And this is it! The final Bond video on my channel (not including Austin Powers). Here I rank every single Bond flick from most Bond to least Bond and I include my thoughts on the Daniel Craig era as well for anyone who would like to know my thoughts on those films. It has been an epic journey through each and every Bond film and I would really like to say thank you so much everyone for sticking around! I have enjoyed reading every single comment (even the bad ones!) and loved hearing your opinions on each film. If you disagree with my rankings, as I am sure you will, please let me know yours in the comments!
    Have a great day! :)

Great list! I'm a fan of all these movies, so it would be kinda difficult for me to rank them. So I can appreciate when somebody takes the time to rank them due to their personal opinions. Connery and Moore are both equal pinnacle Bonds to me, since I grew up watching their old movies as a pre-teen. OHMSS is great; you might re-evaluate that one one day, like a poster before me mentioned. But Dalton and his two movies are special favorites of mine. Even Christopher Nolan lists him as his favorite Bond actor. As a teen, I started getting heavily into the series after Licence to Kill was released. And whenever I see Brosnan and Craig's films, I can't help but compare them all to the legacy of Dalton's gritty, Fleming-inspired approach, even though they're both great actors, and their films (especially GoldenEye and Casino Royale) are entertaining in their own right.

Great and I agree with most of your rankings! Thanks so much for doing this and for all the videos. I enjoyed sharing this long journey with you. Am also glad to see so much love for Timothy Dalton's movies as he was one of my childhood Bonds along with Roger Moore and I also rate them highly! Well done on completing this series and giving us so much entertainment along the way!

How is YOLT racist ? Bond tries to disguise himself to blend into the community. Thats not racist. The definition of racist is: "prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalised." Bond is the minority fish out of water in this movie so he must change accordingly. Also, JW Pepper is deliberately created as a racist character to indicate the level of racism in the USA at that time by caricaturing the deep south racist stereotype. Instead of preaching about racism through virtue signalling and exposition, the filmmakers made Pepper a buffoon to show how stupid racism is. He's not just a fun character, who many enjoy, he is the convex mirror to mainstream racist tropes of the time and therefore an important part of the movie satire puzzle. PS in Dalton's name, the DA IS pronounced like DOOR - so it sounds like dawl-tonne.

Timothy Dalton's Bond had a unique emotional range. He's physical and violent, tense like piano wire. He's a real rebel, and can barely tolerate following orders from MI6. But he's also the most sentimental of the Bonds, and has the most genuine and kind smile.

    • @PungiFungi

Dalton's Bond is certainly a lot more complex than the others. He is everything Daniel Craig tried to be, actually.

Dalton's Bond is closest to the Bond of the books. License To Kill is my favourite and contains Flemings iconic "He disagreed with something that ate him"

    • @michaelhurley1497
      @michaelhurley1497 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. It is very fragmentary, especially in the second half, due to the use of multiple directors, and it has some issues related to the over-inflated egos of some of the cast, especially Peter Sellers, who walked out of the production which meant that the film had to be cut around his scenes. There are, however, some funny moments, excellent music and great art direction, especially the heavily stylised Berlin sequence. It also has a brilliant cast: David Niven, Woody Allen, Orson Welles, Deborah Kerr, Ursula Andress, et al.

Kind of "shocking" ;) to me about Live and Let Die! I personally think you are giving a little too much weight to the annoyance of the sheriff character haha. He fits in the story and world if you ask me. It's kind of a collage/pastiche of the American south and American culture of the time. There's so much to love about this movie, its impossible for me to care about any shortcomings it might have. The energy is infectious to me. For me its tied for the best with Casino Royale. :)
Also, just putting this out there: the Quantum of Solace stans confuse me. It's objectively a bad movie, haha.

On Hulu, I believe, there's a documentary called Becoming Bond which details the truly incredible story of how George Lazenby landed the role of Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (and why it was his only one.) Positively shocking, if it wasn't true you'd never believe it.

  • @kuribayashi84

Right now, my ranking would be:
First Quartile: Goldeneye, The Spy who loved me, Casino Royale, Skyfall, Goldfinger, Licence to Kill
Second Quartile: You only live twice, Tomorrow never dies, On her Majesties Secret Service, Moonraker, The Living Daylights, For your eyes only
Third Quartile: Octopussy, Live and let die, From Russia with love, The World is not enough, Thunderball, Dr. No
Fourth Quartile: A View to a Kill, The Man with the Golden Gun, Quantum of Solace, Diamonds are forever, Die another Day, Spectre
Dr.No serves as a Benchmark of sorts, with all movies below it (fourth Quartile) being below par (enjoyable, yes, but flawed)
I don't know where to rank No Time to die yet, but right now it'd be right in between second and third Quartile.

