You should have walked further, till the footsteps vanished. That way we could have maximum amount of meters till the pokemon appears. (For example if I see a Pikachu on the list with 3 footsteps: well a Pikachu is within ** meters of me) Hope that makes sense, good video tho
no i some times see the pokemon and it still says 3 steps it never goes down to 2 or 1 never and that way i cant track the hundreds of squirtles in my place
Hartor 70 When you click on the Pokemon in your radar the thing on the bottom right will pulse green when walking the right direction, when you aren't, it won't pulse green
Oh my god, it's been a century since footsteps were removed from the nearby pokemon view. It's nice to remember 2016 summer with these kind of videos. Also proud of what Nick has achieved in this years. Congratulations man!
We have. It's been *several* days. This is absurd. And it's not just a glitch either. They purposefully disabled it (a core element of this game) so that the servers could handle the addition of more countries. I don't know why they can't fucking fix the fucking servers with the fucking billions that they are raking in. Sorry Niantic, but if you need to remove core elements of your game so that you can bring it to other countries, might I suggest at least just keeping it in the U.S. for now?
I have a question, when is the ideal time to throw a pokeball? Some sources are saying when the ring around the pokemon is smallest, others say when it is largest.
Throw the ball to land in the circle for bonus xp, and also for greater catch rate. Smaller the circle you're landing inside of means greater catch rate and bonus xp for the catch.
For anyone reading this, this is an answer to main comments question. It mainly depending on skill, because if u cant throw the pokeballs greatly u want to keep the ring large But if u r an accurate thrower wait for it to get smaller
Kind of glad instead of fixing this feature they just decided to use Pokestops and the pokemon near them. I mean it can sometimes be a long walk for a Pokemon I want but at least I know where to go.
+misterawsomeman yeah thats where i live. i had 3 footprints since the game released in switzerland. its frustruating cause there were a few dratinis nearby and i had no chance to track it. then it was gone lol
When you re-do this video to determine the upper limit of the 3-steps pokemon, it would be great to draw circles within circles. The most innercircle representing the 40m radius (so a 80 meter circle in diametre), the second 20 meters outside of that, and the third, 30 meters outside of the previous, and then the outer circle outside which it vanishes (the upper limit of the 3steps pokemen). Awesome video, man!
Hi Nick, you’ll never see this, but as someone who has been a viewer since day 1, it’s been amazing watching you grow so much. Not just you, but your filming and editing as well! Keep up the amazing work! Keep it classy 👌
Maybe if you actually go outside and walk 3 steps than you might get one. Cause being in your house all day walking around doesn't really help that much.
I have a question, my nearby menu is bugged, everytime a pokemon is nearby it shows 3 footsteps no matter what, all of them show 3 footsteps, even when they spawn, it shows 3 footsteps, this bothers me cause it makes harder for me to find a specific pokemon, how do I fix this?
I just found your videos, and I wanted to say THANKS. The reason is I just got back into pokemon, your tips and comments have been amazing. Please keep up the great work.
This is so well investigated, just like I (as a former lab technician) would have done it!! Nice!! Here in my hometown I only see 3 footsteps (I never spotted pokemon with 1 or 2 footsteps) but hopefully in the future I will find some rare ones nearby and now I finally know what the footsteps mean. Thank you!!!
Just a heads up, There is a glitch in the system that only allows 3 footprints to be shown. Please disregard the nearby list until the glitch has been fixed. Stay tuned to our socials for updates :) - Juan
Thanks, I was seeing the same thing, and wasn't sure if it was a glitch or not. The only way we were able to track this weekend, was to use the order of the pokemon in the nearby list, then restart the game often to eliminate any "ghosts" that were left in the list.
There's still one thing I have a question about. After walking to the 3rd footstep at 90 meters, exactly how far can you keep walking until stop showing the Pokemon on the nearby list? That way we can know how the range of the 3rd step like we do with the others (40m - 60m - 90m - ???). Hope that question makes sense
