I’m offering my perspective from writing them, but I’d love to know yours from reading them. Are there other points you’d offer up to readers who are new to cozy mysteries? ☠️🔍
I love that there are NO guns in cozy mysteries. If there were guns in cozy mysteries, then I do not recall. I never liked graphic violence. Even when I was a kid and saw violence in cartoons, it turned me off! The characters are often likable.
Hi Ellie, you are so right about cozy mysteries. I wonder if you wrote the ones about the woman archeologist, who was an expert on bones? That seems to me like you are but that isn’t the series you mentioned. I want to say A Morbid Taste for Bones but that might be a Cadfael mystery. Anyway I love cozy mysteries because you kind of know what you’re getting. I really enjoy being drawn into the atmosphere of the story and putting myself in that person’s place, and what they are eating and small details like that. I want to live their life for a while and I want it to be fun. Does that make? I remember years ago when I read The Killings at Badger’s Drift by Caroline Graham, I had to keep paper and pencil close by to write down words I didn’t know. I loved that! Also at the beginning two old ladies had lived together and made wine or jam and I could just see their sweet little old lady cottage. I want to read it again! Back in the day I loved the Victoria Holt books and Mary Stewart. Just thinking back. Thank you.
I have been a Cozy Mysteries a-holic for so long! I just love love love them! We have book sales 2 times a year and I always look for as many as I can find. But up until this year 2024 they had never had a Cozy Mysteries area (but I had asked every year) I guess they finally found out about us😊😉And that these are a thing, so now they have a special area! Thank you for this video, I am going to share it so others can learn about Cozies! 💜📚💜
I am 47. I have been reading cozies since I was in high school. They are my absolute favorite because of all the things you said in this video. We all need some light escapes especially now! Thank you for your books!❤️
Thank you for the video. I have read mysteries all my life. My Mom did, my Dad did. I was recently in the hospital for a long period. I was going stir crazy. One of my sisters came to visit me. I had asked her for books that she read and liked. She brought me a bag of what turned out to be copies. I read every one of them. And, I enjoyed them. I am a male! I appreciate your explanation of the genre.
I have been a fan of cozy mysteries since the 4th grade with “Encyclopedia Brown.” I love the small town feel, the fun get away, the mystery, and relaxation it gives me. Some of my favorite cozy mystery series are: The Bakeshop Mystery series, The Booktown Mystery series, The Southern Sewing Circle series, The Domestic Diva series, The Teashop Mystery series, and The Murder She Wrote series. Love your work! Thank you for giving us the gift of cozy mysteries😊📚📖
I loved the Encyclopedia Brown books and read them again to my son when he was around that age as well. That is a wonderful list of cozy mystery series. I’m humbled to have the Bakeshop Mysteries listed as one of your favorites. Thanks so much for watching! 🥰
A light escape is exactly what I feel when reading cozies.. I agree with all your points too! I love small towns (hallmark series i watch are smalltown based too)..and I love that I get to "solve" the mystery. I choose the series based on what I wish to learn or what I want to do (bake) hence I started with Cupcake Mysteries then discovering Bakeshop Mysteries.. and the rest is history!!
I am a long-time cozy murder reader; my library is full of them. I like them because they are not dark and grim. I think most people gravitate towards them, for the fluffy factor. I wonder if I am unusual, I have picked several series because of place, but none because of "hobby." Maybe traveling is my hobby. :)
Agreed! For me, reading cozy mysteries is a light escape from the harsh reality of the world. I remember a conversation we had at Malice about cozy mysteries. I was having a hard time because at that time several, cozy mysteries let me down - either I did not like the characters or the story was boring or I could not follow the story. Now I do not remember which novels were DNF for me. I was very happy that you told me about your books and since I read your first book in the Climb series, I have been a fan of all of your books. The Bakeshop series is my favorite. I remember some authors do not like the term cozy and prefer "classic mystery" term to "cozy mystery".
Yes, sometimes we just need to put books that aren’t resonating aside into the DNF stack. People use the term classic or traditional to describe the genre, which works too but I’m all in for “cozy”. 😊
Loved this video and all your reasons to read cozies. I definitely agree that we all need an escape now and again and cozy mysteries are perfect for that!
So glad it resonated with you! Yes, the vast majority of my reading right now is to escape and I don’t feel even a tiny bit guilty about that. 😉 Self-care!
I think you covered everything 😊 I work in a library but obviously at the moment we're working from home trying to reach our readers through social media. I'm trying to get more people interested in cozies by talking about them in a lot of my posts. Hopefully I've made at least one person interested 🤞😆
That's wonderful! I know it's been a challenge for libraries during the closures and stay at home orders, so thank you very much for all your efforts to stay in touch with readers via social media. I think you'll be able to pull several over to the cozy side! 😉
Thanks for asking. Trying to stay cool for sure! 🥵 So many days over 100º F this year. I, for one, am sooooo looking forward to fall and those cool temps. 🍁

They are addictive! When you realize how many authors and series there are, you just can't stop. Thank you, Ellie. Great video.

You stating I need to escape and have a light, fun distraction from life resonates with me too! I Love cozies and especially yours 🌸
Yes! Escapes are essential right now. I'm so happy that you're finding enjoyment in cozies (mine and others). Happy reading! 😍

These are my favorite aspects of a cozy. Im trying to write one and get published like fellow local authors Mary Angela and Rosemarie Ross.
That’s great! Keep writing.
