I began Hadot's "What is Ancient Philosophy?" today. Luke Timothy Johnson's lectures on Ancient Moralists got me to thinking about 'philosophy as a way of life.' So much to learn; so much to live!

You're so right - we love Hadot's position that philosophy was for living. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for this. I must read this "Philosophy asa a way of life" for a course I am enrolled in. To me, Hadot seems to say "get real" to us and that is the message going back 2500 years. So I say to myself, "get real, wise up, This is about transforming, working and evolving".

Well said! It's not an easy book, but well worth reading. Hadot seems to understand the ancient philosophers in a rather unique way. Thanks for watching!

I have long admired Hadot's work. Thanks for this lucid introduction to his thought, which only serves to show how cerebral and irrelevant much of contemporary philosophy is.

Thanks for this great comment. Yes, philosophy in the ancient world was a much broader subject which included what is now some psychology and natural science, as well as the 'spiritual exercises' as Hadot calls them, in the pursuit of wisdom.

Marx is the only great thinker worth studying.
