with ahead arrow.

    Thanks for the video. My problem is that in busy traffic you don't know what lane to be in on approach to the roundabout until it's too late because you're too far back from the arrows on the ground and/or signage obscured by vehicles in front.
    Of course if you drive the route regularly you will get to know and needless to say the layout of one roundabout could be completely different from the next.
    What is your advice in this situation?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  ปีที่แล้ว

      What catches lots of people out is which lane to do ahead.
      If on a dual carriageway approach in the left lane but keep the white lane dividers close to your side as you reach the roundabout. It will 99 percent of the time lead you into the lane to go ahead.
      If the roundabout has no right turn, then the right lane will go ahead.

      @@JamesTravis Thank you very much for your explanation. I am driving in Ireland and I struggle with the Walkinstown roundabout which also has 3 lanes upon approaching, and the road markings don't show any arrow to tell which lane to use for which exit, there are just 3 triangles which means "Yield". If you have some spare time you can do a search on Google Maps for this round about and you'll see.
      I guess, left lane is for exit 1 and 2, middle lane is for exit 3 and 4, right lane is for exit 5 and 6, not sure if it's correct. Yesterday I used the middle lane to take the 3rd exit, as I passed the 2nd exit I mirrored signaled left and on my left there was a car that honked at me furiously. I thought that driver was going to take the 4th or 5th exit and she honked at me because if I turned left to take the 3rd exit and she was still going around to get to the 4th or 5th exit we would crash into each other. But no she took the 3rd exit as well.
      Not sure what happened there. Should I have taken the left lane if I was getting out at the 3rd exit? I really don't know and as a new driver it has greatly discouraged me. The thought that I might have made a serious mistake and turned it into an accident is just too much. My hands and feet are extremely cold when I drive, and my face is hot. Guess I concentrate too much and become stressful and all the blood rush to my head.
      Sorry for the long comment Travis. I enjoyed your videos and I will watch more of them to get experience because Irish roads and UK roads are quite similar, though UK roads are much more complicated in my opinion.

      On large dual busy carriageways you will find that to help the traffic flow better. The left lane filters off left.