    My top 5 is:
1.- Casino Royale, simply the best James Bond movie.
2.- Goldfinger, one of the best and the most important James Bond film. It's influence during the 1960's was tremendous. And by the way, Sean Connery is my favorite James Bond.
3.- On the Majesty Secret Service. Telly Savalas was the best Blofeld for me and Tracy was one of the best Bond girls.
4.- GoldenEye. It had the best that you can wait in a Bond movie.
5.- The Spy who Loved Me. Everything work in this movie.

For Your Eyes Only has a smaller plot but it is a very Cold-War-plot. The race for tech that can disturb the balance in the Cold War is classic spy-thriller. When I think of For Your Eyes Only I immediately remember the attack on the Havelocks, the 2CV-chase (one of the best car-chases in Bond-movies and Bond is not even driving), the Bond-girl, Topol, the complete ski chase, the twist, Bond killing Locque, the climb to the monastery. Yes, the movie is a bit too long, some action-scenes could have been cut (the scenes on the icehockeyring and the attack with the cycles in the village seemed so 'oops, we have gone through 10 minutes without an action-scene'), the way Kristatos wanted to execute Melina and Bond after catching them was so stupid (after seeing the scene in Austin Powers where Dr Evil refuses to just shoot Austin Powers I always laugh when I get to that scene in FYEO). FYEO is certainly not the best Bond but after the ridiculous Moonraker is was a great retuning of Bond and I am a bit surprised that you say you do not really remember anything about this movie while it has so many classic scenes and actually one of the better more grounded plots of all Bond-movies. In Octopussy they quickly started going the other way again, though that movie certainly tried to keep the plot a bit more grounded and serious than most Bond-movies. I like my Bond-movies to at least feel a bit realistic, that is why I love Goldfinger, From Russia with Love, Goldeneye, Casino Royale, For Your Eyes Only and I would really like to add Living Daylights and License to Kill, but I did not like Dalton in Living Daylights because he did not seem to know what to do with the role yet, and Licence to Kill did not feel like a Bond-movie, Dalton is better here but when watching LTK I always imagine seeing Schwartzenegger playing Dalton's part and thinking it would be an even better movie. Casino Royale is the only Craig-Bond I like because of the more grounded plot, but I do not like the ending, they should have opted here for the OHMSS-ending. The other Craig-Bonds always miss the mark, I thought the idea of an overarching storyline was stupid. I never understood why Skyfall got to be so popular, yes, Javier Bardem is great but Javier Bardem did this in No Country for Old Men and we know he does this very well, but the rest of the movie is so meh, they seemed to want to return to the classic Bond-formula but not really, something that troubled Spectre even more. I do not like Quantum but at least Quantum tried to keep up with the tone that was set in Casino Royale, something Craig obviously found very important since he helped write Quantum when the writers began their strike, and something that probably made him hate the part when the writers started to deviate from that tone in Skyfall and certainly in Spectre. I like the way you presented the list, I always found that a better way than just going through a list from 25 to 1 because there is a bit more tension.

I believe that you should rewatch the Connery movies. Also i would especially recommend you to rewatch Thunderball. It is very underrated on your list. You will see that in Thunderball Connery is giving his best performance as James Bond and the best overall Bond performance on the franchise. For me Thunderball, Goldfinger and From Russia with Love are the top three classic Bond films of all time.

This is my personal opinion, but I did watch Skyfall in theaters and I never understood why people were giving it so much love. First of all, I thought its theme about whether digital intelligence gathering by MI6 was justified was executed really badly, especially months after US and NATO intelligence gathering was under its worst scrutiny--re the Wikileaks disclosures surrounding US metadata gathering. (To be continued, SPOILERS BELOW)
The twist that the enemy was one of M's field agents, a problem the agency created, completely undermines her argument: the security problems MI6 faced were only ever the ones it created. And the climax is that Bond stops Silva from committing a murder-suicide, only for M to die immediately afterward. It left me asking, "Why should I care about the last 2 hours I just watched anymore?" It was like a comedy, but it wasn't funny.
And all those callbacks to the earlier franchise just struck me as empty. They're just reminders of better movies than the one I'm watching, and temptation to watch the next one. Well, why should I? When the last two Bond films were promised to be so great but winded up such huge disappointments? I do not exaggerate when I say Skyfall killed the James Bond franchise for me. I've not watched another one in theaters, and I've only watched Spectre with friends on home video. I didn't want to watch it, and afterward I wanted to not watch it. Even the action sequences were dull, unrealistic, more funny than thrilling. Damn you Skyfall!