But how far must you walk from the 3rd footstep for the pokemon to drop from your nearby list? I typically have only 3 step pokemon in my nearby list when I'm home, and no matter what direction I walk the steps 90% of the time don't go down. In fact I typically discover another pokemon that was previously not even on my nearby list before the steps on the others go down. I never try for 3 steppers because of this issue. Its simply impossible for me to find them because the list never tells me if I'm getting closer or further. Hell, I've been at a gas station about 6 miles from my house and saw a 3 step pokemon, drove home and after about 5 miles I checked my list and it was still on my list at 3 steps..
According to the video 3 steps when the Pokemon is at the top of the list is about .1 kilometer away from your position, the closest Pokemon on your list should be the top left one, also the 3 footprints seem to be glitched and don't change at the moment.
its because the games is curently broken so all pokemon are 3 steps all the time, if you notice this video was made on the 15th before the glitch started happening
+GTL I'ved been having this issue before the update. 3steppers stay on my list and I'll discover pokemon that aren't even on the list before one of my 3steppers drops a step.
+Naomi Baker its anyoying before they glitch the steps worked fine and i could track down a pokemon pretty easy now it sucks hope they fix it. Also everyone i speak too out hunting find the app freezes ALOT i gotta restart it heaps. really really hoping they fix some of this
Gotta say, as a science undergrad, your experimental method is pretty on-point in terms of execution and repetition. I'm still curious as to how far you'd need to be for footprints to show up at all (I believe you only mentioned that they show up if you're 90m < away? Kinda vague, but that's okay). Thanks!
Yeah, If you want a certain pokemon, the more close your walk towards its position it would switch more close to the 1st position. If it is getting closer to the 9th position then/or it disappears, turn around and walk a different direction and it should re-appear.
Awesome experiment but I think the most useful part of this test is left out. What is the maximum distance away from a Pokemon in which it will still show up on the nearby list? Knowing that 3 footprints is over 90 meters away is not so helpful unless we know the cap on that. It's easy to track something down if you've gone from 3 footprints to 2, you just keep moving in the general area but the hardest part is figuring out when to change directions if it is stuck on 3.
Very glad you did this multiple times, at first I thought too that it would be innacurate because of server lag. But I was very happy when you repeated the 'experiment' as you should in a good research :)
this roughly corresponds to 100s of feet. 100ft=30m, 200ft=60m and 300ft=90m Also it'd be cool to also do this for the limit of the "nearby", as in how far away do you have to be before a pokemon first appears on the nearby (I've heard that the nearby 3x3 grid also acts as an indication for how close they are, with top left being closest and bottom right being furthest away).
You marked three changing to two, two to one, one to none, and then none to the pokemon. But how far are you when the pokemon first appears on your nearby?
Really appreciate the videos. Im currently in Korea anxiously waiting for the release. Keep it up, and keep the videos rolling for the new players. It's valuable information.
This was a very simple but pretty useful experiment. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Now we can all use this once they fix the 3 print big.
The problem is that once you have 3 feet icon how far away does it still show on the tracker? I know it starts at 90meters but, can you be at like 300meters and it still shows with 3 feet?
What you probably should have done is walked until it was no longer on your nearby list so you could see the furthest extent that 3 footsteps reaches rather than the beginning of the 3 footstep range.
I think you should've also included how far until the pokemon disappears from the nearby. Ive only seen people say its around 150m until the pokemon disappears but would be cool if you did an experiment on that to confirm it.
you missed one important bit of info... 3 footprints > 90m... but what is the range...if a 3 foot print poke' appears on the nearby how far is the distance i must walk til it turns to 2 footprints?
Maybe instead walk away till 1 foot print appears and place a cup. When second foot print appears place another when third print appears place a third than walk away until it disappears and place the last one. This way it's good to see exactly how far away a Pokemon would be. Since you've already done most of it you could do a short vid if you using pika and one cup and measure the distance of how far until it disappears showing us about how far a pokemon would possibly be as soon as it spawns
When does it disappear off the grid? Like how far can a Pokemon be away from you to show up on the grid. If you have 3 people hunting together, you can triangulate to make finding them really easy.
I think some more helpful data would be how far do you have to go for it to no longer show up at all. Getting a good gauge of between 90 Meters and no longer nearby would be pretty helpful.
