  • One of my favorite folk songs out there. And they(by which I mean The Young Dubliners) covered it(as usual) brilliantly!
    Quick recap..
    Artist: The Young Dubliners
    Song: I'll Tell Me Ma
    Album: With all Due Respect
Hope ya love the song as much as I.
    -Lyrics!-
I'll tell me ma when I go home
The boys won't leave the girls alone
They pull my hair & stole my comb
But that's all right till I get home
    (chorus)
She is handsome, she is pretty
She is the belle of Dublin city
She is courting one, two, three
Please, won't you tell me, who is she?
Albert Mooney says he loves her
All the boys are fighting for her
Knock at the door and they ring the bell
Saying, "oh my true love, are you well?"
Out she comes, as white as snow
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
Old Jenny Murphy says she'll die
If she doesn't get the fellow with the roving eye
    (Chorus)
Let the wind and the rain and the hail blow high
Snow come shovelin' from the sky
She is sweet as apple pie
She'll get 'er own lad by and by
When she gets a lad of her own
She won't tell her ma when she goes home
Let them all come as they will
It's Albert Mooney she loves still
    (Chorus)

It’s an Irish folk song. The lyrics change from town to town. That’s how folk songs go. It’s like Tim Finnegan’s wake, it changes a bit depending on how the recording artist learned it growing up.

Indeed. In Irish Gaelic there are four different dialects. So some one in co Kerry could not understand some one from Donegal ( in Irish ). If you read this today ,happy new year x

I think the Young Dubliners are great. Both their original music and covers leave little to be desired. They've been my favorite band since I was 12. You won't find a more fan-oriented group.

@BarbaricGoose I grew up (decades ago) in Montreal, where we sang this as a skipping song (while skipping rope) & we sang it as "the girl from New York city". This sort of song is genuinely a "folk" tradition, so it changes to suit the folk who've made it their own. We were of Irish descent living in a Jewish neighborhood & the Jewish kids all had family in NYC.

This song is thought to originate from a Children's skipping song (hence the skipping rhythm). It's completely appropriate for the city to be substituted as is common in folk songs.
There is a similar old English version called 'The Wind'and another version called the 'Belle of the Golden City'.

So, I was born in Dublin and raised in Australia, in a very Irish way. Irish people will know what I mean by that. So with that out of the way, as much as I'd like it to be Dublin, it's Belfast. The belle of Belfast City. I mean, the fact that it's Belfast makes the line what it is. Belle/Belfast.
