I've noticed that Austin starts his release lower than Devin's. The lower the set point the more momentum on the shot which allows longer range. Although if the shooter does not have other mechanics down their shot will more than likely be off.
Yes a lot of the shooters that can shoot it from really deep have this style. Steph, trae, Lillard even. They all shoot from a bit lower, starting their shot closer from their chest
Yes, just look at Trae Young. His release or set point (I don't know the word for it) is very low, like lip level and thus he has one of the deepest shots in the league.
I saw this drill a while ago and started doing it basically every time I go hoop to warm up.This drill along with sitting under the rim and shooting on a chair has EXPONENTIALLY improved my shooting.I just wanted to thank you guys, this drill really works.🤙🏻
6:07 his shooting extension stays the same but the set point gets lower and lower the further he goes out and the form is much much quicker than when he was right up on the basket up to the mid range. So the shot does actually change.
When I shoot from three I lower my release slightly, and so did Austin as he got further away, so I think it may help you Devin if you want to jump less as you move really far out. Another thing that my dad and I have found is that if you bring the ball straight up and not bring it towards your face it will help with consistency. One more critique for your shot Devin is you kind of hitch the ball, and that will decrease power from your shot.
I do this drill almost everyday and it is hard to extend the range all the way back but it is very helpful for keeping the same mechanics over long shots, the furthest I can go without jumping is college 3pt line.

Bro ive done this last year and ever since then my range improved drastically. I still have a weird form but my shots are going in especially at my favorite park to hoop at
9:14 this is what my friend does in 1v1s. I contest his three then it either goes in or bounces so far away even if I run for it, He can get there before I do or it goes out of bounds
As someone who picked up basketball late compared to most (6th grade, but didnt actually play serious till 9th or 10th grade, like I literally couldn't dribble between my legs till 9th grade) and when I started to take it serious, I worked religiously on finishing at the rim with english, but I was never a shooter. As of my first year out of highschool I one day just decided to become a shooter and within a week or 2 became a perimeter threat and slowly started to increase my range to shoot deep. All that said the keys to becoming an exponentially better shooter (if your not a shooter already) is confidence to take 3s in game as often as possible and to look for the 3 ball. And shoot it one motion, dont halt at the peak of your release with a set pt, transfer your lower body momentum into a fluid one motion release.
Ye I really need to extend my range. I see that you understand that with most people, the further they are from the hoop the more their jumpshot changes including mine.
When you get into that 1-2 it starts the stretch-shorting-cicle (ssc) , which helps produce more force into the jumpshot , it's also used in vertical jump training . I learned that at byanymeansbasketball . Very good dril , i am watch it while quarentined , can wait to try it when i get back on the court !
I shoot the ball in front of my face.I also don’t jump that high off the ground soon as I jump I release my shot. I also have a quick release being only 5’7 had to be able to get if off quick. I find it works good for me shooting a few feet behind the 3 is no issue for me but it used to be range just got deeper older I got. I’m fast enough still at 30 yrs old to keep the defense on skates basketball will always be my first love 💯🏀
Ik you’re probably never gonna see this and idek if it’s something you can learn but if you somehow see this can you make a video like this about passing cuz the way y’all do it is amazing to me your vision is amazing and I want to have that type of absolute
From watching many shooters, especially during their hot streaks the same basics always appear. Heel off ground -> shooting pocket set -> push ball at eye-level -> off the ground -> follow through
@@dreambeatz3797 he meant that he said 'Notice how my shot stays the same' but his set point got to around his shoulder as he got 3 steps back from 3, so his shot did indeed change
His shot form did not change. Only the point of release to facilitate distance. When you are shooting up close your shot is up but the further you go its not so much lower but the release is up AND OUT. They didnt explain it well but this drill is important. Not so much about maintaining your form but more on transfer of energy. The body subconsciously knows to move the ball further you have to shoot the ball one smooth motion and not stop the energy. This is obvious in dev who pauses his release on the top of his form but the further he gets the less he pauses. Weve been taught power comes from the legs for so many years but it really comes from the upper body. Reps will make it consistent. Sorry late reply I know.
Yea you’re not wrong but important mechanic or skill to add to your shot is being able to change your set point. Obviously what I’m talking about is technically different since my principle would relate more to raising it for contested shots, but you get the idea. Basically what I’m saying is that his shot does technically stay the same in his mechanics, and his set point did get lower but it’s to cope with distance.
Nah, I'm sure everyone wanted to do it and I actually think I was the first. But obviously, back then if you took threes without a need, you'll get benched. It was the coach that gave him the previlage first
If you watch he's using a similar form but changing the speed and force he performs the shot with. Also, the further he moves out the more force he's deriving from his lower body and arm movement. More force and more speed equals more power which means further distance. The trick is to practice this so it becomes natural with your shot form so you end up with a consistent shot from all ranges knowing just the right force and speed to use. There are huge benefits to having a single motion shot which takes the path of least effort and finishes at the top of your upward motion rather than a broken motion or shot that moves above your head and backwards before coming forwards.
