There is no doubt that elephants are intelligent, VERY intelligent and VERY social. Intelligence is also multifaceted. A big brain doesn't necessarily translate into intelligence, its not just how many neurons you have, its also how they are connected, how many connections they have and what their functions are.
Out of all the animals on earth, next to dogs, elephants are my favorite. Their complexities with emotion and family make them so endearing. You can just *see* the life in their eyes. Idk, but when I get those close up shots of their eyes I start tearing up. Like I can feel a soul speaking to me ;_;
Elephants evolving to have small or no tusks at all...because the ones with the biggest ones get killed more often. At the same time, they lose their most distinctive trait of defense against predators.
I believe they use their tusks to help knock down trees and for defense. So the trade off of small or no tusks will essentially kill them off in the future.
Actually that isn't quite true. You see, the tusking gene is carried on by the females, not the males. In Asian elephants, for example, females generally have no tusks at all, so they aren't killed for the tusks. Male calves from such females all tend to have tusks, regardless of whether the father had tusks or not.
Their most common defense mechanism is their weight, the tusks are just an added bonus. Lots of footage out there showing the way they through their enormous weight around to literally smack away predators. Amazing animals. Humans.. not so much.
You gotta keep into account the fact we only increased our lifespans thru technology better medicine food etc while elephants are just naturally longlived
@@davec3651 the problem is that poachers will even kill elephants they find with no tusks. It takes days for poachers to track elephants, if they consistently find some with no tusks then they lose money. As disgusting as it is, they find it easier to just kill the elephant and move on so they won't run into it again. That's not to say that evolving to have smaller tusks won't help as it will mean they'll be less likely to be targeted within a herd, but even removing their tusks all together doesn't mean they'll be safe
@Patrick Gragg actually... tusks are in fact forward-facing teeth.... like that's an actual thing... They are most commonly canine teeth, as with warthogs, pigs, and walruses, or, in the case of elephants, elongated incisors."

Miserable existence I know, but the human spirit is to survive and provide for family no matter the cost. Elephants are incredibly intelligent creatures. Imagine a world where humans didn't get in their way. Imagine a world where elephants were just able to naturally evolve as the most intelligent species. Imagine elephant-controlled cars, elephant houses, elephant computers.. It really brings to light how different intelligent species from another planet could physically look compared to us. I admit that ones physical body could have some advantages or disadvantages to evolution, but what if elephants were able to overcome their limitations the way that humans overcome their inability to fly? Food for thought.
Elephants are such lovely animals. They need all the help they can get these days. In regards to deforestation (one of many threats to elephants), a wide variety of things can be done to help reduce the rate of it. One thing that might help would be to keep our wooden furniture for as long as possible. If we replace it with brand new furniture too frequently, the demand for fresh wood will remain. While the demand for wood remains high, loggers will continue chopping trees down in high numbers. Some of the wooden furniture in my home is over 30+ years old and still in good condition. I have no plans to replace it any time soon. Wooden furniture can last a long time if you take care of it. Replanting trees and allowing everything else to grow back should be heavily promoted. For one thing, it will help make it more difficult for poachers to access certain areas populated by elephants.
It would be cool to try to teach them to use some sorta ”word launchpad” that they press with their trunk or feet so they could ”speak” to humans. It would be interesting to see how complex thoughts they could put together
Their lack of language isn't just due to the fact they are incapable of producing the breadth of sounds for language, but it's also that language is simply not a part of their brains We have important sections of the brain we've evolved to work with language The medium of language doesn't really matter, we can do language with sounds, with hands, through images (reading,) and so many mediums If elephants had a capacity for language nothing would be stopping them from using it Us giving them the tools to speak a language is like an alien giving you the tools to normapslehch, what does that mean? @@bluechurchowl You know that it's actually not hard to become rich. Maybe not a billionaire, but getting comfortably rich is not as impossible as you make it sound. The real problem is that the distribution of intelligence exists as a an unbalanced curve, unfortunately. While wealth does not mean one is intelligent (as there are many other factors that influence one's chances of becoming wealthy), intelligence strongly correlates with financial success.
absolutely horrible :( poach the poachers, only then can you save one of South Africa's most important resources. The tourism market is one of the biggest contributers to the South African economy. poaching doesn't just hurt our earth's amazing biodiversity and ecosystem, but it hurts everyone in the country overall, by reducing the budget the government has for building roads and hospitals, and other bits of infrastructure that works for the people. aside from that, many trees and plants use elephants to disperse their seeds, and reducing the biodiversity could further desertification. South Africa's already had several record breaking droughts in the last decade. at one point Cape Town's water reservoir ran nearly completely dry, everyone's grass died b/c they couldn't water it, crops died as the water was used instead for drinking. they had like a 10 gallon per household limit, and since my grandma's house is a hotel (she live down stairs, and six guest rooms), she couldn't run her business on 10 gallons a day and tell the guests they weren't allowed to shower. elephant poop is also fertilizes the land, and is used by many insects, like dung beetles. insects are one of the primary ways that nutrients make their way up the food chain. losing one species can have so many snowballing effects on the climate and ecosystem. we have to protect elephants at all costs.
Aight . Am not trying to be an ass but youtube comments aren't the best place for an article about preserving wild life. Perhaps you could try a better platform to get your message across.
Jass Teh MLG i'll get it across in my free time on a platform that i like to be on. often we have really amazing conversations about all sorts of random topics, depending on the subject of the video. obviously i'm not going to talk about saving elephants on a tea spill video, but on a serious educational video about elephants some people like to have conversations about elephants. and the universe decides what random person reads your words at that time. some people will be interested, and other's won't.
Corvid birds like Crows and Ravens display similar behavior like self awareness, facial recognition, problem solving, mourning the death of their friends and family, and they have a fraction of the brain size.
I loved this video on the big brains of our planet’s largest living land animals, but I wish that this BBC video had differentiated between the two species of African Elephant, ( The African Forest Elephant & The African Savanna Elephant ). An ever growing number of environmentalists, conservationists, & scientists consider these two groups not only subspecies, but individual species entirely. This is backed up by both morphological and genetic research into these two types of elephants. The fact that International groups like the IUCN and, I can assume by this video, BBC Nature & Science still use the out of date grouping that puts all elephants in Africa into a single species, harms the diminishing population of the Forest Elephant who has been the most affected by poaching and is the least studied of all of the different types of living elephants across the globe. I hope these groups will soon acknowledge the science and research being conducted on these TWO wonderful species of Elephant, so as to protect these magnificent animals from human threats, bring back both of their populations to natural levels and ensure that they have a future in this world we all share together😊
i find it very interesting how nature knows that elephants are being poached for their tusks and in turn making them have smaller tusks or no tusks at all, almost as if nature has a mind of its own
Adoro elefantes!! Nature and evolution are incredible, I don't know how it could possibly determine that elephants are being specifically killed for their tusks, therefore shrinks them. Baffling.
Stop protesting. Bothering other civilians doesn’t help anything. There’s obviously awareness. It’s the people in charge that can make the difference. The goverment

