Mazzy Star TV INTERVIEW, UK, ITV, The Big E 1993-94 (VIDEO)

  • TV Interview segments with Hope Sandoval and David Roback, plus part of a TV ad for the album So Tonight That I Might See.
The Big E was a late night British TV show on ITV Network.
My source for this video was another youtuber's channel called "Doing It For The Vids." Their original upload is here: • Mazzy Star (The Big E)
As the original yt uploader says, following the interview, there is, QUOTE: "also an advert for So Tonight That I Might See, which I expect was shown during the breaks in the same program, since they were next to each other on my old VHS tape."
The original uploader gives no date for the broadcast. My guess is it's likely from 1994 because the TV ad for the album So Tonight That I Might See says "The Album, OUT NOW, Includes 'Fade Into You'." The album was released in 1993, but 'Fade...' became an unexpected hit in 1994. I believe Capitol Records would have been using the belated hit "Fade..." to promote the album in ads in 1994, as we see here. Also, Mazzy Star's tour of Europe in 1994 was in June and July, and they did some dates in England both those months. So this British TV interview likely occurred June or July, 1994.
A helpful Facebook group member alerted me to the video's existence.
The original upload at "Doing It For The Vids" yt channel is longer because it intersperses clips from the official colour music video for the song Fade Into You, as did the original TV broadcast.
Unfortunately, yt won't allow my own upload to contain content from that same "Fade..." video. Yt blocked worldwide my first upload attempt because of a copyright claim forbidding my upload to contain that content. So, I've made an edited version that includes all the interview portions but removes the music video scenes.
The TV ad for the album after the interview also contained clips from that "Fade..." music video. I removed those scenes too and retained just the shot at end of the ad that mentions the album. I also cropped the video to remove visible VHS tape tracking error images that appear at the bottom and top of the original video's frame.
I've re-upped the interview to my own yt channel because fans are not finding it at its original channel. As of today it's been there 6 months and has received only 61 views total. To ensure more fans will find it, here's a re-upload. Be sure to check out the original upload too with the "Fade.." music video scenes intact.
I also made my own second edit, one that includes all the "Fade..." music video scenes. I cropped the video to remove VHS tape tracking error images that appear along the bottom and top of the original video's frame. In the original, after the interview segments end and before the TV ad for the album starts, there are a few seconds of unrelated video I removed. Yt and FB won't let me upload my complete version. But it's been upped to Google Drive where anyone interested can DL it, here: drive.google.com/file/d/1HsBI...

[Transcript from video recording of interview]:
HOPE: I think it, it is pretty difficult for us to do promotional stuff. We're sort of introverted people, so, it is pretty difficult.
HOPE: We like to experiment a lot, so-. I think if you gave us three years to record a record, to write, record it, produce it, we would take the three years. That's what I think.
DAVID: Yeah, but we would, we would probably end up recording several records in that time, and just selecting, you know. See like any-
HOPE: Changing our minds constantly [chuckles]
DAVID: Yeah, we did, we do a song, you know. Given a different day, you know, we'd probably do it differently. I think anybody would, anybody really would
HOPE: I like to sing. It can be a problem 'cause when you're, it, it automatically makes you the, the front person for the band, even though you might not want that. Even though your, your partner's just as responsible for everything. But, you know, everybody seems to focus on the singer.
HOPE: We've had bad reviews too, um. I mean, of course, you know, when anybody gets insulted
in any kind of way, you know, it affects you, so, in that sense, yeah, you know, it does affect us, but-
DAVID: I don't think we take it too seriously
    HOPE: Yeah
DAVID: You know, because that's not really who we, you know, we're not making music for the critics. And, um, it's not very, really ultimately very important to us whether they like it or not. I mean-

"We're sort of introverted ... ... ... people." Understatement of the century. Having said that, Hope works hard to deal with her introversion and still perform on stage. What a truly great work ethic. Thank you Hope and David.

There's something very special about when introverted people talk. You want to listen to word they say because you know it will be deep and of value.

    • @Old-Skull.
      @Old-Skull. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

no , it is you who thinks in that way , introverted people is the same as you only they like silence and not being the center of attention but they can be so selfish and superficial as anybody , it is a false assumption , to thinks that one person's opinions are more valuable for being introvert
i always suffer that stigma , i never liked to talk and people always tended to think that I was smarter than I really am , the truth is really sad to see how people reacts to this , it cause me a lot of problems without even open my mouth , to the point that you choose to avoid interact with people , just your closest and that's it .

I saw them as a student in London Islington Chapel in 1996. The biggest crush of my youth was on Hope Sandoval - peaking that very evening as she stood there, very still on the stage, bathed in a spotlight, singing with her head slightly bowed. An ethereal creature. Years later I saw her again with the Warm Inventions. Ever so slightly less ethereal to my more mature self, but still exquisitely beautiful and still playing wonderful music.

She also insisted on playing on darkened stages in the 1990s when ever possible, so she could barely be seen, and still does that today, She says playing live has always been difficult for her, and stiill says that in interviews. She said interviews and shooting music videos were both difficult for her. She came out of her shell for interviews in more recent years though. Check out my yt upload of a 2018 Australian radio iinterview. She's very forthcoming, in it and laughs often.