It's a really good drill to create form and make a player gauge power v distance. But...the release point is changing, so the power is generating less from the shoulder and more from the arm's momentum. Like pitching a baseball vs swinging a golf club. Because Austin's eye-hand is so elite he can keep the target on point. By adding the hop, you're taking some force exertion out of the arm's swing which should produce better accuracy. A full jump would change the upper mechanics. This is all good, but its application has to be scaled down based on age and male or female.
I think a video about something you talked about would be really cool and helpful for a lot of people who grew up either watching Jordan, Kobe, Tmac, Lebron etc. Basically that era before the NBA became all analytical and 3's. What all those people I named have in common is that they get a lot of elevation when they shoot. So something to explore the mechanism of that, pros and cons etc,
I combined this with Coach Colin Castel's "S" Shooting Path. And lo and behold I was able to easily shoot the ball from past the NBA 3. Thanks for the tips and videos.
At normal 3pt range, most players shoot with the posterior muscle of their arm ( triceps). By increasing range of shot, they must utilize their biceps and other anterior muscles. They push the ball. But if you shoot too much and get tired, your shooting form goes wrong. And you don't want to get used to that wrong shooting form. So do not shoot too much when youre trying to increase your range. Go to the gym. Do workouts for both anterior and posterior muscles of your arm. Its the key to develop your posterior muscle. Because shooting by your posterior muscle virtually makes your shot accuracy. Its also important to develop your wrist strength. I couldnt shoot at the 3pt range. But after 5 days doing workout for my wrist, I did shoot from 3pt line.
The drill I use (in my kindle book, "Zen and the Perfect JumpShot") is a bit more comprehensive. Yet similar. What he's doing there in a straight line is what guys like Dwite Howard should do... shooting inside from the beginning with the same form as free throwing... but he SHOULD use his legs and NOT overemphasize the wrist flick.
This is a great video, could be the best shooting video every! Thank you! I noticed Austin has more one motion shoot without stopping the move like what Devin does. I also stop the ball and break the one motion. I will try to make my shot more "one-motion", I hope it will help to extend my range. I would love to hear Austin about shooting hand and guide hand placement tips!
Came back to this video and I noticed that on Dev's shot - yeah everything stays the same, but when Austin shoots he says that everything is the same but his set point is getting lower and lower (of course cause of the power needed). At the start he shoots from the head and later on beyond the three the set point drops down to about nose level.
thank for this because basically i'm a really good ball handler/playmaker but i really don't shoot as much i just do layups and shoot mid ranges but i want to take my game to another level and start shooting threes and become like james harden and stephen curry when it comes to playmaking and shooting thank you for this
@Devin.Williams The reason you cant reach the net from deep range is because your doing a quick 2 motion shot, (Watch closely) if your trying achieve that pure 1 motion shot, shoot the ball like a rocket. The problem I see you have is your bringing the ball to your set point and focusing too much on it and that takes away the pureness away from the 1 motion. When at the 3 point line shoot the ball the same way you shoot in the video because your strong enough but if you really want that quick release shooting deep range has to be straight up, like you mention shooting like a kid as if your just throwing up the ball (set point (set point being lower,) also focusing more on your shooting hand
I’m only 5’9 and not so much strength have you some tips brothers ? I mean like in my mind I feel to weak to make the shoot so I automatically change my way to improve strength but I need to change that asap
Can someone whose a little bit more experienced explain to me what he was saying about the 1-2 step he does before every shot. To me he looks as if he catches the ball, then takes two steps, which would be a travel since he didn’t set the ball down before taking a step. I understand this is practice but you should also practice as if you’re in a game. Any clarification?
@ people saying his set point gets lower, the idea is that you’re building the range with your upper body, that way you are not making any unnecessary moves in your shot there for making it repeatable.
I really need some advice : whenever I shoot ( I am right handed ) my wrist seems to make a 360 motion when the ball is released. My hand then ends back up at the set point. I am questioning if this is affecting my shot.
Devin, it's in the hips. While staying with your knees bent on your ball of foot, when you go up you instead push into your ball of foot and straighten legs from the hips down, while squeezing glutes. That is how he is able to put up that strength in the shot. Trust me. It's ball of foot to hip connection, it's not ridiculous upper body strength.
I play basketball in england and i could shoot lights out from deep at my school and once i got into a real league everything change and my jumper felt really off and flawed compared to everyone else and i'm slowly losing confidence, any tips?
Also when you wear shoes low to the ground and shoes that doesn't inhibit ankle mobility makes a big difference you should they to shoot bare feet some time see how much more you score
I did this drill and shot it super consistent all the way to a couple steps past high school three. but then when i did it adding in a jump i was definitely not making as high of a percentage of my shots. Do you think there is something with my jump that could be messing up my form?