sadly, nearly every Pokemon has three steps. The methodology did not reveal the distance, but the minimum distance. We know it's more than 90m, but from what I've seen, it could be much more, around 300+ meters.
the three paw print thing is broken they're all 3 paw prints until you're less than 5m. you can track a pokemon by how far up or down it moves on the list. if it goes up you're going in the right direction if it goes down you're going the wrong dorextion.
I feel like you could have gone further. There is a range from where 3 foot prints begins and ends and it seems pretty significant. An Illustration would be *---------01---------------12-------------23-----------------------------3 Star representing pokemon actual location. 01 being where single paw disappears and zero paws begins. The point being that there is a range between where 3 begins and 3 ends both on the side of 2 and completely not registered. My tests last week may have been flawed because I was on a bike but were pretty consistent in that it could be over half a mile from where three paws began and three paws ended becoming two paws.
I've been watching your videos so far, and I really enjoy them. Your editing skills are great, research is incredibly thorough, and ever video shows that you put a lot of effort into creating them. All in all your content is amazing, and I hope for your success.
Thanks for the research man, if you consider that the steps actually mark an area (so m^2) the difference becomes a lot bigger than the 60m-40m=20m or 90m-60m=30m with the areas being 40m^2=1600m^2 60m^2=3600m^2 and 90m^2=8100m^2 ;)
The footsteps are glitched, the pokemon never go under three steps on mine and many others' phones. We can still track somewhat though by following the top left = right direction/ bottom right = farther away. Its tricky though and even with 4 of us splitting up to cover ground it only works about half the time..
I assume, when the paws are working again, that three paws will represent anything greater than 100m, how close will a Pokemon have to be to show up in the "nearby"?
Now if we could know which direction to go in. The distance doesn't help much if you go in the opposite direction, and then try and come back, and by that point it despawns.
I just measured how far the circle on the map goes before it bleeds out by looking at how far it went out from the front curb of my house to behind my house. I used the distance measurement in google maps and it came out to 137.33 ft (41.86 m). So if/when the tracking comes back, when the pokemon has 1 footprint it is somewhere within that circle that pulses around your character. The 2nd circle that pulses out from the first only measures about 10m before it disappears.
In my opinion, it would have been even better to find out how far it is before the pokemon drops off the radar entirely, to demonstrate the maximum distance away a pokemon can be whilst on the tracker.
I think even if footsteps are 2 or 3 there is still a slight probability that you will encounter that pokemon. I believe there are probability distributions that govern spawning of pokemon and the distribution is affected by MapCell which you are in, radar steps to Pokemon, time of day (and probably weather). This is just a theory, but all data that I have observed and seen friends observing supports it including this video that showed that the distances were not equal but about the same. (Which strongly suggests radar footsteps affect probability that a pokemon will spawn but don't guarantee that it will).
This was super helpful! Thanks!! Although, this won't be too helpful right now since Niantic is keeping the footsteps at 3 while they fix the servers. However, idk if it will help at all with future experiments (and you probs already know this), but if a bunch of pokemon at 3 footprints away and you start getting closer to one, it will move future up the list of nearby pokemon. Also, the box will flash a green box around it, if you are walking in the right direction to the pokemon (at least that's what I think)
You should have walked further, till the footsteps vanished. That way we could have maximum amount of meters till the pokemon appears. (For example if I see a Pikachu on the list with 3 footsteps: well a Pikachu is within ** meters of me) Hope that makes sense, good video tho
Came here to say this exactly.
My aways shows 3 steps no mater how much i walk can someone help me ?
I know, this is fairly inaccurate because there has been a pikachu with 3 steps like half a kilometer or more away
no i some times see the pokemon and it still says 3 steps it never goes down to 2 or 1 never and that way i cant track the hundreds of squirtles in my place
Hartor 70 When you click on the Pokemon in your radar the thing on the bottom right will pulse green when walking the right direction, when you aren't, it won't pulse green