There's a few variations but my list would be very similar, especially Dalton's 2 epics!
Here's a few ideas for you or anyone else wanting to see the Bonds or other Co Stars in non Bond films. Eg you should totally do Dracula and the Frankenstein films with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Continuity is often Planet of the Apes sequel off but they're all great horror fun, they'd take some time to get through them :D
Other suggestions are like 'The Man who haunted himself' Roger Moore's favourite role, a couple of years before he was Bond, there's a James Bond reference in it too :D
Highlander's a great Sean Connery film, made around the same time as Never, he beame great friends with Christopher Lambert during the shoot, classic film.... Starting to think you've watched it already, I might be thinking of Shan... Anyway.
Flash Gordon and Hot Fuzz are awesome Timothy Dalton films :D
Pierce Brosnan was in The Lawnmower Man, I personally like it but it's fifty fifty with most, you either really like it or don't like it much.
Oh and for Bond like vibes, the Ipcress File and it's sequels are made by the same people and Austin Powers seems to have aimed more at looking like Michael Caine, especially in Billion Dollar Brain.

I'm happy that No Time To Die was Daniel Craig's last movie as James Bond (it was a better & more entertaining 007 entry than 'Spectre').
Even if Safin wasn't a great villain, there were other things that I like very much:
    * The scene with the Aston Martin DB5.
    * The locations in Matera, Jamaica, Norway & Faroe Islands.
    * Madeleine finally having a bit of personality as a character.
    * Bond having leisure time in Italy & Jamaica.
    * The scenes with Felix Leiter.
    * Daniel Craig's performance.
    * Bond accompanied by another 00 agent for much of the movie, including the climax.
    * Blofeld executing his plan to kill James Bond from his cell
    * Q's character (my favorite version of the character along with Desmond Llewelyn's)
    * Bond pleasing a child and having other unimaginable challenges (physically and emotionally)
    * See MI6 having a change of 'status quo'
Which moments do you like in No Time To Die?

  • @markjone671

My own ranking of the Bond movies would be using your system if I may.
Bond, James Bond: On Her Majesty's Secret Service / The Spy Who Loved Me / For Your Eyes Only / Thunderball / The Living
Daylights / Licence to Kill / Goldeneye / Casino Royale / Skyfall / Live an Let Die / You Only Live Twice
Shaken Not Stirred: Goldfinger / From Russia With Love / The World is Not Enough
Gooooooood: Dr No / Quantum of Solace / Tomorrow Never Dies
Shocking, Positively Shocking: Moonraker / The Man With the Golden Gun / Never Say Never Again
Live and Let Die: Die Another Day / Diamonds Are Forever / A View To a Kill / No Time to Die / SPECTRE
I've really, really enjoyed your journey through classic Bond but I would like to address one final thing about the perception of You Only Live Twice being racist. I have actually lived in Japan . I lived in Chiba Prefecture, outside of Tokyo. A largely rural area. I taught English at a language school in nearby Noda city. James Bond has always been hugely popular in Japan and You Only Live Twice is one of the most popular Bond movies over there. The Japanese actually find Sean Connery's unconvincing transformation into a Japanese fisherman hilariously funny and do not find it racist or are offended by it at all.

Great list! Agree on a lot of things. The thing with the Bond-films is that there are few that are terrible. I mean, even though Diamonds are forever is among the worst, it is entertaining, in my opinion. If you compare to other movie series where mostly the first 2 movies are good and after that they become absolute shite, the Bond-movies do have a very high lowest point.

Great listing. Unsurprisingly, given personal tastes, I don’t agree with quite a lot of it: for me SEAN CONNERY had the best mix of edge, playful humour and charisma as Bond and my top five are 1. GOLDFINGER 2. FRWL 3. DR. NO 4. CASINO ROYALE (2006) and 5. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. However, your passion and enthusiasm for movies of all kinds and from all eras (even finding positive things to say about DIE ANOTHER DAY!) make your reactions a lot of fun to watch, and this is a very enjoyable Bond overview.