I'm going to be as good as this guy. I just can't shoot at the moment because I have nerve damage in both of my wrists. please pray that I can be healed and become the shooter I once was!!
looks like an amazing drill being able to shoot free throws that far!, but how do I prep my body to do that, hitting air balls as soon as I get to the three pointer lol
Funny thing is Dev actually kept his shot(specially the set point) same but Austin kept changing his shot by lowered his set point as soon as he got about the NBA 3 pointer range...
Me and my brother worked shooting for 2 weeks and I instantly became a knock down shooter not just catch and shoot I had a killer step back but then I sprained my ankle
Word of advice : don’t be so visibly affected by each miss. Nobody is judging you if you miss a couple
I always tell kids that.
1. you don't want to show the opposition frustration.
2. you don't want to disrupt your own confidence.

Austin Miller is the most humble.
Great vid as always.🙏🏻
Can you please make tutorial for combo moves that blow by a defender
Would love to see a video on the midrange pull up
malik murad yeh same
Go to pgc pull ups
Wonder if Austin ever played with Aj Lapray

Thank you very much!
I really needed this, thank youu ⚡
i like how dev didnt even react when he said he scored 2,000 points in highschool. thats a lot
Gonna try this. Thanks
9:20 Yo the flashback from 10000 Hours IN THE LAB - Dulani Robinson vs Devin Williams (Part 1) 6:34 mark. Anyone else remember that?
i remember that, i still go back and watch that one sometimes
How can this small dude shoot SO FAR without jumping ? insane upperbody strength
All about rhythm, core strength and timing my guy. If uppee body mattered big men would be shooting from past half court
@@paulgeorge9228 yeah so litteraly what I said. Core is upper body and can be seen as strength. The big men comparison is irrelevant
@@dask7428 core is not upper body lmao, look up curry he does 400 lb deadlifts.
thank for this because basically i'm a really good ball handler/playmaker but i really don't shoot as much i just do layups and shoot mid ranges but i want to take my game to another level and start shooting threes and become like james harden and stephen curry when it comes to playmaking and shooting thank you for this
4:42 so you don’t have to find the time 😤💪
yo man that was amazing be who u are and stray true
@Devin.Williams
The reason you cant reach the net from deep range is because your doing a quick 2 motion shot, (Watch closely) if your trying achieve that pure 1 motion shot, shoot the ball like a rocket.
Make a long story short use all wrist and if y’all really want some range do some bench press or upper body and forsure that ball will fly😂
Keep grinding 💯
I’m only 5’9 and not so much strength have you some tips brothers ? I mean like in my mind I feel to weak to make the shoot so I automatically change my way to improve strength but I need to change that asap
Is that ball gonna be available? I have the white one but idk if the orange will ever be in the store
I've always felt like shooting the ball straight is the most important thing. Itdoesnt have a chance of droppin if it isn't on line.
Is it okay to get reps up on outside rim and etc ?? Or that doesn’t really work as well ??
Lance Barron it works exactly the same. Just harder because the wind and stuff may affect your shot
CyrusJaxson yeah true thanks
Wow. My coaches always told me shooting was in the legs.... so much for that haha
Ik it’s 2yrs later but it’s different for everyone if u have the strength it’s in your form but if u dont its in the legs
9:45 im dying lololololol
@ people saying his set point gets lower, the idea is that you’re building the range with your upper body, that way you are not making any unnecessary moves in your shot there for making it repeatable.
I really need some advice : whenever I shoot ( I am right handed ) my wrist seems to make a 360 motion when the ball is released. My hand then ends back up at the set point. I am questioning if this is affecting my shot.
i cant even do a 3 pointer with jumping any tips. i try to use as much wrist as possible
This dude is malicious!!!!!!!!!!💯🏁🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
😂😂😂😂 damn @goonie zay this where the video idea came from
Would you rather go to a d1 school play 2 min a game or a d2 school and get consistent minutes?
Do you think there is something with my jump that could be messing up my form?
yo great Great GREAT VIDEO I NEEDED THAT
I'm going to be as good as this guy. I just can't shoot at the moment because I have nerve damage in both of my wrists. please pray that I can be healed and become the shooter I once was!!
How u liking those next levels
I seem to like like them
looks like an amazing drill being able to shoot free throws that far!, but how do I prep my body to do that, hitting air balls as soon as I get to the three pointer lol
Noti Gang Salute 🖖🏾
Funny thing is Dev actually kept his shot(specially the set point) same but Austin kept changing his shot by lowered his set point as soon as he got about the NBA 3 pointer range...
Limitless range
Hall of fame
Should I do this if I’m trying to extend range going into 9th and don’t know if it matters but I’m only 5’4
Me and my brother worked shooting for 2 weeks and I instantly became a knock down shooter not just catch and shoot I had a killer step back but then I sprained my ankle
I do this drill 7 days a week. Furthest ive gotten is from my own 3pt line...full court jumpshot. It blew my mind! Keep this going man. Big ups
