    I was 18. Only ever played school rugby. Someone wanted to start a town rugby team where I lived, so I tried out - got a place in the XV. I was on the wing at the time, later they played me fly-half. A local RAF camp sent their 3rd XV along to play us - we creamed them. So they were a bit stung by that and sent their 1st XV to play us. They were out of our league; they scored try after try and we couldn't get there. The fly half signalled to me that he was going to re-start after a try by pretending to kick for the scrum to the left, but he swerved and kicked to me. I caught the ball and set off for the try line. I heard warning shouts and looked back and saw an enormous RAF player the size of Dave Bautista running me down. I just made it over the line and scored - our only try. Never been so scared in my life!

      Haha. Great story. I have been there. Grew up in the country in NZ. Was one of the better rugby players in our small pond. Moved to Dunedin for University and got absolutely destroyed by giant islanders who were somehow much bigger and so much faster than me. I will be honest and say my rugby career did not last long after that.

    A few points. In many cases the guy still scored the try, but you have to love the effort and it generally caused the conversion to be taken wide. Also, the recovery of these guys, especially in the 15 a side version to do this over and again for 80 minutes is astonishing

      @@jiraiyah8941 As someone raised by an American in Australia and having watched gridiron for 50 years, I have often wished that proper technique was applied instead of shoulder charges aimed at simply bumping someone off balance to effect the down. A hell of a lot of long runs and famous touchdowns never would have happened if the first attempted tackler had grappled the legs out from under the ball carrier.

    • @jiraiyah8941
      @jiraiyah8941 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Wrapping up the ball carrier definitely would’ve curbed many touchdown attempts. As someone that played American football for over 10 years, I’ll say that we are taught to wrap up and drive through the ball carrier. Also, we do not place our head behind the ball carrier in a sideline tackle like that. The head will be in front. Some people just try their own thing at times with varying levels of success.

      I'm intrigued how American footy and Rugby have the same roots. I find American footy wrong on so many levels, too many breaks, dangerous head injuries, too many focal points that you don't know where to look, a simplistic game of throw and catch to the first time observer, the difficulty of not seeing who the player is in all that clobber.....

    Are the brightly colored boots just magic or what?? Amazing speed!! Nice work putting it together but incredible athletes from dare I say an under appreciated sport well there I said it..

      The trick with bright boots is you have to be fast to wear them, otherwise you're just too pathetic to be taken seriously.

    holding the ball reduces form and slows you down vs someone without the ball ,
    also alot of factors come into play . with how fatigued you are before you start running eachother down . only way to confirm the fastest is goal line to goal line . all line up and fresh .

    You probably won't believe me but I never came up against an opponent who was as fast as myself. I could do the women's Olympic qualifying times for the 100m when I was 12yrs old. By the time I was 15 I was playing Under 19 rugby at national level. I can tell you for a fact if you want to see the fastest rugby players there is, you need to be showing 7 a side rugby games. I played sevens & without pace you might as well not be on the pitch. The only reason I didn't sign for the nearest club that played in the English top division was I'm from a poor background & no transport or way of getting to the club. I actually signed my forms, then when I was informed of the training schedules I had no way of attending. That was the end of my (it was semi professional at the time) career as player at elite levels. To this day I still think what might have been. Being a big adolescent I started as a flanker, my pace was wasted there & I was placed as 2nd centre. Things really took off from there. It was when I was asked to play full back that I started to garner a lot of attention from people in the game. I'd already been picked for my town team then County team. That was as a centre but I was invited to spend a week at the best university in the region I live in, to be coached by the then England manager of the English 1st team. It was one of the best experiences of my life. After the week me & 2 others were invited to sign for the local club. Loved it but where I'm from & the circumstances worked against me. It was also a bit elitist back then & 90% of the full English team were from a private education background. I came from the 3rd biggest comprehensive in the UK which rightly had a terrible reputation for all the wrong reasons. So it was never going to happen. So I do know a little about the game & the fastest players all play sevens. You'll find a lot of the quick players in the full game have usually all have the experience of playing sevens.

      I'm not sure pace is a thing you gain from playing7's though. People either built for speed or they are not.

      You mean if Ioane didn’t slow down from 40m out Thomas would be nowhere to be found as you can see in the replay Ioane didn’t realise Thomas was gaining on him and tried to turn on his turbo but it was too late good chase from Thomas tho not to give up and ended up being a try saver ✌🏾

      The rules 'laws' are very simple and there is one focal point so you know where to look. THe USA would be good if they didn't have so many other interests. American football has too many things to look at in one phase of play.

      I don't think so. He's young and very fast, but I've seen just as fast or faster players (with better 100m times e.g. Bryan Habana's 100m time is faster). However, in rugby it's not just about 100m speed, it's angle of running, slipperiness, acceleration off mark. He's certainly one to watch in the next few years.

    Some of these sprints are incredible when you consider these massive fucking dudes all have to be on field running around tackling and getting battered for 40 minutes straight per half. I wish it was popular in the US, if the NFL guys had played rugby through school and college instead of football they could be world beaters, they definitely have the athletes.