I absolutely love elephants!
Wonder of the world, truly majestic animal😌 im sad we dont truly understand the nature of this world. But we do understand and developed to consume and eat and corrode
I feel really sad when I hear about poaching. How can we be so selfish? Today's economy has done good for no one.
as long as rich idiots are paying for these kind of things the poor will deliver. Also todays economy has done a lot of good for a loooooot of people.
I agree except with your last point. Pretty supid to say today's economy does no good to ANYONE.
@@samartin1204 It mostly benefits the rich. Most working people don't like their jobs and do so only to survive.
@@bluechurchowl You know that it's actually not hard to become rich. Maybe not a billionaire, but getting comfortably rich is not as impossible as you make it sound. The real problem is that the distribution of intelligence exists as a an unbalanced curve, unfortunately.
While wealth does not mean one is intelligent (as there are many other factors that influence one's chances of becoming wealthy), intelligence strongly correlates with financial success.
fupopanda tell that to the 95% of people that aren’t comfortably rich.
Some elephants recognize human language, telling apart harmless tourist from native poachers. Its insane!
Elephants can sense a human's emotions. They have abilities that we don't
If we want to progress, we must study the nature of things. So many secrets to be unveiled that could bring success. Tesla knew this.
Patrick Gragg low frequency vibrations and mind altering drugs. Adaptation over evolution. Lots to learn.

Imagine another animal species that have the same Intelligence as elephants but aren't the same race.
absolutely horrible :(
poach the poachers, only then can you save one of South Africa's most important resources.
Jass Teh MLG
i'll get it across in my free time on a platform that i like to be on. often we have really amazing conversations about all sorts of random topics, depending on the subject of the video.
obviously i'm not going to talk about saving elephants on a tea spill video, but on a serious educational video about elephants some people like to have conversations about elephants. and the universe decides what random person reads your words at that time. some people will be interested, and other's won't.
3:40 a bird on the elephants back 😼
Rhinos and Hippos almost always have birds on their backs. With Elephants I think it's a bit tougher for birds
Corvid birds like Crows and Ravens display similar behavior like self awareness, facial recognition, problem solving, mourning the death of their friends and family, and they have a fraction of the brain size.
that is very interesting they have evolved with shorter tusks. Not a surprise really, the ones with tasks don't survive to reproduce as much.
I would love to hear videos on low frequency sounds
Elephants are among my favourite animals.
Why are elephants so perfect?
So nice to see elephants with massive tusks. Was seldom scene during the height of ivory poachers.
I couldn't imagine how someone could kill one of these magnificent creatures
I dearly hope that there's a special place in bell waiting for poachers

I liked them, but they were a bit long for my taste. But fun, for sure!
i find it very interesting how nature knows that elephants are being poached for their tusks and in turn making them have smaller tusks or no tusks at all, almost as if nature has a mind of its own
@@harrybirchall3308 :( only a matter of years when they'll have no tusks at all
So beautiful
Adoro elefantes!!
Nature and evolution are incredible, I don't know how it could possibly determine that elephants are being specifically killed for their tusks, therefore shrinks them. Baffling.
We can learn from them... honestly.
I want to protest for no poaching! 😢😡 💪 💪 👊
Stop protesting. Bothering other civilians doesn’t help anything. There’s obviously awareness. It’s the people in charge that can make the difference. The goverment