It says 3 steps no matter what for me and my friend :/
+Billy The Goat same I'm on a road trip and I'm so mad that I can't play Pokemon accurately😡

40m=120ft
60m=180ft
90m=270ft
Thanks america for being different!!!
Thank you !!! Lol
not all hero's Weare capes
What conversion are you using? I just plugged the numbers into Google and got:
40 meters = 130 feet
60 meters = 200 feet
90 meters = 300 feet
Yw for being the protector of ever country in need
He is using the x3 method I guess
For me I rarely ever see 2 or 1 steps. It just jumps from 3 steps to being right in front of me
It's because of a glitch from the new update. They are working on fixing it.
+JamesGothRacing no they're not. they're too busy fixing mispelled words on their magikarps
So glad you did this experiment and #TeamMysticFTW
Yeah #TeamMysticFTW

Was this recommended to anyone else 4 years later when this feature hasn't existed in so long?
The footsteps dont change on mine :( It is always at 3 no matter how close I am D:
Glitch right now. Will be fixed soon

How are you playing with the footsteps? My footsteps are always on 3.
Niantic said themselves that the footsteps are broken and that they are working on fixing it as soon as they can
this video is from before the bug pal

So in the next update it'll be fixed?
Same
Thanks for this extremely helpful video. Sike. I ain't got no footsteps but 3
It's a glitch
yeah been like that for weeks.. sucks trying to find ones
I have a question, when is the ideal time to throw a pokeball? Some sources are saying when the ring around the pokemon is smallest, others say when it is largest.
When the ring is closest to the center
but you have to land it inside the circle so bigger is easier but smaller is better but harder
Throw the ball to land in the circle for bonus xp, and also for greater catch rate. Smaller the circle you're landing inside of means greater catch rate and bonus xp for the catch.
Do curveball
For anyone reading this, this is an answer to main comments question.
It mainly depending on skill, because if u cant throw the pokeballs greatly u want to keep the ring large
But if u r an accurate thrower wait for it to get smaller
All I find are pidgeys, rattatas and weedles
You found a rattata in your house>?
+TM3000 ye...
+TM3000 Is that bad? xD ;-;
Above SKY Yes, it is bad. I only find rattatas out in the back by dumpsters. Can't imagine what your house must be like!
+TM3000 It's normall. Haha
I live in a small village... Btw PGO can't tell the surroundings by the map,
Great video bro, kind of suspected you to just guess. Nice to see you made the attempt to gather reliable evidence.
Kind of glad instead of fixing this feature they just decided to use Pokestops and the pokemon near them. I mean it can sometimes be a long walk for a Pokemon I want but at least I know where to go.
every pokemon even if right after me it's set as 3 footprint pokemon, is that a bug?
Yea it is, it's happening to everyone.
that makes so much sense now cause i was wondering why i always see 3 footsteps now i thought it was just my phone
+GazaAlley same here I don't know how to fix it
+Toxic Fuel Me neither
It's a glitch you can't fix they have to update it to fix it
i always have 3 footprints even if the pokemon stands next to me
It's a glitch I have heard alot of people having that problem
Its been going on for a time now. Same here. It doesn't work
It has been for the past 2 days because they rolled out the game in Europe.
+misterawsomeman yeah thats where i live. i had 3 footprints since the game released in switzerland. its frustruating cause there were a few dratinis nearby and i had no chance to track it. then it was gone lol

I aways see the 3 steps even if its infront of me how may i fix it
+Hartor 70 me too I think it's a glitch
Yeah Team Blue
I'm not level 5 yet but I'm planning to be on team Mystic
Can you do a test to see just how far 3 foot steps really is. The minimum is 90, but what is the max?
I guess the range that you can see on your screen.
Ad victoriam brothaaa
There's a glitch with the footsteps right now, but I mean after they fix the GPS bug.
That's a good way to lay out the experiment. Simple but effective.
When are they going to fix the glitch where they are all three steps away
Exactly
That happens for me too
Lol we can all dream
Let us pray.... xD
Yeah I have that problem
Go to Santa Monica Pier. I went last night and there were at least 300 trainers on the boardwalk. And some rare spawns
Check out our latest video :) - Juan
+Trainer Tips Haha nice 👌
What app did you use to measure how many meters you where walking?? Thumbs this up so people can see.
I used an app called GPS Distance Meter on Android.
Hi Nick, you’ll never see this, but as someone who has been a viewer since day 1, it’s been amazing watching you grow so much. Not just you, but your filming and editing as well!
Keep up the amazing work!
Keep it classy 👌
I feel so lucky to have found you. You're the only channel I've seen doing this kind of stuff. Keep the good content :)
I have never seen under 3 footsteps. Its either 3 footsteps or the pokemon is in catchable range. Is there a fix to this that I am unaware of?
At the moment there's a bug that all pokemon stay at 3
Maybe if you actually go outside and walk 3 steps than you might get one. Cause being in your house all day walking around doesn't really help that much.
+MysticStrike ForceSSJ3 wtf are you talking about
same
Yeah the game is bugged. The footprints dont change for anyone. They need to fix this shit.
Same mine does that.
Niantic hasto fix it. Just restart pokemon go and the despawned pokemon will disapear on your nearby menu, if that's what ya meant.
+Ethan Chase no that's not it
Kelmend Muriqi Oh, they never get 1-2 footstep even when you stand right next to one ?
+Ethan Chase I get this, the Pokemon even if it's right next to me appear ok the nearby list as 3 footsteps