Ok now. There is no way, ........no way........that Never Say Never should be in front of For Your Eyes Only. And also Die Another Day? Oh my land!! LoL. One thing became evident with this Bond journey. Those of us that grew up with Bond, actually lived through and watched the movies as they came out through the years..vs..those that watch them all later and caught up quickly, there is a difference of opinion. I think we had more time to let certain ones sink in and let appreciation grow, marinate if you will. They all had different impacts on us because they came to us at different points of our lives, and as our tastes evolved. One thing for sure....after another 20 years, your lists order will change! Guaranteed! It does for all of us.

Time enjoyably spent. You got "From Russia" up there at the top, so we're cool. 😉 The only serious disagreement I have is you putting "Octopussy" so high. For my generation (X), Moore was our Bond, and to see him as a CLOWN was simply unforgivable. (My 1st Bond: "Moonraker") But your praise of the film is making me consider watching Octo again, 40 years later. And yeah, don't be surprised if OHMSS slowly moves up your rankings as the years go on. So many fresh takes on the character and his world. Anyway, great job!

I was a kid when these movies started, so this is as much a generational difference as anything, but I will just speak of the two early Bonds in the movies. Sean - #1 is Goldfinger. You are correct, it introduces the Bond world but without (and this is important I think) a villain who is trying to take over the world … he is essentially just a thief. Has the best henchman (I like him better than Jaws, the hat alone makes him), has the best car, and has the best Bond girl name. And wow, for me the worst of all the pre-1980 Bond movies without a doubt is From Russia with Love. How they managed to make a Bond movie dull and boring is beyond me. I even thought the train scene was a yawner. If you can’t tell, I really hate this movie. It is literally the only Bond movie that I will not watch again. Lol. Best Roger - Man with the Golden Gun. This was the first time it was “personal” for Bond and the villain is great. Also, Live and Let Die is a fantastic movie. Give it another chance.

  • @007johnsnake
    @007johnsnake 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I also think that even the worst 007 movie is still an average/aceptable movie in general... or better than many feature films of a similar caliber.
Something that I find fascinating in the 007 film franchise is that it has quality standards or minimum requirements to give us an entertaining product that, in the best of cases, can become a classic of cinema... or, in the worst case scenario, ends up as just another object on its assembly line (but it never becomes one of the worst films of all time).
I mean, I'd give my least favorite 007 movie a zero if I compare it to the other 25 films, but if I weigh it against the entire spectrum of world cinema, I'd probably give it a 5 or 6. Also, my favorite Bond movie (which has a 10 out of 10 compared to the other 25 installments) would actually have an 8 or 9 if compared to much more iconic films in history.
At the end of the day, I think that the fact that these films are part of a 60-year-old cinematographic tradition and have followers who have maintained it as a cult phenomenon (praising its virtues more than its flaws), makes it easier to appreciate one of its movies, even if it's the most generic Bond movie or doesn't fill the shoes of other film franchises.
If I've never fallen asleep watching a 007 movie (or stopped it long before its climax) or if it makes me want to give it another shot with a fellow Bond fan present... it must mean something, right?

  • @Vanska0
    @Vanska0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I really like your list~! I think mine would be similiar and i'm so happy the love you give for "The Living Daylights" (and Timontyh Dalton in general, he's my favorite bond!) as i feel it's probably the most underrated of James Bond films to this day that i find myself watching it the most from time and time again, same with "octopussy" ! I also totally get what you're saying about "Die another day" as i recently rewatched it after so long, it's one of those movies that are so bad they're kind of good in their badness, or atleast entertaining! Unlike "Diamonds are forever" which i deff agree with being the bottom one. I hated "Diamonds", it's cheap, ugly and aggravating in how it tries to be "Look at how we're poking fun at ourselves" in the most cynical levels. Not to mention, disappointing followup for "Majesty's".
If there's anything i'd change from the list, i'd probably knock "Thunderball" and "Never say never again" into Live and Let Die -category, as i find one an expensive bore of an action movie, and latter missed opportunity and also boring. Maybe that movie's plot just doesn't work for me.

I definitely rate _Live and Let Die_ higher. While _No Time to Die_ made it fun to try spotting all the allusions to the previous movies, it was otherwise shockingly mediocre in plot and writing; I was astonished at how good the reviews were, but that might be because most of the reviewers were young and had their taste shaped by the Craig films. It will be interesting to see how the producers choose to reboot after killing Bond; they've always maintained that Bond is *not* a codename. There could be a successor Agent 007, but not another James Bond.

@RolyPolyOllie Reactions - How is YOLT racist ?
