I love that you point out the similarities found in the stoic philosophy & Viktor Frankl’s findings. I read Man’s search for meaning not long ago and then returned to Meditations immediately after and I was really taken back by how similar the bottom lines were. Some of the best quotable content from each book is so similar it’s chilling given the fact that their circumstances were so incredibly different. Great content here!
This is awesome. I have had the concepts of Mindfulness, Buddhist Non-attachment, and the space between Stimulus and Response as balls juggling in my head for years. It is through this series (especially this one) that I have a framework to organise these thoughts. Thank you Brian from the bottom of my heart.
I just discovered your channel and wow! I am very impressed, I just finished this book and you summed it up very well. Thank you so much! Keep it up! :)
Hey Brian I bought a subscription to your optimize app a few weeks ago. It is just amazing. The quality of the app and the content is a life changer. Thank you for your work !!
Hi Mike, This is Evan! Thrilled to hear you love the app + the membership. You rock. Thank you for your kind words + incredible support! We're honored to have you and look forward to sharing an amazing 2018 together. Let's do this!! - Evan + Team Optimize
This is awesome. I haven't read much about stoics. The only piece I've read from Marcus Aurelius is one about memorization, when I was reading about the memory palace technique.
Hey Brian, was wondering if you had done a Philosopher's Note on "Discipline Equals Freedom: Feild Manual" or "Extreme Ownership" by Jocko Willink? If not I'd love to hear your thoughts on either/both.
You read a 200 page book in a morning? You serious? That's incredible, how do you fit in note making. It takes me a week to finish the average 200 page book
Francis!! Yes, sir. I can read a "normal" 200-250 page self-help book by lunch time. I do get up at 3 or 4 AM tho and I am paid to read books so... Hah! In a going-gonzo day, I can read the book in the morning then have lunch, take a little nap and crank out the PDF in the afternoon. Let's do this!
Brian Johnson incredible! Ok I don't quite need to get through a book that quick like you do, but I'm going to optimize my reading now. Too many great ideas out there. Thanks Brian. Let's do it!
I need to do a class on Reading 101. #1 thing is commitment to high standards of reading x books per year/month, etc. Then creating focused Deep Work time bubbles is huge. And, it's funny b/c when I let too much tech (phone/internet) into my life I literally can't settle my brain down in the same way and it's hard to read a book. But when I'm fresh and rested (another Idea for the class :), I can cut right through a book. Altho... (I'm rambling now--lol), I never rush reading a book or try to speed read. I approach like an intimate conversation with a genius who spent a big part of their life crafting each sentence! Let's do it for sure!! :)
Brian Johnson Yes! A Reading 101 is exactly what I'd love to see. I welcome that whenever you get round to it. Totally agree about not rushing a book or speed reading. All these fancy guys on TH-cam on how to read a book a day, by not actually reading it, lol. I like this intimate conversation mindset. Reading first thing before Internet distraction is dynamite too. I find I can read for straight hour using a pomodoro timer app for 15 minutes on, 2 minutes off for quick power pose and stretch and then back on for 15 minutes. This really keeps me focused and avoid physical and mental fatigue when I read. Keep up the good work Brian and have a happy new year to you and your family! Here's to a fully 'booked' 2018!
Aurelius's notes isn't a hard book. Hadot is also very readable. Both books are worth reading; the former more so than the latter. You don't need an intermediary "helping" you, this is not nuclear physics --- especially a glib bullshitter trying to make a buck on TH-cam.
Impossible to review this book in 15. A phenomenal read for those studying stoicism.
Post grad University textbook level difficulty.
Hi Markus, could you please recommend one of Pierre's books to start from?

Is there any way to buy individual Philosopher's Notes?

You can read much faster than that you just choose not to.
Great channel. Well done.
Nice video, thanks. Can't say I approve of placing Eckhart Bloomin Tolle and Byron Katie in the same sentence as Marcus Aurelius though :)
Thank you! Haha, we're all one big Optimizing family. 💙

Hi I was wondering if you could kindly recommended one of the book that could be applied in everyday life?