My foot steps always stays at 3 ,_,
same here, I don't know why
+Kelmend Muriqi yea mine started staying at 3 foot steps starting today
+XtremeGamingSensation same here lol
Theres a bug, its like this worldwide for everyone today
+chowelly that's good to know that means a fix is on the way

To get 2 and 1 footsteps, you must keep your nearby menu open.
My Nearby thing shows 3paws all the time even when they pop up how do you fix it
it is a glitch until further notice
wow your channel grew so much within a few days. you deserve it dude, keep up the hard work!

Hell, I've been at a gas station about 6 miles from my house and saw a 3 step pokemon, drove home and after about 5 miles I checked my list and it was still on my list at 3 steps..
Yep I have the same issue
According to the video 3 steps when the Pokemon is at the top of the list is about .1 kilometer away from your position, the closest Pokemon on your list should be the top left one, also the 3 footprints seem to be glitched and don't change at the moment.
its because the games is curently broken so all pokemon are 3 steps all the time, if you notice this video was made on the 15th before the glitch started happening
+GTL I'ved been having this issue before the update.
3steppers stay on my list and I'll discover pokemon that aren't even on the list before one of my 3steppers drops a step.
Same for me. But usually, pokemons randomly pop up so i can catch them, but the footsteps are all 3 :/
it only shows 3 steps on the new update
do you mean its bugged and the steps don't go down? cause i noticed that
+Immortal yep, it happens with the new update
+Naomi Baker its anyoying before they glitch the steps worked fine and i could track down a pokemon pretty easy now it sucks hope they fix it.
Also everyone i speak too out hunting find the app freezes ALOT i gotta restart it heaps. really really hoping they fix some of this
why is the phandom here
within the week my ass
see now something I would like to know is the direction of the pokemon
Select the pokemon you want on the nearby list, turn in a 360 degree pattern. You should see the box do like a sonar kind of blink.
Some say that sonar blink is just the box updating itself...
+horror478 Meh, works for me.
+Nexus Gaming ty I lost 2dragonite's coz I didn't know where to go, and alot of other good Pokemon
Thanks nexus glad to know
You're not a big channel and yet your videos are really well edited, high quality, and interesting too... Kudos pal
Gotta say, as a science undergrad, your experimental method is pretty on-point in terms of execution and repetition. I'm still curious as to how far you'd need to be for footprints to show up at all (I believe you only mentioned that they show up if you're 90m < away? Kinda vague, but that's okay). Thanks!
What about Pokemon in the 2nd-9th position on the nearby map?
press the pokemon you want to hunt it.

Yeah, If you want a certain pokemon, the more close your walk towards its position it would switch more close to the 1st position. If it is getting closer to the 9th position then/or it disappears, turn around and walk a different direction and it should re-appear.
The Pokemon that are closer to the top left are closer I think but my Pokemon tracker does not work
yea even that doesn't currently work
why did they remove that !
so every pomemon is 90 meters away for me always
It is a known glitch that niantic is working to fix.
+Trainer Tips hopefully soon because i missed a snorlax because of that glitch.
+Ben Dover I was just in Walmart and randomly caught a snorlax😂 didn't even see it on my radar
+DBRIS or Dante i caught one in my own house like wtf
Well theres a glitch called the 3 step glitch which by the name as you can tell will stay like that until fixed
Awesome experiment but I think the most useful part of this test is left out. What is the maximum distance away from a Pokemon in which it will still show up on the nearby list? Knowing that 3 footprints is over 90 meters away is not so helpful unless we know the cap on that. I never get 2 steps or 1 step. I get 3 steps and walk and it spawns out of nowhere
It's a pretty irritating glitch, tho Niantic and Nintendo are working on it.
yaa me too
you started too late, this theory was before the bug. That tracking system worked like two weeks ago.
Very glad you did this multiple times, at first I thought too that it would be innacurate because of server lag. But I was very happy when you repeated the 'experiment' as you should in a good research :)
Had this recommend today and I goosebumps watching! Keep doing what you love, Dude!
Mine keeps on saying 3 steps when it's not far at all
It's well known bug, everyone has it. Niantic is probably already working on a fix.. bug starting happening 2 days ago
mine's been that way since i first got the game on the 13th
thats not a good idea snake ekanks is a team rocket pokemon it might steal your pickachu

How are you walking 40 kilometers so fast?
40 meters not 40 km
thats what i said
no you said 40km which is 1000 times the distance of 40m
yeah i know. can you please answer my original question
40 meters not 40 km, 40 meters is not far
wish you also tested how far until the 3rd step disappears :(, 90 meters until it jumps from 2-3 but how far until it is no longer on the nearby list
this roughly corresponds to 100s of feet. 100ft=30m, 200ft=60m and 300ft=90m
Also it'd be cool to also do this for the limit of the "nearby", as in how far away do you have to be before a pokemon first appears on the nearby (I've heard that the nearby 3x3 grid also acts as an indication for how close they are, with top left being closest and bottom right being furthest away).
I'm so lazy :( Nevertheless #TeamMystic

PLEASE HELP ME MY FOOTSTEPS ARE NOT WORKING
Sounds like you need a podiatrist.
It's a common bug nowadays
Same, I've lost a Wartortle, Meowth, Venasaur, Dratini and Seadra to the stupid footprint glitch
Your scientific research has answered so many questions of mine! Thanks dude, keep up the good work.
TH-cam recommended this to me in 2021- what a different world we were in 5 years ago!
Man I've been watching your videos all day. But keep up the good work.
When does it disappear off the grid? Like how far can a Pokemon be away from you to show up on the grid. If you have 3 people hunting together, you can triangulate to make finding them really easy.
I think some more helpful data would be how far do you have to go for it to no longer show up at all. Getting a good gauge of between 90 Meters and no longer nearby would be pretty helpful.
i wish you kept walking until it was no longer on the nearby list, so we knew the maximum distance a pokemon could be away from us.
sadly, nearly every Pokemon has three steps. The methodology did not reveal the distance, but the minimum distance. We know it's more than 90m, but from what I've seen, it could be much more, around 300+ meters.
This is really useful when the footsteps always show as 3 regardless of distance haha
the three paw print thing is broken they're all 3 paw prints until you're less than 5m. you can track a pokemon by how far up or down it moves on the list. if it goes up you're going in the right direction if it goes down you're going the wrong dorextion.
Very neat idea for a channel! Keep up the hard work guys!
That dedication... Good job man, I will deffo spread this info around
All in all your content is amazing, and I hope for your success.
but with the 3 step glitch it would be really nice to know what is the max distance that pokemon will appear in the nearby list
The first foot print which is 40m is the distance of how far can you detect a Pokemon in an area that's why it's higher than the others.
Best Pokémon Go channel by 3 footprints
Wonder if this Eevee is still in his account....
I think the distance of the footsteps change slightly depending on the rarity of the pokemon
The footsteps are glitched, the pokemon never go under three steps on mine and many others' phones. We can still track somewhat though by following the top left = right direction/ bottom right = farther away. Its tricky though and even with 4 of us splitting up to cover ground it only works about half the time..
The first Trainer Tips video i ever saw
I assume, when the paws are working again, that three paws will represent anything greater than 100m, how close will a Pokemon have to be to show up in the "nearby"?
For my experiment today, I'm using two phones. One for the plug, and one for the load.
Now if we could know which direction to go in. The distance doesn't help much if you go in the opposite direction, and then try and come back, and by that point it despawns.
These videos are really great and very helpful! Definitely a subscriber now and keep up the great work!
Very well thought out videos and I love watching them!! Subbed!!
Thanks for discovering the distance. I've heard every foot was 100 meters. Now I can walk a lot less and have more knowledge about it. Thanks!
